8 IEEE 802.3af Main Objectives Power Transmit power only for authenticated compatible terminals (e.g.: IP Phones or WLAN Access Points, Security Cameras, etc.) Safe solution Automatically blocks power to legacy Ethernet devices (e.g.: Laptops, NICs, switches, etc.) System Protection Protect systems against overloads and short-circuits Compatibility - Compatible with standard Category 5 (and above) cabling infrastructure, no need to replace cables, patch-panels, RJ-45 outlets, etc. 2006/5/26 Page 8

12 PoE Process Det. Class. Startup Operation (PM / RTP) Disc. PD Detection is performed to decide whether the terminal is PoE enabled. PD Classification determines PD s consumed power prior to its powering. Startup Process is done gradually to avoid data interference. 16 Classification Function PSE stabilizes a 20V signal, for 30ms, over the port output, and measures the consumed current. Example: a PD with a maximal power consumption of 7 W should be classified as class 2. Under 18V it should consume 17 to 20 ma to indicate this class.
