1 Fact Sheet Smart Gateway 8275 SOHO/ROBO Reference Design Today s customer premises equipment (CPE) market is evolving to meet the high-speed broadband, voice and wireless access needs of small-office/home-office (SOHO), remoteoffice/branch-office (ROBO) and small-to-medium enterprise (SME) environments. Gateway and router equipment manufacturers are creating new generations of CPE products that integrate a wide range of communications and networking technologies, from Fast Ethernet and xdsl interfaces to voice over IP (VoIP) and wireless LAN (WLAN) to virtual private network (VPN) based security. Because of the increasing complexity and functionality of nextgeneration gateway and router designs, CPE vendors manufacturers are requiring their silicon suppliers to deliver flexible, comprehensive platform solutions that help reduce development costs and speed time to market. Freescales solution is the Smart Gateway 8275 SOHO/ROBO Reference Design. Based on Freescale PowerQUICC II communications processor architecture, this reference design gives system developers the flexibility to design a wide range of gateway and router products for the high-end SOHO, ROBO and low-end SME markets. Freescale s comprehensive Smart Gateway 8275 Reference Design includes: A comprehensive reference design based on the high-performance MPC8275VR PowerQUICC II processor and the MPC185 security processor Linux OS-based board support package is available on request Documentation, schematics and bill of materials (BOM). 2 Reference Design Block Diagram Figure 1.0 MPC8275 Gateway Block Diagram As can be seen from the block diagram (in Figure 1.0) the Smart Gateway 8275 reference design comprises of a basic board, (mother board), and external expansion cards (daughter cards). Freescale has designed the platform in this plug and play approach to allow the user maximum flexibility in the supported feature set and functions of the end system. Users should note that external 3rd parties of Freescale provide the functionality of the ADSL and VDSL expansion cards. Appropriate 3 rd party NDA (Non Disclosure Agreements) must be signed before any technical schematics or product specifications can be released to any interested users.

The diagram in Figure 2.0 shows a photograph of the MPC8275VR motherboard populated with a number of the aforementioned daughter cards.
