Explain in detail how a switch differs from a hub in terms of the way it forwards traffic towards its destination. 2b. Explain how a network administrator can choose between performance and reliability when choosing how a switch forwards traffic. 2c. Describe the different negotiated interface modes a switchport can be configured to use with the help of Dynamic Trunking Protocol. (5 marks) 2d. Describe how the Switch Spoofing Attack potentially allows an attacker to avoid VLAN security settings. How can this attack be prevented? (8 marks) PLEASE TURN THE PAGE.
QUESTION 3 Page 3 of 8 3a. Explain how the RIP and OSPF protocols calculate their metrics for remote networks. 3b. The OSPF protocol can use a Designated Router explain the purpose of this device and how the device is selected. (9 marks) 3c. Refer to the diagram below: In this network, PC 0 is unable to connect to PC 1. Explain the steps you would take to try to debug the network and repair the problem preventing the PCs communicating. Where appropriate state the Cisco IOS commands you would use to discover information. (10 marks) PLEASE TURN THE PAGE.
Page 4 of 8 QUESTION 4 4a. With reference to the diagram below, why do Cisco routers use the concept of administrative distance? (4 marks) 4b. What methods exist to conserve the limited availability of publically routable IPv4 addresses? (4 marks) 4c. Describe the process by which a client can request a DHCP lease from a server. (4 marks) 4d. Use Variable Length subnet masks to split up the /24 network to provide addresses for all the sub-networks shown below. For each network state the network address, subnet mask and the range of available addresses. (13 marks) PLEASE TURN THE PAGE.

Page 6 of 8 QUESTION 5 5a. How are subnets and VLANS related and how do they differ? Use the following diagram for question 5b and 5c. (5 marks) PC0 is on Vlan 10 (Management) /27 PC1 is on Vlan 15 (Sales) /27 5b. Write the Cisco IOS commands needed to configure the switch interfaces and VLAN settings for S1. You should include the correct prompt for each command but you do not need to perform other setup tasks such as passwords. (10 marks) 5c. Write the Cisco IOS commands needed to configure the router interfaces for the network shown above. As before you need to configure the interfaces and routing behaviour only. (10 marks) PLEASE TURN THE PAGE.
Page 7 of 8 QUESTION 6 6a. What is the purpose of a DMZ subnet on a network? Why might a DMZ be necessary? (4 marks) 6b. What are the guidelines for the placement of standard and extended Access Control Lists. Why is it recommended that they are placed on different interfaces? 6c. Refer to the network diagram below: Determine a series of Access Control List rules for Router 0 to protect this network. You must accommodate the following: Hosts on the LAN may access web servers (port 80 and 443) on the Internet Hosts on the LAN can access hosts in the DMZ using SSH (port 22) Devices on the Internet may access the servers in the DMZ only using their standard ports (Web 80 and 443, DNS 53, SMTP 25) All other access from the Internet must be blocked. You should specify which router interface and in which direction each of your ACL rules are applied. (15 marks)
