Residential Internet Usage Future Data Growth Rate: 50%? 20% Source: ADTRAN estimates, Busy Hour Load derived from published US Internet traffic statistics 2015 ADTRAN GmbH. All rights reserved. 6
Consumption and Broadband Speeds Source: Ofcom analysis of operator data Clear correlation between broadband speed and data use up to 10 Mbit/s. This suggest that below 10 Mbit/s there is a degree of constrained demand. The majority of superfast broadband users appear to be using on average around 100GB per month. Virgin Media users can be identified at the drops in average data use at its various points of package entry, i.e. at 20, 30, 50 and 60 Mbit/s ADTRAN GmbH. All rights reserved. 7
Node to Node Variations Source: Sandvine The location of a matters (university campus vs. retirement home) 1.0% of subscribers who make the heaviest use of the network s upstream resources account for 42.0% of total upstream and 14.7% of downstream traffic. Lightest 60.0% of users account for only 10.0% of total traffic ADTRAN GmbH. All rights reserved. 8
Required Backhaul Capacity (1/2) Monte Carlo simulations of HSIA and IPTV HSIA - BHOL is modeled as a bounded Pareto distribution - Target downstream performance is 500 Mbit/s which should be achieved in 95% of time - Effective BHOL of a node is scaled to reflect node to node variations (90 th percentile) IPTV - IPTV scenario 2 STBs (4k 19 Mbit/s, HD 7.7 Mbit/s), on average 1.35 STBs are active - Simulation of linear TV, interactive TV, and VOD with a certain probability - Consideration of Multicast, Unicast, Fast CC, mass CC event, etc th percentile of max IPTV traffic is used 2015 ADTRAN GmbH. All rights reserved. 9
Required Backhaul Capacity (2/2) 1800 Required backhaul capacity for a 500 Mbit/s service 1600 backhaul capacity [Mbit/s] HSIA 8 Mbit/s BHOL HSIA 5 Mbit/s BHOL HSIA 1 Mbit/s BHOL IPTV 1 Mbit/s + IPTV number of subscribers 2015 ADTRAN GmbH. All rights reserved. 10

Conclusions Fiber laying is still the biggest CAPEX portion in G.fast deployments Copper based backhauling can reduce costs, time to market/cash and provides deployment schedule predictability Required backhauling capacities are moderate for small nodes In many scenarios FTTdp bitrates can also be obtained via copper based backhauling: - Vectored VDSL2 bonding for long distances - G.fast bonding for high bitrates on short loops Bonding technologies and latency implications need to be studied further 2015 ADTRAN GmbH.
