2 COURSE DESCRIPTION: A Wireless network is an extension of a wired network, therefore exposure to wired networks are essential. This course builds on the Computer Networking course ETEC126 and enhances, students capability to comprehend client-server network environments. It teaches the common communication protocols with an emphasis on TCP/IP. Students build a domain-based network which is used for wireless networking. This course introduces students to Wireless Networks comprised of Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN), Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), and Wireless Wide Area Networks (WWAN). The course contents include physical layer standards, medium access control, building and securing WLANs. Wide Area Networks including cellular data networks Implementation of Wireless Access Protocols to WAP-enabled devices will be discussed and a brief introduction to WiMAX and its applications will be provided. Theory classes will be supplemented with labs to enhance practical knowledge in integrating, testing, commissioning, and network management of wireless networks. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion, students will be able to: 1. Explain basic wired network concepts, including network terms, types of network and interface cards 2. Explain the communication protocols used in network operating systems 3. Install a domain controller, configure networking services and active directory 4. Install a client and configure it to be part of domain 5. Assess different technologies and topologies used in wireless networks 6. Understand IEEE wireless standards 7. Combine WPAN and data services in wireless networks 8. Design, plan, configure, and manage wireless access points, adapters, bridges, and antennas 9. Assess and configure security options for wireless networks 10. Prepare site survey(s) for optimum coverage 11. Integrate wireless internet and WAP 12. Understand cellular, broadband wireless networks ( WiMAX, GSM, GPRS, and IS-95) ESSENTIAL EMPLOYABILITY SKILLS (EES): This course supports the students ability to: Communicate clearly, concisely and correctly in the written, spoken and visual form that fulfills the purpose and meets the needs of audiences. Use a variety of computer hardware and software, and other technological tools appropriate and necessary to the performance of tasks. Interact with others in groups or teams in ways that contribute to effective working relationships and the achievement of goals. Evaluate her or his own thinking throughout the steps and processes used in problem solving and decisionmaking. Analyze, evaluate, and apply relevant information from a variety of sources. Caveat The College will use reasonable effort to deliver the course details as described in the following table. However, the timing of the delivery can vary from week to week. For example, some topics could be combined into one week or a single topic could be expanded over several weeks. In addition, external factors such as weather and power failure can also influence the timing and availability of the content. Students are encouraged to read the course materials prior to attending classes in order to enhance their overall learning experience. 4 POLICY STATEMENTS College Policies The following statements are selected from Centennial College policies approved by the Board of Governors. Student Responsibilities Students are expected to know the contents of the course outline and to discuss with the professor any areas where clarification is required. Students should keep all course outlines for each course taken at Centennial College. These may be used to apply for transfer of credit to other educational institutions. A fee may be charged for additional or replacement copies. Other Policies Students should familiarize themselves with all College Policies that cover students rights, responsibilities, and the Academic Appeal process. For further information, consult the Academic Matters Section in the full-time and Continuing Education calendars. The Academic Appeal Application form is available from any Enrolment Services Office. Proof of Student Status Students must produce official photo identification at any time during the semester when requested to do so by any professor. (The official piece is the Centennial Student Card.) Continuing Education students do not have Centennial Student Cards, and so they may use other forms of photo identification, such as a driver s license, health card, or other government-issued photo identification. Final Examinations When writing a test or examination, students must put their official photo-id cards in full view for review by the invigilator. Students who do not have official photo-id will be permitted to write the examination with a substitute photo-id, but they will be required to produce photo-id at the program or department office within 24 hours or the next business day following the examination, or else the examination results will be void.
