3 General All DVI receivers are basically installed in an equal fashion; the receiver is connected to the LCD panel via a panel adapter, and finally attached to the PC/host with a standard DVI cable. The receivers require a separate DC power supply and will directly connect to a TDK inverter unit for the LCD CCFT back-light, forming the major part of a LCD monitor with DVI connection. Each receiver includes a factory set-up which will allow for Plug&Play installation without additional support. This set-up includes the necessary EDID data for the host power-on procedure, but also receiver specific onboard settings. This means, a LCD panel with inverter, attached to the relevant DVI receiver, will give the best digital image without any additional adjustments. The major difference between the receivers is the way they simulate a CRT. The DVI-3001/2/3 will only accept a single specific video format/structure, while the DVI-3004/XR will act as a true multi-sync monitor. The latter allows for better use of LCD active image area when the PC/host software includes non-scalable applications. The DVI receiver automatically initiates this function. It is advisable to take special care during initial set-up of a new DVI host, especially if the graphics card/attach is changed in the process. Should problems occur, for example there is no picture on the LCD panel after power-on, it may be necessary to connect a CRT to be able to follow the fault process as the default output of any host is the analogue CRT. The below sections should give you adequate support. 1.1 Installation The DVI-3001/2/3/4/XR is attached to the relevant Sharp LCD panel, as below. Note should be taken to the flex cable connection not to damage, or dislocate the dark lip of PL5 and PL2 if fitted. To connect the flex cable, lift the dark plastic lip on connector PL5/2, insert the flex cable square into the connector and close the lip. If the cable is square and pushed as far as possible into the connector no excessive force is required to close the lip with a gentile snap. Direct to closing force not only down towards the pcb but also towards the hinged end of the lip, to avoid the lip being pushed out of its hinge position. Please make sure the blue protective film of the flex cable is visible, i.e. the flex-cable connections are towards the PCB. Repeat the procedure for the adapter PCB to be used at the other end of the flex cable and attach the adapter to the LCD panel. Before power-up, set the relevant LCD ID via hex-switch PL9. Please contact your Sharp representative for further details. In a similar way, DVI-3003R can also be used for other LVDS panels, like XGA/SXGA. Should the DVI receiver work with a Sharp graphics card, power sequence must be DVI-receiver before, or at the same time as the PC, plus solder pad JP3 should be bridged (if available), to allow for proper set-up of BIOS data. When used with a DVI PC/host, power-on timing to the receiver is independent of this DVI PC/host and JP3 should not be bridged. 1.2 Power connection The DVI receivers are designed to work with remote power or from the host computer internal power. Connection is made via a 3 pin JST cable assembly between PL1 and the PC 5V (red wire), 12V (yellow wire) and GND (black wire) or to an external power supply. 4 Pin No. Signal Description 1 GND (black) 2 Vdd 12VDC supply (yellow) 3 Vcc 5VDC supply (red) Note: Pin1 is marked on the PCB connector (small indent in housing) If using an external power supply it should be capable of delivering 1A at 5V and 1A at 12V(incl. back-light inverter). If the display being driven is the 18.1 SXGA then you will need a capacity of 3A at 12V (incl. backlight inverter). 1.3 Installation for EMI compliance Care has to be taken on installing the receiver module into your system to ensure correct grounding to avoid the DVI-3001/2/3/4/XR acting as an aerial for the high frequency signals passing through it. It is important that the DVI connector casing, PL4 on the receiver, has a good connection to chassis ground. The signal ground of the receiver should also be connected to the chassis ground to avoid a floating ground. The four mounting holes are connected to signal ground and are recommended to be connected/fixed with appropriate stand-offs/screws to give proper ground connection and clearance. This grounding should be carried out regardless of where the power for the module is being derived from. Furthermore, to avoid any possible high-voltage damage when using an external PSU, proper earth connection should be cared for. Especially during hot-plugging when the DVI cable is just about to be connected/reconnected, an insufficient grounding to earth could cause IC damage. Thus, it is advisable to keep the DVI cable connected both ends during power if in doubt. 1.4 Inverter connection An TDK inverter can be connected directly to PL3. When using TDK CXA-0217 inverter a 50K potentiometer is most suitable. For CXA-0231 a 10K is better. 1.5 Short-form installation guide The following is to give a quick reference to installation: Select panel to be driven via PL9 on DVI-3001/2/3/4/XR receiver (note below 1.6 for DVI-3004R) Connect the TDK inverter to PL3 Connect flat flex cable between receiver and LCD adapter or LVDS cable in case of DVI-3003R Connect DVI cable between host/pc and receiver Connect power to the receiver with 3pin cable to PL1 Power-on PC If no function connect a CRT to host output to check status (most likely graphics drivers must be reinstalled or old non-dvi drivers de-installed to allow for DVI output) If still no function with new DVI drivers, then RTFS DVI-3001/2/3/4/XR If picture, install suitable graphics drivers if required 1.6 Panel selection/receiver programming for DVI-3004R only The DVI-3004R receiver has to be programmed prior to first use. Please follow the below procedure: 1. Set PL to position A 2. Connect power to PL1 taking care of polarity 3. Receiver will indicate RED for 3seconds DVI_an.doc/

5 4. Receiver will indicate RED+GREEN for another 3 seconds 5. During the previous 3+3seconds, set PL9 to the panel to be driven (see 2.3) 6. When receiver is indicating ONLY red after 4., disconnect power 7. The receiver is now programmed for the panel selected with PL9 Note: should a PL9 setting be wrongly selected by mistake, no new data will be programmed and the sequence 1-6 should be repeated. 9 1.9 Software Installation General Installation Notes We recommend to install the DVI-300XX from scratch, means setup a new Windows OS before you start setup of an DVI solution If this is not possible we suggest to de-install all current Graphics Hardware and the correspondent Software for it. Please refer De-installation guide of your current Graphics Adapter. Also you may find some helpful hints from our example Howto At least you have install first a Standard PCI VGA Graphic Card, before you start to setup an AGP DVI Video Card. Please refer also Graphics Adapter ReadMe files and follow the Card Manufactor Installation Guide to setup the Card correctly. Installation Notes for running System Deinstall first the current Display Driver Software Remove the installed Monitor from Device Manager Delete the installed Graphic Adapter from Device Manager and shutdown the PC. Install new AGP DVI Graphic Adapter and connect it to the DVI300XX. Startup the PC and install the New Found Hardware (PNP-Monitor DVIXXXX). Install the Windows supplied Driver for PNP Monitor Also you have to install a Standard PCI (VGA Card) DVI_an.doc/

10 Install the Driver Software for the Standard PCI-Graphic Card Click ADVANCED DVI_an.doc/

11 Click Change Click next and select DISPLAY ALL HARDWARE Select Standard Display Types and choose Standard PCI (VGA TYPE) and click next DVI_an.doc/

12 Click next and finish Installation and reboot the PC. Installation of Card Driver Now you have install the AGP Graphic Card Driver. Please refer to the supplied Software Installation Manual and install it as described in there. Below you will find an example how to setup a Hercules Card.
