3 Introduction Thank you for purchasing an environmental monitoring system from NexSens Technology. Refer to this guide for instructions on setting up state-of-the-art sensors, data loggers and software used on your system. This owner s manual provides valuable information specific to your system s startup, operation and maintenance. It contains a clickable Table of Contents and links to the NexSens Knowledge Base for your convenience. Make sure to read this guide thoroughly before using your system and keep it for future reference. At the end of this guide, you will find useful information on your NexSens warranty as well as safety guidelines you should follow when using your system. 4 Getting Started You ve just received your NexSens system, now what do you do to get it up and running? This section will guide you from the unpacking process through system testing and up to your final deployment. Step 1: Unpack Equipment The first important task to perform when a NexSens system is received is to unpack the equipment and confirm that all items were included with the shipment. NexSens systems are shipped in boxes and/or on pallets. Boxes are labeled with the part numbers and quantities of the products they contain. Verify that these labels match up with the items and quantities on the Order Confirmation. A copy of the Order Confirmation is contained in the Important Documents section for review. Step 2: Install ichart Software ichart Software is the Windows-based program used to configure systems, gather and manage data, and setup alarms and alerts. To begin with ichart software, install the application from the provided CD- ROM or from the NexSens website: The recommended location to save the application is in the C:\Program Files folder on the PC hard drive. If the PC has a Windows 7 or Vista Operating System, the correct Administrator settings and privileges must be enabled for the software to function properly from this location: It will be necessary to register the ichart software after installation. 5 Step 3: Place ichart Project File The NexSens Customer Support team has created an ichart project (.icr) file for your convenience. This file should be placed in the correct location on your PC hard drive. The following article provides instructions on this: Alternatively, the Setup Device Wizard can be used to create a project file. Refer to the ichart manual in the Important Documents section for more thorough instruction. Below are some quick guidelines: 1. In ichart, click File New Project. You will be prompted to create a name for the new project. 2. The Setup Device Wizard will appear. Click Next to proceed to Step Enter a Site Name and click Add. 4. In Step 2, select your data logger from the drop-down menu on the right. Add it to the site. 5. Step 3 requires that you select the data logger in the selection tree. Then add sensors to the data logger. 6. Input/Output are for advanced applications. Enter any necessary info in Step 4 and proceed to Step Enter the log and sample intervals for your project in Step 5. The sample interval controls how often a sample is taken. Log interval controls how often data is pulled into the ichart file. 8. Step 6 allows for programming the data logger with your settings. Click Program isic first, then Finish. Step 4: Test Cellular Communication in ichart Power your SDL500C using the D-Cell alkaline batteries included in the SDL500 Maintenance Kit. It will take about 2 minutes for the cellular modem to connect to the network once power is applied. Open your ichart file. Under the Site heading in the Navigation Panel, right-click the data logger and click Property. The isic Data Logger Communication Properties window will appear. Connect through the internet. Enter the correct data logger address, IP address and port number (default is 500). Click Test Connection. More advanced instruction on testing cellular communication within ichart is available in the ichart manual. Colby College System Owner s Manual 4

6 Step 5: Connect Sensors to SDL500C The SDL500C Data Logger has a topside antenna port and five sensor ports for connection of instruments. Step 6: Gather Sample Data With all the sensors connected and the SDL500C receiving power, gather sample data using ichart software. The SDL500 data logger has been preprogrammed to log a data point every 30 minutes. Taking at least 4 hours of sample data is recommended to confirm functionality of all instruments. Consult manuals or contact NexSens if any data is outside of the expected range. Refer to the ichart manual in the Important Documents section for more information. 8 SDL500C Quick Start Guide The SDL500C is a cellular data logger enclosed in submersible housing. Communication via cellular telemetry is possible when an A49-SDL antenna is connected. The SDL500C features unique UW underwater communication and sensor connections which prevent fluid access. Five sensor ports are available for connection to industrystandard digital and analog interfaces. Warning: The A49-SDL antenna is not submersible and cellular communication is not possible underwater. What s Included SDL500C Submersible Data Logger (8) D-Cell Alkaline Batteries Maintenance Kit Powering the SDL500C The SDL500C is powered internally with (8) D- Cell alkaline batteries. 1. Remove the battery lid using an Allen wrench for additional leverage if necessary. 2. Install the (8) D-Cell batteries according to the label on the communication bulkhead. The SDL500C is equipped with reverse polarity protection. 3. Thread the battery lid back onto the SDL. Use an Allen wrench for additional leverage to tighten it back down. Warning: The battery lid incorporates two o- ring seals. These seals must be clean and lubricated for watertight integrity in submersible applications. Connecting to the SDL500C The SDL500C connects to the PC through cellular telemetry. 1. Power the SDL500C. 2. Plug an antenna (A49-SDL sold separately) into the port on the communication bulkhead. Be sure the double O-ring seal is being made. 3. See Configuration below for adding the SDL500C to ichart. Field Installation The versatility of the SDL500C allows the user to design application specific deployment. Several options include bottom-deployment, pipe deployment, structure mounting, or use with NexSens data buoys. 1. All physical sensor connections must be made prior to deployment. Sensors not manufactured by NexSens require cable connectorization. 2. Check all ports for the double o-ring seal required for watertight integrity before submerging the SDL500C. Also, avoid cross threading of port plugs or cables with the SDL bulkheads. Configuration 1. Ensure power is supplied to the data logger. 2. Add the SDL500C to an ichart project file. To accomplish this: Follow the setup device wizard to add a site name, and then select SDL- 500C from the list of NexSens data loggers. Enter the IP address, IP Port (leave at 500) and and click Test Connection to check. 3. Add sensors in ichart by selecting the manufacturer and model number. 4. The 15-meter long cable should be coiled up so the bundle can fit through the buoy center hole. The Cyclops-7 has a native mv output. It is converted into Modbus RS-485 using the mv-485 adapter. The 2 LI-COR sensors are analog sensors. They are connecting to the SDL analog port A using the 2-way UW adapter. For more information on correctly scaling a LI-COR sensor using your calibration certificates: When T-Node FRs are assembled in a string, the Modbus addresses for each one must be in order (e.g. 11, 12, 13 ). If a new T-Node FR is to be added to a string, its address will need to fit in that order. 10 Mounting Underwater LI-COR PAR Sensor To install the underwater PAR sensor, mount the Zebra-Tech Hydro-Wiper to the M-ARM-P mounting arm. Note that a short bolt is used at the end of the M-ARM mounting arm and a long bolt is used to its side. 11 Securing Underwater M-ARM-P to Buoy Run the cables from the PAR sensor and wiper along the M-ARM. Secure the M-ARM mounting arm to the buoy with a hose clamp. Reinforce the hold by attaching the M-ARM to two bottom eye hooks on the buoy using additional hose clamps. Use cable ties to hold cables against the M-ARM and reduce risk of tangling.
