1 Electronic CANbus Joystick Market Specification
2 Product Description The joystick is a reliable, ergonomic and configurable control solution. We leveraged our experience in the controls industry, considered modern customer requirements, and applied state of the art design technology to create the Electronic CANbus Joystick. Robust The was designed for high life and durability. A ball and socket concept was used to reduce the number of components and simplify the complexity of moving parts. As a result the WM- 580 has better environmental protection and substantial increase in endurance life over its competitors. Ergonomic Simplifying the design of the joystick base also allowed us to focus on an ergonomic design for the joystick handles. Two years of research went into the design of the handles utilizing a kinesiologist as well as operator focus groups. The end result is a joystick design with proper mechanical kinematics that minimize user fatigue and provide increased uptime for the end customer. Configurable The has been made available in any of the released configurations in the Joystick Part Number List starting on page 10. Other configurations can be made to order to meet the needs of your specific application. In addition, we can customize the base or handles to provide an integrated solution to the overall control experience. Please contact us at info@wmco.com to discuss your application and how the joystick base and handles can be customized. 2

4 Programming Definition The Williams Controls Joysticks communicate using the SAE J199 specification. The J199 protocol maps instruments to different Parameter Group Numbers or PGNs. The Right Hand Joystick sends up to two PGN messages: PGN Basic Joystick Message 1 This message contains the X and Y position of the joystick and the current status of the buttons. PGN 6498 Extended Joystick Message 1 This message contains the current status of the thumbwheel. The Left Hand Joystick sends up to two PGN messages: PGN Basic Joystick Message 2 This message contains the X and Y position of the joystick and the current status of the buttons. PGN Extended Joystick Message 2 This message contains the current status of the thumbwheel. The right and left hand joystick pushbuttons, trigger, and thumbwheel parameters are mapped to the following Suspect Parameter Numbers (SPNs). Joystick Parameter Map Parameter Name SPN Right SPN Left Button Button Button Button Button Button Button Thumbwheel 2677, 2672, 2667, , 2709, 2704, 2699 Both left and right hand joysticks send all SPNs that relate to both the X and Y joystick positions. All J199 messages begin with a 29-Bit Identifier Field called a Protocol Data Unit, or PDU. The following tables display the Joysticks PDU Source Address (SA) and final PDU Identifier. Joystick PDUs J199 Message Source Address (hex) PDU (hex) Basic Joystick Message 1 (BJM1) 4 CFDD64 Extended Joystick Message 1 (EJM1) 4 CFDD74 Basic Joystick Message 2 (BJM2) 5 CFDD85 Extended Joystick Message 2 (EJM2) 5 CFDD95 The status of the joystick switches and X and Y position are mapped directly to corresponding parameters in the J199 specification. Additional PDU parameters are given in the J199 specifications referenced to this document. 4
