2 Spectra T the spectra T950 library: innovative excellence The Spectra T950 enterprise-class library is designed and built to directly address customer frustration with the entire process of data backup. The Spectra T950 library makes it easy to manage both disk and tape by integrating them in one library, handles encryption and backup in a single step, reduces staff involvement tremendously, scales in performance and capacity, supplies a range of support options including around-the-clock, worldwide, on-site support, and a unique self-service option all with a design that yields up to ten times the storage density of competing libraries. The T950, built on nine generations of hardware and software, shares a common set of features across all Spectra T-Series libraries. The field-proven, sophisticated architecture common to these libraries is Spectra s BlueScale environment. just add disk: truly integrated and automated mobile RXT SabreMedia An extraordinary option for the Spectra T950 is its automation of removable RXT Sabre RAID, using RXT SabreDrives and SabreMedia. Portable RXT Sabre combines the reliability of RAID, the mobility of tape, and the performance of disk. RXT Sabre capacity expands just as tape does; to add capacity, simply add more SabreMedia. An RXT SabreDrive, with its RAID controller, matches the size of an LTO tape drive. Instead of writing to tape cartridges, RXT Sabre technology writes to portable SabreMedia Disk. Each SabreMedia pack is composed of multiple SATA disks sealed in a rugged enclosure. Now a single library platform handles both disk and tape managed with a single interface, within a single footprint. Using RXT Sabre in the Spectra T950, you add disk to your data center without a huge initial investment, and without any change to your backup environment, strategy, or storage footprint. The Spectra T950 brings an elegant, straightforward solution to the problem: TeraPack containers, each container holding multiple tapes and identified with its own unique bar code. Although users can easily access individual cartridges in the T950, they are no longer required to do so. With hundreds or thousands of cartridges in a single library, this technology automatically reduces handling time by 90 percent. For example, with ten LTO tapes per TeraPack case, users can load ten TeraPack containers (that s 100 tapes) in under three minutes, compared to the hour it would take to load 100 cartridges into a competing library. Because cartridges in the Spectra T950 are very rarely handled one-by-one, cartridges are protected from mishandling and damage. It s easy to protect exported TeraPack media by snapping on a dust cover, which protects cartridges and lets containers stack easily. Further, because TeraPack containers themselves are bar-coded, users can track each pack of cartridges using a single identifier, even outside the library. Rotation manager reporting integrates exported TeraPack barcodes into backup software applications. TeraPack containers are also compatible with off-site shipping containers provided by media storage companies such as Iron Mountain.

You can tailor the library to suit your current data requirements, and expand the library to keep up with data as it grows over the years, adding slots, drives, and more types of media, including RXT SabreMedia disk. A minimum initial configuration has as few as 100 tape slots and two drives, and can scale to over 7,450 slots and 120 tape drives. The T950 is compatible with future generations of tape and Sabre disk technologies as they evolve. Our philosophy: pay only for what you need today, not what you might need a year from now. This lowers the up-front investment, yet expansion capabilities guarantee that the library can handle future demands. For example, as your data grows, you may require additional slots in your library. Shared Library Services (SLS) lets data centers implement simple, integrated partitioning, so that a single library appears to the network as multiple libraries. Unlike other partitioning solutions that involve complicated external partitioning servers, network connections, and proprietary client software, SLS lets users partition the Spectra T950 quickly through the library s easy-to-use touch-screen interface or through a Web login. The user simply names the partition, then designates drives and slots associated with it. This same interface can be displayed using a Web browser from a remote location. Another option for monitoring your Spectra T950 is Observatory, part of the Telescope suite. Observatory is a browser-based application that monitors the activity of one or more Spectra Logic libraries at a glance.
