MPS 150/190 Mechanical MPS Glass Clamp MPS Side Panel Beamsplitter Clamp Pivot Beamsplitter Clamp SETTING UP Turn out the 2 legs and place the MPS unit in the working position and ensure it is level and on a firm surface. Adjust the beamsplitter clamp to approximately 45 degree tilt using the lower thumb screw as shown in Diagram 1. Avoiding finger prints, fit the beamsplitter centrally into the clamp and tighten the two screws of the beamsplitter clamp. PACKING AWAY Ensure the MPS unit is sent to its home position, remove the beamsplitter and, for protection, screw down the beamsplitter clamp until it is horizontal. Close the legs against the pole. CARE AND MAINTENANCE The telescopic sections of the MPS unit must be kept clean and free from dents and scratches. Note: DO NOT PAINT THESE SECTIONS. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN BEAMSPLITTER CLAMP TO POLE ALLEN SCREW, AS THIS CAN TWIST THE POLE OUT OF ALIGNMENT. GENERAL Beamsplitter Tilt Adjuster The MPS units have been designed to work with 10.4, 12, 15, 17 and 19 flatpanel monitors. These simply rest on the top of the case, or by sliding the monitors into the VESA mount. The microprocessor controlled height function make the MPS an indispensable tool where presentations involve more than one speaker, particularly if they are of different heights. Each speaker can have the height of the glass adjusted at rehearsal, and stored in the microprocessor memory by pressing a numbered key on the controller. The number is dedicated to this particular speaker and the chosen setting can be recalled later by pressing the same number key

MPS Hand Control When used locally the controller plugs into the 4-way XLR range socket on the side of the pole to set up the various heights of presenters at the front of the stage. When used remotely from the poles it requires a separate 12V DC power supply plugged into the 4- way XLR range plug. The control signals now get to the pole via a BNC lead plugged into BNC socket on the controller and looped-through the poles network BNC sockets. The controller defaults to operating all the poles on the network with a single key press. This means if you press key 1 all the poles will move to position 1. To move a single pole from back stage to memory location see Identify (I) in keyboard operation. Keyboard Operation Pressing and releasing any of the numeric keys will cause all the poles on the network to move to that memory height stored in their memories. The up/down cursor keys can control all the poles on the network or the pole selected with the Identified (I) key

The Touch Screen Display The display is a capacitive touch screen for greater accuracy. The screen is glass so should not be abused. The screen has a vibrator on it to give the keys tactile feed back The top line of the display shows status messages or asks for inputs from the user. When the controller is first connected it displays the software version number and the software production date, then it searches locally and remotely until it finds at least one pole, whereupon Telescript is displayed and then the pole(s) status. The display shows which pole(s) are present by the red dot(s) on the key pad. The display shows which position the poles are at if all the same by colouring the pads number RED, the status message at the top will also say all the same number or Home. If they are not at the same position the status message will inform you of each poles position. The Cyan coloured keys:- Control the vertical position of the pole(s) with the Arrow keys. Enable you to copy a stored height from one pole to another remotely down the BNC network with the C Copy key Change which pole the arrow keys and store function control down the BNC with the I Identify key. The number you select is then shown by the yellow highlight on the pad number you selected. Note: If you select a missing pole the default setting of the lowest pole will be selected instead. You can also cancel the selection by pressing any of the other Cyan keys at this point. The hand control returns to normal operation if you do. (2 presses) The Identify key also allows you to send the selected pole only to a stored location. (3 presses) The Identify key also allows you to send either a single pole (if identified) or all the poles to a height in inches. The I and C functions time out after 5 seconds if you don t enter anything except when in send to a height

Status Line Screen Messages These messages tell the operator the situation the poles connected to the controller are in. "Updating Poles! " "NO Poles Present" "All Home" The Controller is updating its information on the poles (performed after a command is sent to the poles). No poles are currently being detected (check your leads and poles have power). All pole(s) are at the Home Height. "All x" All Pole(s) are at height stored in memory x. "Pole Home" Pole x is at its Home height. "Pole mem y" Pole x is at height stored in memory y. "Pole x Moving" Pole x is moving between stored heights. "x Between Mems!" Pole x is between is stopped between stored heights. Pole x STUCK!" Pole x is not able to move (check Motor fuse and pole for obstructions). "x Lost & Stuck" Pole x is stuck and between stored heights. "---- ERROR! ----" Communications Error When plugged in directly into pole using 4 pin cable. The pole you are plugged into will be adjusted using the up and down Arrow keys. Pressing and releasing a number key or the home key (H) will make the pole go to the stored location for that key. HOME should be fully retracted with a Telescript beamsplitter in the glass clamp in portrait format. Pressing and holding a number key for 3 seconds will store the height the pole is currently set to at that key pad. HOME key cannot be changed. When connected to the pole(s) via the BNC cable network. The cursor keys on the BNC network normally control all the poles on the network together. When an Arrow key is pressed the poles move one step and then stop, Hold to Move is displayed on the controller status line, then after a brief pause they start to move continuously until the key is released, Release to Stop is now displayed on the controller status line. The lower numbered pole is the master (so it is useful to know which one this is before starting). When the key is released the height the master pole is at is transferred the other pole which will then move to match the master

You can control a single pole via the I (Identify) key as above using the Arrow keys and storing positions. Select the pole by pressing the Identify I key and selecting the pole required (see Identify above) The Up/Down Arrow keys will move the selected pole up and down slowly to enable the height to be chosen. Whilst an Arrow key is pressed the selected pole number and the speed setting are displayed on the status line. When the desired height has been achieved, press and hold, a numeric key to store this height. Whilst the key is pressed, the display flashes between Release to Move and Hold to Store. You must continue pressing for 3-seconds. After 3 seconds n Stored is displayed where n is the key you are pressing. This confirms the height has been stored in the memory of the selected pole. You can send the identified pole to a stored location. 2 presses of I followed by valid height key. 3 presses of I will allow you to send a selected (identified) pole to a height in inches (ins) or all the poles if none are selected (identified). Using the displayed numeric pad enter the height you want between 20 and 82 inches. There is a back space key to correct mistakes. With the height entered touch the enter key. The pole or poles will then move to the height selected. If you enter heights above or below the limits the pole will move to either the maximum or minimum positions. Press X to return to normal hand control operation You can copy a stored memory from one pole, too another pole memory using the C Copy key. Press C you will be asked for the pole you want to copy from. (It must be present on the network) Press the key of the pole you want to copy from (the red dots help with which poles are present). You will be asked for the destination pole you want to copy the stored height to Press the key of the pole you want to copy to (the red dots help with which poles are present). You will be asked for the destination memory you want to copy the stored height to. Press the key of the memory you want to copy to. When copied, pressing the memory location key will tell both poles to go to that memory, only the destination pole will move as the source pole is already there

The suggested method of use is have a power lead on the stage for the hand control coiled up by the last pole, also have a 15 foot BNC cable plugged in to the last pole. Use these leads to power the controller and talk to the poles on the stage. The advantage of this method is you can setup one pole for a speaker then simple copy the height from that pole to the next. Use I to select the pole to adjust, adjust it using the Arrow keys, store it s position by pressing and holding a key for 3 seconds, then use the C key to copy the position from the adjusted pole (source) to the other pole (destination) and of course make the memory position the same as the one you just stored. The destination pole will now move to the matched position. Pin-outs: Pin 1 Ground, Pin 2 & Pin 3 Not used, Pin volts DC. 5v INT inline with internal 5v circuit. Local Control Socket Controls pole locally for setting-up heights. Pole Identification (Pole Ident, Silver Button) changes poles identity (number)

Network Loop Through Network loop-through controls poles from remote control back stage via BNC cable. Send Home Button will cause pole to drop down to home if no external controller is detected. Useful if the pole was left up and the controllers have been packed away at de-rig

LCD Display: Normally shows the pole identity number. You should note which one is which as this will help when copying or moving the poles on stage via the BNC network. If there is no controller plugged-in, LCD displays No Comms and the pole identity number. During power-up LCD displays Telescript, Software Version and the Software Production Date. Pole Stuck!" Pole is not able to move. Check Motor fuse and pole for obstructions. Can also be displayed when the beamsplitter is not fitted or fitted in landscape orientation and the pole is sent Home because the Tilt Spring cannot be overcome by the motor without all of the beamsplitter's weight to help it

Trouble Shooting If the hand control can t find the poles when on the end of the control BNC but works when locally plugged in try the following procedure:- First test the long BNC going back stage by sending a video feed down it. If this is OK do the following. Replace if suspect. Isolate the daisy chained poles by unplugging the first linking short BNC. If this cures the fault to the first pole check the following. 1) Do the Poles have different Pole numbers? If not make them different. 2) Test the short linking BNC between the poles, if this has a short circuit it shorts out the signal from back stage as they are all on the same line and all linked poles will display No Comms. If it is open circuit only the second and subsequent pole/s will not respond to the hand control and will display on its LCD screen No Comms. Replace if suspect. 3) The BNC cable that the control signals are sent down should NOT be put through a video distribution amplifier as signals are sent along this cable in both directions. 4) The BNC cable that the control signals are sent along must not have its outer screen earthed (it should be floating) as it is used for control data. This can happen by accident if a cable loom is used where all the cables are about the same length and a video cable outer touches the outer of the control BNC. Wrap insulating tape around the screen of the control BNC to stop this happening. 5) The last pole should have NO termination on the last control BNC connector

Setting Up the pole These instructions are for engineering maintenance use only If in any doubt please call for advice. Pole adjustment If pole sections stick then check the following Are the pole sections free of contaminants? Clutch adjustment The clutch enables the motor to continue turning without blowing the motor fuse if the pole gets stuck. If the clutch is too tight the motor fuse may blow if the poles gets stuck. There is also a timeout in the micro-controller software to prevent damage if the pole gets stuck. If the clutch is too loose it will slip and the pole will not rise to its full height or be able to fold the glass flat when sent to home. Clutch adjustment can be performed without removing the cover, via the clutch adjustment Allen screw on the side of the cover see Diagram below. Tighten the Allen screw evenly on the clutch until it just grips at full height. Then further tighten them all by one-quarter turn. Now fit a glass beamsplitter in portrait orientation and adjust the glass tilt to 45 degrees. Care should be exercised whilst adjusting the clutch as you are working close to a piece of moving glass, which could hit you. From a memory location, send the Pole to Home. The pole should retract almost fully and then the glass should pull down flat. If the clutch slips and the glass does not go flat, tighten the screw by a 1/8 th turn. Send the pole to a memory and then Home again. Repeat until the glass goes flat. If the pole does not retract enough to drive the beamsplitter flat see the Home Adjustment section. Then repeat the above. Remove the glass. From a memory location send the pole Home. The Pole should retract nearly fully and then the clutch should slip for a few seconds until the software timeout aborts the operation. The Pole Display should read POLE STUCK. This proves you have not over tightened the clutch. If the clutch does not slip the Motor fuse is likely to blow or at least be strained. Replace the fuse before using the pole. Loosen the screw by a ¼ of a turn and repeat the above

Home Adjustment The Home position is when the pole is fully retracted. In the Home position the beamsplitter clamp will fold flat provided a glass beamsplitter is mounted in the beamsplitter clamp in portrait orientation. The Home position should not need resetting but if it does follow the instructions below. REMOVE the glass before adjusting the home position as you are working close to a piece of moving glass, which could hit you. To set home requires a flat blade screw driver. You need to start with the pole head set flat use the tilt adjust to do this. So it can fully retract. Remove the AC power lead. Replace the AC power lead and immediately press and hold down the Send Home and Pole Ident Buttons at the same time. This has to be done until the Telescript, Version and date info appear on the screen. The Data LED will go Red for 7 seconds this indicates the pole is being driven down. The Screen at this time will be displaying the Ethernet MAC code in Hexidecimal numbers

After 7 seconds the Data LED will go green. This indicates the pole is now safe to adjust. The screen now shows the target (Tgt where it should be) and the actual position (Rslt) of the pole. If they match within a count of 1 it is correct and should not be adjusted. If they do not match then you have to insert the flat blade screw driver into the adjuster hole on the other side of the pole, In there is a cog with a screw driver slot in the centre turn the screw driver slot one way or the other to make Rslt match the Tgt. When done remove the AC power. Power up the pole and test out its function now with the Home correctly set. During this setting process the pole will also program its memories to some useful factory default values. Starting at about 53 inches for position 1 and going up in 2-3 inch approx. steps. Position 14 is set to 22 inches almost fully retracted but with the glass up, Position 15 is set to full height 82inches. All of these can of course be over written during normal use. You can display the stored heights of the Identified pole when the pole is in normal operation mode. 3 presses of I will display the 15 stored heights in centimetres from the floor to the glass clamp pivot. Touch the screen anywhere to go back to the keyboard. Exercise caution operating the pole with the cover removed as mains voltages are present, as well as rotating drums, if you are in any doubt contact Telescript for help
