1 SPYDER UNITARY CONTROLLER: BACNET The PUB1012S, 4024S, 38S, and 38SR Spyder controllers are part of the Phoenix Controls portfolio of unitary controllers designed to control HVAC equipment. These BACnet MS/TP network devices provide many options and advanced system features that allow state-of-the-art commercial building control. Each controller is programmable and configurable using the Phoenix Controls Workbench software. The controllers are for use in unitary and advanced HVAC control applications. The user chooses which function blocks to use and how to connect them; each function block s behavior is userdefined. Each controller contains a host micro-controller to run the main HVAC application and a second micro-controller for BACnet MS/TP network communications. Each controller provides flexible, universal inputs for external sensors, digital inputs, and a combination of analog outputs and digital outputs. An input/output (I/O) expansion module Physical sensors, switches and actuators may be connected to the Spyder and values passed across the room-level network to a Theris or Traccel valve-mounted BACnet controller for use in its control sequence. Data from the Spyder may also be passed across the building-level network to the BMS for monitoring purposes. A controller integrated into the Theris or Traccel system Data may be passed between the valve mounted controllers and Spyder on the room-level network to supplement the control functions of either device. An example might be interlocking door locks between an anteroom and a space under control so that doors may not be opened until the pressure stabilizes or a certain number of air changes have occurred.the Spyder may also be used to implement virtually any room-level control sequence that relies on inputs from physical sensors, switches or network based variables to develop the desired control output, function or interlock. 4 Built-In Functions Built-in functions refer to any room-level control sequence relying on inputs from physical sensors, switches, or network-based variables that can be defined using the Spyder s programming toolbox of function blocks, built-in features, and utilities. 5 MUNICATIONS Each controller uses a BACnet MS/TP communications port. The controller s data is presented to other controllers over a twistedpair MS/TP network, which uses the EIA-485 signaling standard capable of the following baud rates: 9.6, 19.2, 38.4, 76.8, or kilobits per second (configured at global controller). The Spyder BACnet controllers are master devices on the MS/TP network. Each Spyder BACnet controller uses a high-quality EIA-485 transceiver and exerts 1/4 unit load on the MS/TP network. Cabling should be selected that meets or exceeds the BACnet Standard which specifies the following: an MS/TP EIA-485 network shall use shielded, twisted-pair cable with characteristic impedance between 100 and 130 ohms. Distributed capacitance between conductors shall be less than 100 pf per meter (30 pf per foot). Distributed capacitance between conductors and shield shall be less that 200 pf per meter (60 pf per foot). Foil or braided shields are acceptable. The BACnet MS/TP network is polarity sensitive. The maximum BACnet MS/TP network Bus segment length is 4,000 ft. (1,219 m) using recommended wire. Repeaters must be used when making runs longer than 4,000 ft. (1,219 m). A maximum of three repeaters can be used between any two devices. The controller enclosure is constructed of a plastic base plate and a plastic factory-snap-on cover. The cover does not need to be removed from the base plate for either mounting or wiring. Removable terminal blocks are used for all wiring connections, which allow the controller to be wired before or after mounting. Attach all wiring to the appropriate terminal block.s The controller can be mounted in any orientation. Ventilation openings are designed into the cover to allow proper heat dissipation, regardless of the mounting orientation. 7 Spyder Relay - PUB6834SR Only The digital outputs of the Spyder with relay are designed differently and therefore are wired differently than the other Spyder products. The relay outputs are internally designed to provide up to 3 isolated banks of contacts. The factory installs removable jumpers between 24Vac and common of relay banks A (three outputs) and B (four outputs). The last relay remains isolated but could be jumped in the field if desired. 8 Phoenix Controls Wiring Recommendations Recommended Cable Specifications All circuits must conform to the requirements of an NEC Power Minimum cable section 18 AWG Class 2 (dry) circuit. Use cable sizes recommended by Phoenix Controls (see Inputs Minimum cable section 20 AWG (twisted pair) table). Digital Outputs Minimum cable section 18 AWG Use wire for ease of installation. Follow good wiring practices: Analog Outputs Minimum cable section 20 AWG (twisted pair) Locate cables away from sources of electrical interference Maximum wire gauge is 14 AWG (2.0 sq mm) (EMI/RFI). Do not run signal or communication cable in the same conduit or wire way as power cables. If signal cable must cross power cables place these at a 90-degree angle. Shield or drain wires, if required, should be wrapped with insulating tape to prevent contact with exposed conductors or contacts. Maintain a consistent color code or polarity all the way through the wiring system. Power supply and signal isolation on I/O devices vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Verify the wiring device manufacturer s recommendations for isolating power and signal common connections and maintain polarity. Local and national electrical codes take precedence. Strip 0.25" (6.4 mm) of insulation from each conductor, twist the strands, insert the conductor fully into the terminal block, and tighten the terminal. Test the wire connection by pulling on each conductor. See the Phoenix Recommenced Cables section for approved cable manufacturers and wire types. Power Connections The PUB1012S, 4024S, 38S, and 38SR may be powered by 24 Vac only. When locating the device, consider the location of the transformers/power supplies, cable runs, and connected load to ensure proper operating voltage. Each Spyder controller requires 24 Vac from a Class 2 transformer (i.e., no larger than 100 VA). A single transformer can power more than one Spyder controller. To calculate the required transformer power: - Sum together the power requirements of the controller(s) and all peripheral devices powered by it. - For peripheral devices the in-rush power ratings (i.e., worst case values) should be used. NOTE: See the Spyder (BACnet ) Installation Guide for detailed instructions. Input and Output Connections The Spyder supports a wide variety of universal inputs and analog and digital outputs. Signal input types are defined and scaled using the Phoenix Controls Workbench software. Two terminations are provided for each input. Power for inputs must be externally supplied. The Spyder will provide a ma power source for external sensor power. See the following section for wiring configuration. Note: Multiple power sources may be present. 10 TROUBLESHOOTING Status Information The LED on the front of the controller provides a visual indication of the status of the device. When the controller receives power, the LED appears in one of the following allowable states described in the following table. Application Program CRC being checked. This takes 1-2 seconds and occurs on each restart (power up, reset and reflash, and following configuration file download). Controller is operating normally. BACnet Status LED The LED on the front of the controller, between the BACnet MS/TP terminals and MAC Address DIP Switches, provides a visual indication of the BACnet MS/TP communication status.
