Upgrade Procedure This upgrade assumes your OptiPac is fully operational. If you need assistance or have questions about this upgrade, contact Bering Customer service by one of the following methods. Phone: (408) x412 Fax: (408) Upgrading the Firmware 1. Remove the OptiPac-3 from the rack mount by removing four screws from the bottom of the rack mount. 2. Flip the OptiPac-3 over and write the serial number here: The serial number is required later in the procedure. Serial Numbers with Controller Note: 3. Determine the probable PCBA installed in your OptiPac-3 by checking the serial number list in Table 1 below. If your OptiPac-3 serial number appears on the list you should have an Controller PCBA and should use the first cartridge P/N in the table 2 below. If your serial number does not appear in the list at the end of the document you probably have an Controller PCBA. The following OptiPac-3 serial numbers have been identified by Bering as having the Controller PCBA. Even if your OptiPac-3 does not appear on this list, it may contain this PCBA. If you attempt to upgrade using the wrong firmware upgrade cartridge it will indicate No Loadable Firmware Found on the front panel LCD. If this happens, go to the main menu, eject the cartridge, recycle the power and run the upgrade procedure again from step 10 on page 3 with the other cartridge. 0302A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A A002 Table 1: OptiPac-3 serial numbers with PCBA Determining Base Firmware Version 4. Plug a power cord into the OptiPac-3 system. 5. While pressing both the ENTER and SELECT buttons, power on the OptiPac-3. 3 8. If your ROM version is F.10 proceed to the EPROM Upgrade Procedure on page 8, otherwise continue with the next step. 9. After determining the Controller Part number, select the correct firmware upgrade cartridge from the following table. Record the firmware version from the selected cartridge here: PCBA P/N Base Firmware Cartridge P/N C.10 C XX D.10 D.80, F.20 F.50, F.6n XX Table 2: Upgrade cartridges 10. It should match the version number printed on the label of the upgrade cartridge (refer to the number you recorded in step 9 above). If it displays No Loadable Firmware Found, see the Note on page Press SELECT to change the No to Yes and then press ENTER. The Flash memory will be erased and the firmware will be copied to the Flash memory. When the firmware load is complete the cartridge will eject and the OptiPac-3 will automatically reboot. 21. Remove the cartridge from the drive. 22. After the last digit press ENTER to confirm the serial number. 23. Go to the Utilities menu and check the FW version. It should now match the new firmware version (example: F.60-nn) 24. Power off the unit and unplug the AC power cord. 25. Continue with the following section to upgrade the hardware. Removing the Cover 26. Remove four screws securing the cover to the back panel AF Upgrade Instructions Page 3 of 10
Remove four screws around back panel Then slide cover back one inch and lift straight up 27. Slide the cover toward the back of the OptiPac-3 about one inch until it stops. 28. Remove the cover by lifting it straight up. Removing the Drive Plate 29. Unplug the 50 pin gray flat ribbon SCSI cable from the back of both drives, noting the orientation of pin 1 of the cable (red or blue stripe). Refer to the illustration after step Unplug the DC power cable from the back of both drives. 31. Remove the three screws securing the drive plate to the chassis. Slide drive plate 1/2 inch back and 1/2 inch to the right. Drive Plate Remove three screws 32. Slide the drive plate toward the back of the chassis, then slide the drive plate out the right side of the chassis. 33. Remove the four screws securing the right drive to the drive plate. Set the screws and the drive aside for attachment to the new drive plate. Attaching the MO Drive to the New Drive Plate 34. Set the MO drive that you removed in the previous section onto the right side (next to the removable hard drive) of the new drive plate. The front of the MO drive should be even with the front of the hard drive chassis. 35. Secure the MO drive to the new drive plate with the same four flat head screws you removed in the previous section. Note: 36. If the Controller PCBA installed in your OptiPac-3 is , remove the front left screw and the standoff below it from the hard drive adapter Page 4 of AF Upgrade Instructions
PCBA. You may have to loosen the other three screws to remove the standoff from the drive plate. Be sure to tighten the other three screws tightly. If Controller is remove this screw and the standoff below it. Hard drive Hard drive adapter PCBA Drive plate MO drive 37. Set the jumpers on the MO drive to the following settings: MO drive on right side of the drive plate Installing the Drive Plate 38. Install the new drive plate into the OptiPac-3 from the right side and slide it forward AF Upgrade Instructions Page 5 of 10
Note: 39. Secure the drive plate to the chassis with three 6-32x1/4 screws. 40. Plug the flat ribbon SCSI cable to the two drives on the drive plate. Make sure the middle connector is connected to the back of the MO (right) drive and the cable is terminated (ends) at the removable hard drive adapter PCBA. 41. Plug the DC power harness cables into the MO drive and the small hard drive adapter PCBA on the drive plate. The longer cable goes to the optical drive on the right. You may carefully clip the existing DC power cable tie wraps as applicable to enable more freedom of movement and reduce cable strain. SCSI cable end SCSI cable end SCSI cable middle connector 42. Set switch 8 of SW1 on the main Controller board to the on (closed) position and leave the remaining switches 1 7 of SW1 to the off (open) position. 43. Plug in the power cord. Page 6 of AF Upgrade Instructions
44. Power on the OptiPac Ensure that the Model displayed during power up is 8631AF. 46. Power off the OptiPac-3 and unplug the power cord. Installing the Cover 47. Place the cover onto the chassis from above and slide it forward. 48. Secure the cover with four 6-32x1/4 panhead screws through the back panel. 49. Place the provided upgrade label on the bottom of the OptiPac-3, next to the original label. The serial number of the unit will remain the same. 50. After placing the OptiPac-3 in the rack mount, secure the keys to the OptiPac-3 or rack mount chassis with a string, lanyard, or wire of some kind. The keys are easily misplaced. 51. Read the manual for proper operation procedures. Returning the Original Drive 52. Using the original packing box and the included return address label, return the drive plate, MO drive, the EPROMs and firmware upgrade cartridges to Bering at the following address: Bering Technology, Inc. 8631AF Upgrade Exchange 1400 Dell Avenue, Suite B Campbell, CA AF Upgrade Instructions Page 7 of 10
EPROM Upgrade Procedure If you determine the base firmware version is F.10-04, follow these instructions to upgrade the firmware from the included EPROMs. 1.
