1 Description Demonstration circuit DC507A is a resistive protection network designed to interface the LTC 986 demonstration boards (DC508 for LTC986 or DC68 for LTC986-). The LTC986 is a pin and software compatible 0-channel version of the 0-channel LTC98. The LTC986 includes several new modes enabling external protection/ filtering resistors for -/-/-wire RTDs, thermistors, and thermocouples. The DC507A includes a universal input -input terminal block, front end protection/filtering resistors, and a interface for connecting to the DC508/DC68 demonstration circuit. The -input terminal block (J) can directly interface to a single -/-/-wire RTD, or a thermistor, or a thermocouple (with options for cold junction compensation). A single hardware design is shared between all sensor types. Switching between sensors simply requires a change in software (channel assignment programming). All LTC986 DEMO MANUAL DC507A LTC986 and LTC986- Input Protected Universal Temperature Measurement System on a Chip input channels are isolated from the terminal block by a.kω, W protection resistor, while the complementing DC508 contains 00pF filtering capacitors. As a reference, the DC507A includes a top level hookup diagram for each sensor type, see Figure. The DC507A requires a DC5 or DC608 kit. These kits contain the LTC986 motherboard (DC508 or DC68) and a Linduino One (DC06) USB interface board. Additionally, QuikEval software is used to program the LTC986 channel assignment data and display the temperature results. 2 DEMO MANUAL DC507A Setup Global Parameters Setup In order to run the LTC986 in the universally protected mode, all kelvin mode global variables need to be set, see Figure. Note, these variables are not available with the LTC98 and LTC98. The LTC986 will automatically determine the current mode based on the sensor type and/or the number of sensor wires. Figure. 3 DEMO MANUAL DC507A Setup Sense Resistor Setup The DC508 includes a precision kω sense resistor. This Sense resistor is assigned to CH for all RTDs and Thermistors (see Figure ). Built-In Configurations The LTC986 demonstration software includes stored configurations for each of the sensor type used for the DC507A demonstration board. These can be loaded by selecting the menu function: Configuration > Demo Board > DC507A. (see Figure ). These configurations will automatically load all the channel assignment data and global variables for each sensor. Figure. Sense Resistor Channel Assignment Figure. J The -wire RTD is assigned to CH (see Figure 6) and can be automatically loaded using the configuration file DC507A_MULTI_SENSOR_BOARD WIRE_RTD or manually entered using the LTC986 demonstration software. In the universal protected mode, -wire RTDs have rotation and sharing turned off, the DC507 includes a protected ground connection for the -wire RTD. J The thermistor is assigned to CH (see Figure ) and can be automatically loaded using the configuration file DC507A_MULTI_SENSOR_BOARD_0K_THERMISTOR or manually entered using the LTC986 demonstration software. 8 DEMO MANUAL DC507A Setup Thermocouple Connect the thermocouple between terminals and on terminal block J, see Figure. of sensors can be used for the cold junction compensation. U R J Q CJ DC507A F CJ Option : Active analog temperature sensor (U) tied to CH0. CJ Option : Diode (Q) tied to CH9. CJ Option : -wire RTD connected between terminals and on terminal block J and assigned to CH. CJ Option : Thermistor connected between terminals and on terminal block J and assigned to CH. See pages 6-65 in the LTC986 data sheet for more information. The thermocouple is assigned to CH6 (see Figure ) and can be automatically loaded using the configuration file DC507A_MULTI_SENSOR_BOARD_ THERMICOUPLE_0K_THERMISTOR_CJ or DC507A_ MULTI_SENSOR_BOARD_THERMICOUPLE_PT00 _CJ or manually entered using the LTC986 demonstration software.
