2 MTL IS TERMINALS SURGE PROTECTION MTL offer the MTL6000 range of IS PC Terminals to fulfil the need for a modern remote operator station linked to a process control system. The MTL6000 Terminals are designed to the highest quality standards and equipped with the latest in-house electronic circuitry utilising proven components and materials. IS Terminals are used throughout the world in the production of pharmaceutical and chemical products, on oil platforms and in gas processing plants. The materials and electronic components used in our units meet the highest standards for clean room operation as well as the GMP, GAMP and FDA codes. A unique signal processing technique has been adopted to facilitate optimum image transmission to the MTL IS Terminal unit. This state of the art solution permits a wide range of software to be used, and the transmission of high-resolution images between the PC and the field mounted terminal over distances of up to 500m (1600ft). All electronic systems used on process plants are at risk from surges and transients overvoltages. Whether caused by power faults, load switching or nearby lightning strikes, surges are a daily occurrence on industrial process plants. Surges and transients conducted by signal, communication or mains power cables all have an effect. Production downtime, corruption or loss of data and high repair or replacement costs can have a significant impact. 3 OPERATING PRINCIPLE The MTL6000 IS Terminals optimise costs through the use of the latest technology. The Transmission Card TCV2i receives and converts VGA, PS2 mouse and keyboard signals from the central processing computer on the network into Ex-compatible intrinsically safe signals. These signals are then transmitted to the field mounted MTL6000 IS terminal at high speed on a twisted-pair cable, over distances up to 500 m (1600 ft) into Zone 1, Zone 2 (Class I, Zone 1) or Zone 22 hazardous areas; or into safe (non-hazardous) areas. There is no requirement for any software or hardware conversion, as all software graphics and screens can be viewed immediately when utilising the twisted pair cable and power supply. The field mounted MTL IS Terminal can be powered from 24V DC, 115V AC or 230V AC. Safe Area Connection to a computer processing system can be carried out quickly and cost effectively in 4 simple steps: 1. Make the cable connection between the processing computer and the transmission card TCV2i. 2. Connect the twisted pair cable between the transmission card and the MTL IS Terminal. 3. Connect the power supply cable to the MTL IS Terminal display. 4. Switch on the power supply to the display, the rack and the PC. The MTL IS Terminal is now ready for use. Connect the data cable to the back of the Transmission Card, then route the cable to the mounting column. Mount the Stand Pipe (4 screws), then attach the IS terminal to it. Pull the data cable through the cable gland and plug into the port on the rear of the display. Connect the power supply - Turn on the power supply to the Terminal - Turn on the supply to the rack and Transmission Card - Switch on the PC

4 MODULAR COMPONENTS The modular component concept makes it possible to select the most appropriate operational and display modules to configure the best possible PC terminal solution for the application. All electronic components are intrinsically safe (certified II 2G EEx ib IIC T4), therefore it is possible to install or remove them without halting production. The construction materials have been selected based on long term operational experience in Ex-areas and in arduous industrial environments. The sealing materials used in the MTL IS Terminals have been subjected to increased levels of testing to ensure that the ingress protection meets with the IP 65 standard. The TFT-displays used have been very carefully selected for high resolution to display the clearest images of the processing system. They offer16 million colours and a finetuning feature, via the on-screen-menu, to maximise image replication of the process conditions. The innovative touch screen, trackball and PS2 mouse offer the user a choice for high-precision operation of the cursor. The industrial quality, foil-protected, tactile short-stroke keyboard guarantees ease of use and a long operating life. A choice of special keyboard layouts in different languages, and the facility to create extra keys, enables users to individualise their data input method. 6 DATA TRANSMISSION The TCV2i has been developed for highspeed data transmission and simple installation. The VGA, PS2/mouse and keyboard output signals of the processing computer are converted into intrinsically safe signals using in-house developed special circuitry. The same high quality signals are transmitted and displayed on the field unit located up to 500 m (1600 ft). The TCV2i Transmission Card module uses the Eurocard format and can easily be installed in the 19 Rack 84 multi-unit carrier - or the Rack 42 desktop housing. The Rack 84 has space for up to four Transmission Cards while the Rack 42 will accommodate two. Using an extra daisy chain cable connection, up to 4 MTL IS Terminals can be cascaded. Power to the rack is provided by a PSU2 Eurocard module. The PSU2 module fits into the rack and plugs into a pre-wired connector on the backplane.
