In growing numbers, consumers are enjoying the convenience of these wireless control systems doing the work of raising, lowering, traversing or tilting their window treatments. WIRELESS COMMUNICATION PowerView is a proprietary wireless RF communication language from Hunter Douglas that provides the ultimate in window treatment control. Customers can operate window treatments individually, in groups or in Scenes from one of several control options, including the PowerView Pebble and Surface Remote, an Apple or Android mobile device, or from the Pebble and Surface Scene Controller. 2 Introduction to PowerView ization WHAT IS POWERVIEW? PowerView is the proprietary bi-directional radio frequency (RF) communication protocol used to wirelessly control and monitor Hunter Douglas motorized window treatments. Hunter Douglas gives consumers the best motorization features and control in the industry. Whether opening a single window treatment or closing a houseful of shades at the same time, PowerView ization provides the ultimate in control. WHAT IS RADIO FREQUENCY? Radio frequency (RF) refers to the use of radio waves of a given frequency to wirelessly send data from a transmitter to a receiver. The PowerView system uses radio waves in the 2.4GHz (gigahertz) frequency range to send commands from a PowerView control device to the built-in receiver at the window treatment. Radio waves pass through solid objects and radiate in every direction. That means a remote sending an RF signal does not need to be pointed at a window treatment in order to control it; in fact, the remote does not even have to be in the same room as the window treatment it operates. People use products that send radio frequency signals every day, from cell phones and keyless car FOBs, to baby monitors and even garage door openers. Each device sends out RF signals (radio waves) to a receiver on the other end. If the receiver on the other end doesn t hear the signal being sent, nothing happens. Operational Distance of Radio Waves Range of operation may vary due to common household construction, layout and other wireless devices in the home. Much like reception with a cell phone, there may be better locations within a home to use radio frequency than others. PowerView App POWERVIEW APPLICATIONS PowerView ization works with both horizontal and vertical treatments. It raises and lowers shades and shadings (and tilts the vanes or slats, where applicable); and traverses sheers, shades and gliding window panels (and rotates the vanes, where applicable). For a complete listing of products offered with PowerView ization, see the chart on the next page. ADDITIONAL TERMS TO KNOW ized shade. Any shade product that uses a motor to operate instead of a manual system. Power to a motorized shade can come from batteries, a power supply or household current. Integration. Getting two separate systems (for example, a home automation system and a motorized shade system) to communicate and function together. AC power (line voltage). The form in which electricity is delivered to North American households. AC power is delivered at 100 to 120 volts at a frequency of 60 Hertz. DC power (low voltage). Electric charge that flows in a constant direction, distinguishing it from alternating current (AC). DC power may be obtained from an a DC power supply. Batteries also provide DC power. Most DC motors for window treatments are 12V, 18V or 24V. Power supply. Device that converts AC power from a wall outlet to DC power for low voltage motors. Not to be confused with a transformer which reduces line voltage to a lesser AC power, but does not convert to DC power. Wire gauge. Refers to a standardized AWG wire gauge system for diameters of electrically conducting wire.the cross-sectional area of each gauge is an important factor in its current carrying capacity. 4 Control Options PERSONALIZED CONTROL OPTIONS Window treatments with PowerView ization can be controlled from a variety of different control methods. The PowerView remote is available in two mounting options, the PowerView Pebble for hand-held control or the Surface for wall-mounted operation. In addition, PowerView window treatments can be controlled using the Scene Controller. Like the remote, the Scene Controller module is available in both Pebble and Surface mounts. Every customer is different and that s why Hunter Douglas offers different types of control options. Whether a project has one window covering, a house full of motorized shades or anything in between, PowerView ization is a perfect fit for any home. POWERVIEW REMOTE MODULE Overview The PowerView remote module utilizes a radio frequency (RF) proprietary signal. The remote has been designed so consumers can operate shades individually or in groups. Relying strictly on RF increases the operational range and reliability of the signals. Compatibility The PowerView remote module is compatible with all window treatment products manufactured with PowerView ization. It is not backward compatible with the Platinum App or Platinum Technology systems. 5 Control Options POWERVIEW SCENE CONTROLLER MODULE Overview The PowerView Scene Controller module utilizes RF signals to communicate with the PowerView Hub to select and activate stored Scenes (see page PV-6). Scenes are programmed positions of window treatments either individual window treatments, individual groups or multiple groups. Use the scroll buttons and OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen to quickly select and activate a personalized Scene or select from one of two Favorite Scenes with onebutton activation. Compatibility The PowerView Scene Controller module is compatible with all window treatment products programmed with the PowerView App and stored in the PowerView Hub. It is not backward compatible with the Platinum App or Platinum Technology systems. 6 PowerView App CONTROL WITH THE POWERVIEW APP With the PowerView App, your customers can operate their PowerView window treatments individually, by room or throughout the home using an Apple or Android mobile device at home or on the go. Individual Control The PowerView App provides individual control of window treatments. Each shade, shading, sheer or set of window panels can be moved to a specific position using intuitive product-specific slider bar(s). Our sheer products have two slider bars one to open and close the product, the other to open and close the product s vanes. Horizontal blind products feature a single slider bar to control the rotation of the slats. Sheer products have two slider bars for opening and closing the window treatment and its vanes. Operation by Rooms Your customers can also operate their window treatments by room. For example, all similar shade types in the master bedroom could be lowered with a simple slide of a finger. And similar window treatments in the dining room could be opened with a touch. Scene Operation Set the mood and enhance your environment by controlling the natural light in the room through the use of Scenes. Create personalized position settings (Scenes) for every room in the house and store them in the PowerView Hub. For example: Summer Afternoon moves the shades on the east side of the house open all the way and shades on the west side to halfway closed. Nighttime closes all the window treatments in the house. Daytime Privacy opens the vanes of Silhouette window shadings. The possibilities are endless! The PowerView App can be used to precisely control selected window treatments with a single touch. The Dashboard view shown above displays selected favorite shades and Scenes at a glance. Automated Operation The App also includes time-based automations for more intuitive control of Scenes. Activate Scenes based on the time of day automations are designed to work with you and your everyday life, without having to lift a finger. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS In addition to the PowerView App itself, which is a free download from the Apple App Store or from the Google Play store, a PowerView Hub Kit is required. The kit includes: PowerView Hub, Gen 2. The PowerView Hub is the heart and brain of the system. It stores all programming data, and sends and receives signals to and from window treatments via the PowerView Network. One Hub is required per home network. The PowerView Hub has been updated to provide a more elevated and enhanced experience for the user. See page PV-7 for more information. PowerView Hub, Gen 2 Ethernet cable. The cable connects the Hub to a wireless router for an optional wired connection to the home network. DC power supply. The power supply provides wired power to the Hub. DC power supply cable. The USB cable connects the power supply to the Hub. PowerView Repeater, Gen 2. The repeater extends the range of the PowerView Hub by repeating its signals, and plugs directly into an AC outlet. The repeater now includes a programmable illumination feature, where the illuminated light ring can be customized to change color and intensity with every Scene created in the PowerView App. Note: Additional PowerView Repeaters are available separately for purchase. The mobile device must be an ipad, iphone or ipod touch with ios 10.0 or an Android device running version 4.4 (KitKat) or newer. Customers will also need an Internet connection and a wireless router in the home, which is probably already part of their home network. Compatibility The PowerView App is compatible with all window treatments that are fabricated with PowerView ization. The PowerView App can be used in addition to the PowerView Pebble Remote, Surface Remote, Pebble Scene Controller and Surface Scene Controller. The PowerView Hub and its components are compatible with many third-party home automation systems. Please consult the consumer website ( com/powerview) for details. 7 PowerView App/PowerView Hub GETTING STARTED The PowerView App has been designed to provide an intuitive experience for the user, with new and customizable features and streamlined setup. To get started, download and install the PowerView App on your mobile device. Then, follow the instructions within the app to set up and customize your PowerView Network. Be sure to consult the product guides provided with your PowerView components (PowerView Hub, Gen 2; PowerView Repeater, Gen 2; PowerView Pebble Remote and PowerView Surface Remote) for more detailed information on installation, setup and operation. POWERVIEW HUB PowerView Hub, Gen 2 Overview The PowerView Hub, Gen 2 is the heart and brain of the PowerView system. It stores all programming data, and sends and receives signals to and from window treatments via the PowerView Network. The current PowerView Hub, Gen 2 has the same functionality as the previous PowerView Hub, Gen 1, with new features that improve performance and elevate experience for the user: New, improved processor for faster data communication and processing speed. Wi-Fi or Ethernet network connectivity. Seamless data transfer from your previous PowerView Hub, Gen 1 to the new PowerView Hub, Gen 2. Compatible with many third-party home automation systems. Innovative technology allows the addition of multiple Hubs on a single PowerView Network (see below). PowerView Hub, Gen 2 Configuration The PowerView Hub, Gen 2 firmware has been redesigned to allow for multiple Hubs on a single PowerView Network. This is recommended only for specific cases where the range of the PowerView Network needs to be extended significantly. The first PowerView Hub, Gen 2 installed on the user s Wi-Fi Network is referred to as the Primary Hub. Any additional PowerView Hub, Gen 2 added to the Network will automatically configure itself to become a Secondary Hub, receiving and passing along signals to the shades in proximity. More information on Primary and Secondary Hub identification, as well as setup and operation instructions, can be found within the PowerView App and/or the PowerView Hub, Gen 2 Product Guide. 8 Power Options BATTERY WAND Battery wands are the standard power source for most PowerView systems, whether inside (IB), outside (OB) or end (EB) mounted. Battery wands are mounted either on the front or rear of the headrail, and are designed to allow the batteries to be changed without removing the window treatment from the window. Please consult specific product sections and Installation, Operation and Care instructions for battery wand placement. Replace batteries when the PowerView motor begins to operate slowly. Consumer can register to receive Low Battery Notifications via when they register for a PowerView Account in the PowerView App. Duette with Vertiglide is the only traversing PowerView system that can use a battery wand. Cannot be used with Luminette sheers, Provenance draperies or Skyline panels. Not available on standard (bracket) style systems for Designer Roller Shades, Designer Screen Shades, and Alustra Woven Textures roller shades. Refer to specific product sections for mounting depth requirements. 12V battery wand: 8 AA 1.5V alkaline batteries. Used for Pirouette window shadings that are 18" to 22" in width. One 12V battery wand is the standard power source for PowerView tilt-only systems Parkland wood blinds, Modern Precious Metals aluminum blinds and EverWood alternative wood blinds. 18V 12V Duette and Applause SkyLift systems use 8 AA 1.5V Lithium batteries. Lithium batteries are recommended for SkyLift systems as they typically have a longer life (about 50%) and a stronger resistance to high temperatures. Two 12V battery wands are the standard power source for Duette and Applause SkyLift PowerView shades 31" in width or greater. Battery life is approximately one year, depending on shade type, size and usage. 18V battery wand: 12 AA 1.5V alkaline batteries. Used for most systems. Battery life is approximately one year, depending on shade type, size and usage. SATELLITE BATTERY PACK The satellite battery pack is the standard power source for standard (bracket) style PowerView systems for Designer Roller Shades, Designer Screen Shades, and Alustra Woven Textures roller shades. It is an optional power source for most other PowerView systems. The battery pack connects to the same side of the headrail where the manual control button is located. It is often the best choice when the window treatment is mounted in a high window, restricting access to a battery wand. Replace batteries when the PowerView motor begins to operate slowly. Mounting options: top of headrail, next to molding, under the sill or near the floor. Duette with Vertiglide is the only traversing PowerView system that can use a Satellite battery pack. Satellite battery pack cover can be painted. 18V satellite battery pack (PowerView systems): Available with 15", 4', 10' and 20' cable lengths. 12 AA 1.5V alkaline batteries. Duette and Applause SkyLift systems use 12 AA 1.5V Lithium batteries. All Duette and Applause SkyLift PowerView shades less than 31" wide require the use of factory attached satellite battery pack; specify cable length of 15", 4', 10' or 20'. If ordering a satellite battery pack for Duette or Applause SkyLift PowerView shades equal to or over 31" wide, specify cable length of 10' or 20'. Battery life is approximately one year, depending on shade type, size and usage. 12V satellite battery pack (PowerView tilt-only systems Parkland wood blinds, Modern Precious Metals aluminum blinds and EverWood alternative wood blinds): Available with 15", 4', 10' and 20' cable lengths. 8 AA 1.5V alkaline batteries. C-SIZE SATELLITE BATTERY WAND To give your customers the choice of longer battery life, Hunter Douglas offers an optional C-size satellite battery wand for most PowerView systems. The C-size wand is not available for Applause SkyLift, Duette SkyLift, Luminette Privacy Sheers, Provenance draperies and Skyline Gliding Window Panels. Available with 15", 4', 10' and 20' cable lengths. 10 C 1.5V alkaline batteries. Battery life is approximately three years, depending on shade type, size and usage. C-size satellite battery wand is 21 1 /4" long and 1 1 /4" in diameter. 9 Power Options DC POWER SUPPLY The DC power supply is standard for traversing PowerView systems (except Duette with Vertiglide ) and is an optional power source for all other systems. The DC power supply plugs into any standard household outlet. 18V DC power supply: Available in 15", 4', 10' and 20' cable lengths (4', 10' and 20' only for Duette and Applause SkyLift ). Eliminates the need to change batteries on PowerView systems. 18V DC Power Supply DAISY-CHAIN CABLE (OPTIONAL) Daisy-chaining refers to the method of powering multiple shades from a single power supply. PowerView systems offer a daisy-chain cable that can be used to power up to three standard-sized shades. A daisy-chain cable consists of: One Y adapter. One cable (available in 15", 4', 10' and 20' lengths). Connections The power cable coming from the DC power supply is connected to the in side of the Y adapter, while the power connector from the first shade is plugged directly into one of the out connections. The second cable coming out of the Y adapter plugs into either the power connector of the second shade or, if a third shade is daisy-chained, the in connection of the second Y. Each daisy-chained shade can be operated individually. Final connections are made after the window treatments have been installed. Cables should then be secured and hidden behind the headrails. The maximum total cable length for a daisy-chain system cannot exceed 50'. This length is determined as the sum of the distance from: the outlet where the power supply is plugged into to the first shade, plus the distance from the power connector at the first shade to the power connector of the second shade, plus the distance from the power connector at the second shade to the power connector of the last shade. Requirements One DC power supply is required. One daisy-chain cable for every two shades. Maximum of three shades can be daisychained together, with fabric dimensions not to exceed a combined total area of 100 sq. ft. Available in 15", 4', 10' and 20' lengths. Maximum distance from power supply to final shade connection, combined total length, not to exceed 50'. 10 Power Options LARGE DC POWER SUPPLY For operating multiple PowerView window treatments, the Large DC Power Supply is an excellent solution. It can power up to eight PowerView motors (see note below). Use low voltage wires. Check electrical codes for the correct wire gauge vs. maximum wire distance. Do not daisy-chain shades, when using the Large DC Power Supply. In these instances, each motor counts as an individual draw against the output of the power supply. You will know your window treatment is a Twin configuration, when you receive a Y-adapter power cable with your order. SCREW TO TERMINAL BARREL CONNECTORS Barrel connectors are used to create the custom cables that supply DC power to PowerView motors. Use 14, 16 or 18 AWG low-voltage electrical wire for the custom cable. Custom cables are primarily used to establish a power connection between the Large DC Power Supply s terminal blocks and the shade motor s power cable. The female barrel connector is required to connect the custom cable to the male barrel connector on the motor s power cable. 11 Connection Interface CONNECTION INTERFACE The connection interface allows control of PowerView ization from a dry-contact closure (i.e., relay or switch) normally part of a smart-home automation or lighting system. One connection interface required per window treatment. Mount near motor location. Power does not need to be applied to the connection interface for it to function.
