2 Introduction The SY061 is a portable load meter, which can indicate the load present on any attached cell. details of up to 10 load cells can be stored for each available input. RS232, USB, Bluetooth printer and data logging options are also available. A programmable gain amplifier on the front end allows the instrument to be configured for a wide range of transducers, see section 8. Connections Load cell Load cells are connected using Binder pin locking DIN connectors. The pin connections are: Pin Signal 1 Excitation positive 2 Signal positive 3 Signal negative 4 Excitation negative & TEDS common 7 TEDS data line Wheatstone bridge transducer 5 & 6 Not connected Depending on your requirements, load cells can be fitted with the DIN plugs, or you may find it useful to wire a plug to a terminal block for general-purpose use. Other connector types can be requested at time of ordering. Connections for Wheatstone bridge type transducers, such as most load cells and some pressure sensors are illustrated on the right. USB A sealed USB MiniB type socket is fitted. When the appropriate driver has been installed from the supplied CD, the connection appears to the PC as a standard RS232 port at 115k2 baud Operation When the instrument is switched on the opening screen will show: Interface SY021(c)2012 After about 2 seconds the screen shown depends on whether TEDS has been enabled. If it hasn't, will be shown. Where sssssss indicates the serial number of setup sssssss Ch n channel n.up to 10 setup channels can be configured, numbered 0-9. READY Use the keys to select the required setup channel. To enter measurement mode press the key. To enter configuration mode press the PROG key and go to section Measurement mode The screen will show the setup channel number and the defined serial number on line 1. Line 2 will show the live measurement from the connected transducer. Pressing the TARE key will zero the reading. This will be a temporary tare, if the meter is turned off and measurement mode is re-entered, the measured reading will revert to its previous value. To zero the reading and store the tare value, press the PROG key then the TARE key at the same time. Line 1 of the display will briefly indicate Stored tare. In Peak Hold mode, the TARE key has a different function. As it is held in, the trough (minimum) reading value is displayed. In this mode, the RESET key can be used to clear the peak and trough values. Pressing the key will exit measurement mode back to step 1.0

3 Overview of keypad functions SY061 Load Meter The PROG button is used to switch to configuration mode The TARE button is used in configuration mode to increment digit values. In measurement mode it is used to tare (zero) the reading. The tare will be temporary unless PROG is also pressed. In peak hold mode it can be held in to show the trough (minimum) reading. The RESET button is used in configuration mode to decrement digit values. In measurement mode it can be used with the CHAN button to switch in and out the shunt calibration resistor. In peak hold mode it resets the peak and trough values. The CHAN button is used to enter and exit measurement mode. In configuration mode it is used for digit selection. 2.0 Configuration mode OPTIONS will be shown on line 2 of the display. To configure the options for the selected setup channel, press the key and go to 2.1 If this is not required press PROG to move on to Options 2.11 Peak hold mode Pk hold ON or Pk hold OFF will be shown on line 2. Use the keys to select the required option, then press the key to move on Filter setting Filter n will be shown on line filter options are available offering a balance between speed, noise rejection and resolution. 4 7 10Hz 100msec Hz 10sec Use the keys to select the required option, then press the key to move on TEDS enable TEDS ON or TEDS OFF will be shown on line 2. With TEDS on, the instrument will expect a transducer containing a TEDS device to be connected. When measurement mode is entered, the display will show ' TEDS' on line 1 and ' Looking for' on line 2. Once a suitable TEDS transducer has been connected, line 1 will show the serial number, read from the electronic data sheet. It will also display live readings on line 2, again based on calibration figures read from the data sheet. Use the keys to select the required option, then press the key to move on 2.14 Data Logger Status (if data logger option is fitted) Log Status will be shown. This allows the logger memory usage to be viewed and also for it to be erased. If neither of these options are required, press the key to move on to 2.17 Otherwise press for step 2.15 or for step Data Logger Memory Usage 1234/8191 this indicates how many readings have been stored. In this case 1234 out of a capacity of 8191 readings. press for step 2.16 or for step Clearing the Data Logger Memory Clear memory this allows the memory to be cleared. If not required press for step 2.14 or for step 2.15 To erase the memory press the key IF SURE TARE & RESET will be shown. This is to prevent accidentally erasing the memory. To go ahead and erase the memory press the TARE & RESET keys together. The screen will indicate that the memory is being cleared. This takes about 15sec before returning to step Data Logger Setup Log single or Log streamed will be shown on line 2. For details of the data logging see section 6. Use the keys to select the required option, then press the key exit to step mode PIN ---- To prevent accidental changing of the load calibration a 4 digit pin number should now be entered. The required number is To enter this use the keys to set the first digit to 1. Then press the key to select the next digit. Repeat this process until the display shows 1234 If a mistake is made, pressing the key will cycle through the digits until the required one is selected. 3.1 Setup channel selection of setup n This indicates that calibration adjustments are to be made to setup channel n, where n is a digit between 0 & 9. If n is not the required value use the keys. To make changes to the indicated setup press the key, otherwise press the PROG key and go to step Transducer ID ID nnnnnnn Transducers defined by each of the 10 setups can be allocated a 7 digit number. This could be a serial number, a vessel ID, etc. Use the and keys

5 3.12 Filter setting Filter n This allows for filter selection as in step Units selection Units?? The required units can be selected using the keys to cycle through the options. These are, kg, kn, t, lb, Nm, mm, in, and user defined, see Decimal places Dec Places n The number of decimal places (0-5) of the displayed measurement can be set using the keys method Method Method automatic OR manual Two calibration method options are available. Automatic allows for calibration by either adding a known load or by entering mv/v values. The manual method allows the scaling factor to be viewed and/or adjusted. Select the required method using the keys then press PROG Automatic method Method Method Known load OR mv/v value Two automatic calibration method options are available. Select the required method using the keys then press PROG Known load method Start load kg The initial load on the cells can be entered here using the and keys. The default value is 0 with the decimal places and units as previously set. If the weighing vessel already has a known weight in it, then that value can be entered to remove the inconvenience of emptying it. Finish load kg The finish load, i.e. the load after the test load has been added, can be entered here using the and keys. Add start > 0.0kg With the start load in place press the key. Add finish > nnn.nkg Add the load required to make the finish value then press the key. Continue to step mv/v method Full scale kg The instrument will request the value of the full-scale range to be entered using the previously specified decimal places and units. Use the and keys to enter the value. Full scale mv/v Use the and keys to enter the load cell output at the full scale load. This

6 can usually be found on the load cell calibration sheet. Examples are given in the applications section at the end of this manual. When correct press the PROG key and continue to step Manual method View or Edit SF= The scaling factor can be adjusted using the and keys. This can be useful for fine adjustment of a reading, for example if the measured values are 1% low, the scaling factor could be increased by 1% to as a correction. Another application is to have another setup using the same load cell but with different units. e.g. If the scaling factor of was for setup 0 displaying in kg, setup 1 could be configured to display in lb by entering a scaling factor of ( x 2.2). 3.2 Custom units User unit?? A range of standard unit is available but, if none of these is applicable, a user unit can be defined. It can be any pair of characters from the ASCII character set. Use the keys to scroll through the available symbols. If either of the keys is held in the symbols will continuously scroll. When the first character is correct, press the key and repeat the process for the second character. 3.3 Changing the PIN New PIN? User unit?? The PIN used to enter calibration mode can be changed here. If you don't want to change it press PROG to return to step 1.0, otherwise press the key. New PIN? PIN ---- Use the and keys to enter the new value. NOTE: If this screen is entered accidentally and a change of PIN is not required, turn off the instrument, then turn back on. 4.0 USB Interface commands. When the USB interface is fitted the following commands are available. All start with and the letters can be upper or lower case. Command Description Read Unit ID Model number, Firmware version and serial number. Eg. SY061,V1.00, 1234cr C Clear Log If Logger is fitted; Y if successful, N if unread data if no logger fitted;? Takes about 15sec to clear. D Dump logger If logger fitted; Downloads the logger data in CSV spreadsheet format. If no logger fitted? H Define Header Allows a header of up to 50 characters to be programmed. After *H type the heading, ending with cr. Data downloads will contain the header at the top. Ι TEDS Information If TEDS is enabled and a TEDS device is connected, the data is read, translated into a standard calibration sheet

7 format, and downloaded. If a TEDS device is not connected, or the data is not of a type supported by this instrument, an error message will be reported. If TEDS is not enabled, the message TEDS not enabled is reported. M Logger memory Reports size of data logger memory eg. 064 indicates 64k logger? indicates no logger S Serial number Reports the instrument serial number, eg. 1234cr TC Calibrate clock The built in clock can be speeded up or slowed down to improve accuracy. The range of values is +/- 31. Each positive step increases the clock speed by 4.068ppm, each negative step reduces it by 2.034ppm. TCF will put the clock into frequency test mode and report the current calibration value. To enter a new value send TC+nn or TC-nn where nn is a 2 digit number in the range +/-31 TR Read time Reports the current time & date in the form: YY MM DD hh:mm:ss(cr) TS Set time Set the clock to a new time and date. Enter in the form: TSYYMMDDhhmmss 5.0 Instrument calibration and configuration NOTE: Any changes made in this section only take effect after turning off then back on. For automatic calibration using TEDS or mv/v and full scale values, the instrument uses a calibration factor stored in its non-volatile memory. This is a 3 digit number which is nominally 500 and which can be adjusted up or down, each step equating to a 0.01% change. To access the value enter calibration mode (see 3.0) but enter 0000 as the PIN. The display will then show Trim val --- Pressing will display the current value. Use the and keys to enter the new value. 6.0 Using the Data Logger The data logger stores readings for later download in a.csv spreadsheet format. These can be read by virtually all spreadsheet programmes. Two methods of operation can be selected, streamed or single, see 2.17 for selection details. If single shot is selected, then in measurement mode each press of the PROG key will store the current reading. The record will include a test number, the day of the month, the time and the reading. In streamed mode, pressing the PROG key will start the log which will be indicated by a letter L on the bottom left of the display. Pressing PROG again will stop the logging. In this case the record will include a test number, the time in seconds, to 3 decimal places, of the reading starting at 0, and the reading. This allows a chunk of streamed data in the spreadsheet to be highlighted and a graphical plot of the data to be easily produced. The interval between recorded data depends on the filter setting as follows:

Test 1 was a single shot recorded on the 11 th day at 14:56:53 with a value of 0.043kN. Test 2 was another single shot slightly later at 14:57:06 when the value was kN. Test 3 shows 11 records of streamed data from 0 to 0.16sec in 0.016sec steps. The values hovered around 2N.
