2 SEATTLE IS GROWING FACTS: - Transportation System is under stress - 10 years = 60,000 new residents & 50,000 new jobs - 2/3 of growth will be in urban villages - Growth means changing the way we use our ROW - Smart technology is changing the way we interact with our ROW

6 2015 Staffing Hours: 6am-10pm daily (16x7) on-call after hours (24x7 capable) 4 FT operators + 1 supervisor Lessons Learned: Start small, but think big!

7 Incidents Managed Lessons Learned: Capturing data helps demonstrate the value of our work to public officials.

8 One Incident will Consume a Single Operator Lesson Learned: Attempt to provide double coverage during the peak hours. Use interns to supplement, but not as dedicated operators. 8

13 Expanded Video Sharing Capability Leverage Streaming Media Server Software Share video with users on their iphones, ipads, Androids, and Desktop Computers

14 Expanded Video Sharing Capability Successful Launch of an internal website providing video to every City employee My initial design did not support expansion Lesson Learned Make your solutions scalable

15 Expanded Video Sharing Capability Piloted 10 cameras to the public During a snowstorm, usage went up over 1000% With that data, we were able to design a longterm sustainable architecture

16 Expanded Video Sharing Capability Every traffic camera is now available to the public live Provides a level of transparency alleviating privacy concerns Aids commuters, neighboring agencies, and the local media

17 Providing Predicted Bus Arrivals Solution required to provide transit arrival information at stops Our transit partner was already deploying signs as part of service contract Could we do it ourselves?

18 Providing Predicted Bus Arrivals Predicted arrivals were already available through a service on the Internet Off the shelf signs could receive messages from custom software

19 Providing Predicted Bus Arrivals Message sender software failed due to a memory leak We resolved the issue and plan to duplicate the solution down a number of other corridors Lesson Learned Try to simulate real world conditions during testing

20 Modernizing our System Project to move all of the City s servers from a high-rise to a third party managed data center The primary facility will be in the Greater Puget Sound region A redundant facility will be in Eastern Washington

21 Modernizing our System We initially were resistant to the move We manage our own data-center on the 37 th floor of our building All traffic management servers are hosted there Communication to field begins on hardware installed in that room

22 Modernizing our System Our system is architected with a single point of failure We changed gears, and explained our situation Received support from the project sponsor Sought funding to modernize our system

23 Modernizing our System We received funding to do a full system analysis this year We have money earmarked next year for implementation of those recommendations We ll end with a redundant, secure ITS Network, and backup Operations Center Lesson Learned Take advantage of a massive opportunity even if it means massive change for your system

24 What s Next? Expanded focus on incident response Traffic adaptive in major event corridor and CBD grid going to responsive New approaches to bus and street car operations Continue to align with leadership s vision Transportation for all modes
