1 Information and Communications Technologies Statistical Overview (URL: Information and Communications Technologies Branch Spectrum, Information Technologies and Telecommunications Sector Industry Canada Last Update: April 005 Survey conducted from October 004 to January 005 ICT Sector Capital Expenditures, 005 Intentions Capital expenditures by the ICT sector are expected to increase for a second consecutive year in 005, reaching $11.5 billion. This represents an increase of 4.9% from 004, compared to a growth of 8.4% for all Canadian capital expenditures (excluding housing). The ICT services industries intend to increase their spending on capital expenditures by 4.4% to $9.6 billion in 005. This gain is largely due to an increase of $85 million (+5.4%) in spending intentions by the communications services industries (including telecom and cable/other program distribution). The ISPs, web search portals and data processing services industries also intend to increase their spending in 005 (+6.7%) while the computer systems design industry plans to reduce its capital expenditures (-6.%). Investment by the ICT manufacturing industries is expected to increase significantly in 005, up by.% to $75 million. The largest increases should be observed in the instruments (+0.7%), electronic component (+9.%) and communications equipment (+6.5%) industries. After significant declines in 00 and 004, capital expenditures in the ICT wholesaling, rental and leasing industries are expected to remain stable at $1.16 billion in 005. As a result of substantial reductions in 00 and 00 and slower growth in 005, the ICT sector s share of total Canadian capital expenditures (excluding housing) is expected to decrease to 6.1% in 005, down from 9.7% in 001. With investment intentions of $7.5 billion in 005, the communications services industries still remain by far the largest capital investors within the ICT industries, representing 65% of total ICT sector s capital expenditures.
