13 The Big Picture Mediterranean Opportunity» The region surrounding the Mediterranean Sea is the gateway for Internet traffic streams from the Middle East and Africa to Europe» There currently exist no IXP initiatives with regional/international orientation to speak of in the Mediterranean region» The need to interconnect these traffic streams closer to their destinations (Africa, Persia, Caspian region) has grown tremendously, since content, cloud and gaming providers want to meet eyeball networks in the middle» The top two locations (not yet staffed) where traffic streams are concentrated are:» Marseille» Palermo» DE-CIX will take over the operation of the regional/international IXPs in these locations 13
