3 A brief history of IXPs in Europe - First IXPs appeared at the start of the 1990 s - Initially from academic and research institutes - Commercial IXPs made a real emergence around 2000/ Growth of European IXPs since 1992 Non profit IXP Commercial IXP Total IXPs to 2003 saw the establishment of 42 IXPs End 2007: just over 100 active IXPs across Europe - 65% of IXPs today are of a not-for-profit nature 3

13 Euro-IX: a very brief history RIPE EIX-WG (formed 1998) By end of 2000 some IXPs saw a need to devote more time to IXP operational specific issues May Euro-IX was born (7 IXPs signed up) It worked! The IXPs were mainly not for profit, non competitive, were willing to exchange experiences and work together to solve problems & issues. 13
