4 ISO 50001, Data Centres and CEPI Edition 2: 2018 DEFINITIONS continual (energy performance) improvement - CEPI recurring process which results in enhancement of energy performance and the energy management system Continual improvement achieves improvements in overall energy performance, consistent with the organization's energy policy. energy performance indicator (EnPI) quantitative value or measure of energy performance, as defined by the organization NOTE EnPIs could be expressed as a simple metric, ratio or a more complex model. Examples of EnPIs can include energy consumption per time, energy consumption per unit of production, and multi-variable models. The organization can choose EnPIs that inform the energy performance of their operation and can update the EnPIs when business activities or baselines change that affect the relevance of the EnPI, as applicable. EXAMPLES of CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT The total energy consumption decreases over time Total energy consumption increases but the measure of energy performance as defined by the organization improved Equipment has a predicted reduction in energy performance as it ages. A delay or reduction in the performance reduction curve due to proper operational and maintenance controls can demonstrate improved energy performance as defined by the organizational EnPIs. Uncommon in a data centre environment Impossible to assess work done in any generic sense
5 ISO Certification and CEPI STAGE 2 AUDIT. the certification body shall gather the necessary audit evidence to determine whether or not energy performance improvement has been demonstrated prior to making a certification decision. Confirmation of energy performance improvement is required for granting the initial certification. SURVEILLANCE AUDIT RE-CERTIFICATION AUDIT.. the certification body shall review the necessary audit evidence to determine whether or not continual energy performance improvement has been demonstrated. ANNUAL AFTER THREE YEARS. the certification body shall review the necessary audit evidence to determine whether or not continual energy performance improvement has been demonstrated prior to making a recertification decision. Confirmation of continual energy performance improvement is required for granting the recertification. The recertification audit shall also take into account any major change in facilities, equipment, systems or processes. Energy performance improvement can be affected by changes in facilities, equipment, systems or processes, business changes, or other conditions that result in a change or a need to change the energy baseline.

Each KPI shall be assessed over a defined period of time. All parameters relevant to the assessment of the KPI shall be measured over a period not exceeding a specified time.
