6 National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Act The object of the Act is to introduce a single national reporting framework. Reporting and dissemination of information - GHG emission, greenhouse gas projects, energy consumption and production Establishes a national framework for corporations to report GHG emissions, energy consumption and production from July 01, 2008 The Act makes registration and reporting mandatory for corporations whose energy production, use or Greenhouse Gas emissions meet specified thresholds.

7 National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting Scope 1 Direct GHG emissions occur from sources that are owned and controlled by entity Scope 2 Indirect GHG emissions from the generation of purchased electricity consumed by entity Scope 3 Other indirect GHG emissions (optional) that arise as a consequence of organisations actions but occur from sources not owned or controlled by the organisation. For example, business travel and waste disposal.

10 Green IT ACS defines Green IT as: is the study and practise of using computers and telecommunications in a way which maximises positive environmental benefit and minimises the negative impact. 12 CIO Areas of Focus End client computing Turning off computers after hours has been estimated to save companies in the UK GBP50 per annum Source 2008 the year of Green IT Telstra turn off screen savers in favour of a black screen as part of the $1.2m in savings related to environmental initiatives. ( Improved technology from manufactures reduces power utilisation and improves energy efficiency. Desktop virtualisation is seen as the natural extension of server virtualisation to reduce both capital costs as well as the operational costs.

13 CIO Areas of Focus (Cont) Data Centres In 1996 IT departments spent USD17c in every dollar powering and cooling a new server. In 2006 this has increased to USD48c (Source: Maleshefski 2007) Server consolidation and virtualisation are seen as key initiatives for reducing energy consumption (46% and 40% respectively) (Source Boulton 2008)

14 CIO Areas of Focus ( cont) E-Waste 2007/08 TV s and PC s 16.8 million units reached their end of life, which is close to one unit per Australian. Of these units, it is estimated that 88% were sent to landfill, with only 9% being recycled 3 % exported. (Source Environment Protection and Heritage Council 2009) Research for EPHC shows public willing to pay surcharge of $18-$27 to move from 9% recycling to 50%. (Source Willingness to Pay for E-Waste recycling 2009)

16 Komatsu Initiatives Replacement of End Client fleet: New Dell laptop and Desktop fleet with improved energy efficiency Move to a managed environment based on Vista and Office 07 Remove the ability to install software Remove screen savers Implemented Intel vpro to allow remote shutdown of equipment when not used for 30min between 8pm and 6am All replaced equipment offered to staff on buy as is basis.

17 Komatsu Initiatives ( cont) Data Centre: Server Consolidation Consolidate branch servers and remote solutions to the data centre Server Virtualisation Move from 70 servers to 10 servers 24 SAP servers- Migrate from 4yr old Dell Itanium servers to current HP Itanium servers. Replaced ageing (5yrs) Fujitsu Mainframe with current model, reducing energy & heating requirements. EMC Solution migration (as follows)

Implemented video conference to the desktop: Installed across complete organisation (1200 devices) 190 Microsoft video cameras deployed Deployed 12 Roundtable units through company for conferencing Full presence to the desktop including Windows mobile devices Head Office move to Microsoft UC solution and removal of all handsets and the PABX Head office PABX redeployed to NZ providing country VoIP solution for 6 sites
