A generic model of an ICT-based energy system Overview of the results of the VDE/ITG Position Paper Energy Information Networks and -Systems Dr. Jörg Benze T-Systems Multimedia Solutions GmbH Coordinator of VDE/ITG working group Energy Information Networks and -Systems ETSI Smart Grids Workshop 5-6 April 2011, Sophia Antipolis, France
Introduction VDE/ITG focus group Energy Information Networks and -Systems was founded in 11/2009 Main task is to work on the question, how the energy information networks and -systems will be designed in the future First position paper published in 12/2010 Overview about the work, especially about the generic modell
New Electricity Age Evolution of the Energy System to a Smart Grid 19th Century 20th Century 21th Century Centralized Energy System Decentralized Energy System More large Power Plants Increased efficiency and reliability Enlarged distribution networks and frequency control increase reliability Small generation units lead (again) to a more decentralized system Smart Grid Local electricity systems operated by cities / industry Reference: Siemens
The Energy Information Network Requirements It is necessary to take economic beside technical aspects into consideration. New requirements from the network perspective: High impact on load flows in distribution networks Demands on secundary systems to control the distribution networks Additional data flows through economic incentive systems Demands on the information and communication technology (ICT) Reliability, availability, functional safety, fault tolerance Essential parameters and quantity structure
Energy information networks as basis for an intelligent energy management
Paradigm Shift in the Energy Supply
Paradigm Shift in the Energy Supply
Paradigm Shift in the Energy Supply
Generic Model of an Energy Infomation Network Layer Network-User Services (Virtual World) Entity and Service Communication Infrastructure (Physical World) Telecommunications Energy Supply Automation Domain
Infrastructure Layer (Physical World) Technical equipment, which is necessary for the operation of the energy information network Infrastructure components, that include simple services Examples: Transformer Measuring and setting device Field devices Telephone SetTopBox (IPTV)
Generic Model of an Energy Infomation Network Layer Network-User Services (Virtual World) Entity and Service Communication Infrastructure (Physical World) Node Communication- & Transport Channel Resource Telecommunications Energy Supply Automation
Entity and Service Communication Layer Enables the software access to components of the infrastructure layer by proprietary an standardized interfaces Middleware programming of the infrastructure components access to the data of the infrastructure A first preprocessing of the raw data is possible Examples: Data abstraction models OGEMA-Framework Developergarden (Deutsche Telekom)
Generic Model of an Energy Infomation Network Layer Network-User Services (Virtual World) Entity and Service Communication standardized Middleware proprietary Infrastructure (Physical World) Node Communication- & Transport Channel Resource Telecommunications Energy Supply Automation
Services Layer (Virtual World) Contains various services, virtual objects and virtual structures independent from the underlying physical infrastructure Definition, implementation and operation of any overlay structure on the basis of the service production layer interface Examples: Virtual power plants Market places Tariff models Billing systems
Generic Model of an Energy Infomation Network Layer Network-User Services (Virtual World) Portfolio (Performance Modules) Technical Services Entity and Service Communication standardized Middleware proprietary Infrastructure (Physical World) Node Communication- & Transport Channel Resource Telecommunications Energy Supply Automation
Network-User Layer Subscribers, that use the services and receive or are charged a fee Examples: Private customer Business customer Plant operator
Generic Model of an Energy Infomation Network Layer Network-User Subscriber (Prosumer) Services (Virtual World) Portfolio (Performance Modules) Technical Services Entity and Service Communication standardized Middleware proprietary Infrastructure (Physical World) Node Communication- & Transport Channel Resource Telecommunications Energy Supply Automation
Generic Model of an Energy Infomation Network Telecommunication (exemplary) Layer Network-User Mobile Radio Customer Subscriber (Prosumer) Services (Virtual World) Smartphone with Voice/Data Tariff Network Management Portfolio (Performance Modules) Technical Services Entity and Service Communication standardized Middleware proprietary Infrastructure (Physical World) Telecommunication Energy Supply Automation Node Communication- & Transport Channel Resource
Generic Model of an Energy Infomation Network Layer Energy Supply (exemplary) (do. Automation) Network-User Power Customer Subscriber (Prosumer) Services (Virtual World) Electricity Tariff Frequency Stability Portfolio (Performance Modules) Technical Services Entity and Service Communication standardized Middleware proprietary Infrastructure (Physical World) Telecommunication Energy Supply Automation Node Communication- & Transport Channel Resource
Generic Model of an Energy Infomation Network Smart Meter System Structure (exemplary) Layer Network-User Subscriber (Prosumer) Services (Virtual World) ERP Billing Market Place Portfolio (Performance Modules) Technical Services Entity and Service Communication Meter-Management & Meter-Data-Management standardized Middleware proprietary Infrastructure (Physical World) Meter Node Communication- & Transport Channel Resource Telecommunication Energy Supply Automation
Generic Model of an Energy Infomation Network Web-Services (exemplary) ( Smart Power Grid Services ) Layer Network-User Portal-User Subscriber (Prosumer) Services (Virtual World) Web-Services (SPGS) TC ES Marketplace AT Portfolio (Performance Modules) Technical Services Entity and Service Communication standardized Middleware proprietary Infrastructure (Physical World) Meter Node Communication- & Transport Channel Resource Telecommunication Energy Supply Automation
The Generic Model Advantages Existent technologies are integrable Services are independent from the underlying infrastructure Allows an almost complete modeling of an energy information system at a high abstraction level Useful to describe the interaction of different players recursively or hierachically Open innovation capacity
Conclusion and Further Work The model is not finished yet! Currently it enables a mutual understanding between experts of different branches It is the first step to discribe a reference architecture for a smart grid in one model It is to be understood as a contribution to a interdisciplinary in-depth discussion regarding a reference architecture for a smart gird We intend a joint development process with other experts The long-term goal should be the integration of existing and proven solutions to one interdisciplinary reference architecture for a smart grid
