7 Overview 1. OVERVIEW WSP 6009 explains the steps that need to take place for proper maintenance of fiber optic connectors. This includes the identification of dirty or damaged fiber connectors along with proper cleaning techniques. All of the steps are necessary to build and maintain a quality network. 8 Fiber optic cleaning & inspection: 2. FIBER OPTIC CLEANING & INSPECTION: 2.1. Required Equipment The following equipment is required for proper fiber optic connector cleaning: Power Meter Video Fiber Optic Scope CLETOP Fiber Optic Connector Cleaner Kim-Wipes(dry wipes) 2.2. Fiber Connection Cleaning WARNING: WARNING: WARNING: NOTE: Possibility of eye damage. When cleaning a connector verify that the other end is not connected or the laser on the far end transmitter is off. Failure to do so could cause eye damage when viewing through a fiberscope or looking directly into the connector. Possibility of equipment damage. When a fiber optic cable is not connected to equipment, the dust cover must be installed on the connector. Failure to place the cover on the fiber optic connector could result in damage to the optics and eventual equipment failure. Possibility of equipment damage. Use care not to drop the connector on the floor when pulling the cable to its destination; this could damage the connector. As part of the cleaning process the cable is always inspected in the scope. Immediately after inspecting the connector with the fiberscope, connect the cable to the appropriate optic card/fdp. Failure to do so could result in dirt getting on the fiber connector. ALWAYS REMEMBER THE LAST STEP IN FIBER CONNECTOR CLEANING IS TO INSPECT THE CONNECTOR WITH A VIDEOFIBER SCOPE. Windstream Proprietary and Confidential 2

9 Fiber optic cleaning & inspection: Fiber Inspection For reference, figure 1displays a fiber connector core with an example of a dirty connector and a clean connector. Figure 1 Dirty and Clean Fiber Connector Fiber Connector Cleaning Without Power Meter A. Using CLETOP 1. Remove the dust cover. 2. Clean the connector using the CLETOP cleaner: a. Hold the cleaner in one hand, and using your thumb, push back on the ratcheting lever to expose the cleaner strip. There are two cut-outs that expose the cleaning strip. b. Put the connector tip on the strip and pull the connector down the strip. c. Repeat for the second exposed side. 10 Fiber optic cleaning & inspection: 3. Put the connector in the fiber optic scope. If it is clean continue to step 4. If not repeat step Inspect the connector. It is normal to see a little epoxy coating around the edge of the cable. a. Look at the center of the connector it should be free of fractures. If fractures exist on the connector the cable must be replaced. 5. Remove the connector from the scope and immediately connect to the desired system equipment, i.e. optic card, fiber distribution panel (FDP). B. Using Kim-Wipe 1. Remove the dust cover. 2. Clean the connector using the Kim-wipe: a. The wipe must be placed upon a solid surface in order not to tear the wipe onto the fiber connector. b. Rub fiber tip against wipe vertically about ¼ of an inch swipe usually works Figure 3 Clean Fiber Connector with Kim-Wipe 3. Put the connector in the fiber optic scope. If it is clean continue to step 4. If not repeat step Inspect the connector. It is normal to see a little epoxy coating around the edge of the cable. a. 11 Fiber optic cleaning & inspection: 1. Remove far end fiber connector or turn far end transmitter off. 2. Remove fiber connector dust cover. 3. If using CLETOP, clean the connectors by following the steps outlined in section A Using CLETOP in Fiber Connector Cleaning Without Power Meter. If Using Kim-Wipe, clean the connectors by following the steps outlined in section B Using Kim-Wipe in Fiber Connector Cleaning Without Power Meter. 4. Inspect the cable. It is normal to see a little epoxy around the edges. a. Look at the center of the connector, it should be free of fractures. If fractures exist on the connector the cable must be replaced. 5. Turn laser on far end transmitter or reconnect far end connector. 6. Place the cable in the power meter to obtain readings. 7. Repeat steps 2 and Remove the connector from the Fiberscope and immediately connect to the desired system equipment, i.e. optic card, FDP Cleaning Connectors on Optics Card NOTE: In some case disassembling the card to clean the connectors may void the manufacturers warranty. Validate the card is out of warranty with the Materials Management before attempting to clean fiber connectors on any optics card. 1. Remove the card from the shelf and place it on an ESD mat. 2. Remove the side/front cover, if possible. 3. Clean the connectors by following the steps outlined in section A Using CLETOP or section B Using Kim-Wipe in Fiber Connector Cleaning Without Power Meter. 4. Replace the side/front cover on card. 5. Install the card into the shelf. 6. Clean the jumper connector outlined in section A Using CLETOP or section B Using Kim-Wipe in Fiber Connector Cleaning Without Power Meter. 7. 12 Fiber optic cleaning & inspection: 1. Remove far end fiber connector or turn far end transmitter off. 2. Remove the plastic cover. 3. Remove the connectors from back of the FDP bulkhead. 4. Clean the connectors on the back of the FDP by following the steps outlined in section A Using CLETOP or section B Using Kim-Wipe in Fiber Cable Cleaning Without Power Meter. 5. Connect the jumper back to the bulkhead. 6. Turn laser on far end transmitter or reconnect far end connector. Windstream Proprietary and Confidential 6
