18 Environmental Considerations How Splice GroupÕsf-tubeŖ Fibre Cabling Solution Can Make a Significant Contribution to the Energy Efficiency of Data Centres This paper considers the reduction Splice GroupÕs f-tube system can make to the carbon footprint of a data centre. f-tube is a modular, scalable and highdensity microduct fibre distribution system that amongst its many benefits enables fibre to be better organised and occupies less space in the under-floor plenum. Current literature and modelling studies have been used to model a data centre using the f-tube product and a conventional fibre cabled system. The study shows that the biggest potential saving from using f-tube arises from reduced under-floor blockages and improved airfl ow. Improving airflow helps ensure that the expensively cooled air gets to the right place (i. e. the rack inlets) and that the cooling load is balanced. Additional savings in CO 2 emissions accrue from the lower volume of plastic in a typical f-tube infrastructure set up and from the avoidance of redundant cabling. In total, f-tube would save over 235 metric tonnes of CO 2 per annum in the scenario m odel, or around 0.7% of the cooling load. This annual saving is in addition to a saving of over 200 tonnes relating to the plastic content of the cable. The study had to make a number of assumptions to translate current knowledge on the impact of airflow blockages to savings in CO 2. However, there is little doubt that f-tube will improve airflow and reduce energ y consumption versus traditional cabled solutions. Less energ y consumption means les s CO 2 emissions.
