6 Green Power Purchasing In January 2008, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ranked Cisco the seventh largest Fortune 500 purchaser of renewable energy in the United States. FACTS In FY2007, Cisco purchased more green power than ever before, increasing our overall green power purchases by 229% in FY2006. Cisco s worldwide green power purchases in FY2007 totaled 115 million kwh. Cisco s green power purchases in the U.S. are equivalent to preventing more than 124 million pounds (56,400 metric tons) of carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. Combined with UK initiatives, this represents the prevention of 69,000 metric tons per annum of carbon dioxide. 7 From Carbon to Collaboration Clinton Global Initiative In FY2007, Cisco committed at the Clinton Global Initiative to reducing carbon emissions from corporate air travel by 10% and committed $20 million in collaboration technologies (TelePresence, Unified Communications, and Cisco Shared Workspace). FACTS In FY2007, Cisco successfully decoupled revenue/headcount growth from carbon emission growth and reduced carbon emissions from travel by 10% per employee. This reduction was accomplished through the use of TelePresence and Unified Communications. In FY2007, Cisco installed about 110 TelePresence units in more than 20 countries and almost 60 cities worldwide. In FY2007, Cisco held nearly 25,000 meetings via TelePresence. 8 Reducing Power in Labs/Data Centers Cisco has developed the Automated Managed Power System (AMPS), which identifies equipment that is not in a test cycle and powers it down. FACTS AMPS reduces equipment power use by 40%, representing a substantial savings in both carbon emissions and electricity bills. AMPS is saving approximately $65,000 per month by turning off idle equipment and reducing the load on building airconditioning systems. 11 Energy Efficient Data Center Cisco s Energy Efficient Data Center (EEDC) can increase storage asset utilization up to 70% through virtualization enabling consolidation and decreasing dependence on appliances that support server groups. FACTS Cisco power supplies for its data center products are +90% efficient on AC supply when loaded at 60% or higher. Cisco s service module architecture provides a more efficient solution as compared to conventional appliance-based models. 25 Nurturing a Green Culture Cisco s culture of entrepreneurship, innovation, and collaboration extends into the environmental arena. FACTS Cisco s EcoBoard grew out of the commitment of a small group of employees who formed a cross-functional team, originally known as the Stewardship Council, to address environmental concerns and opportunities. Cisco annually hosts a worldwide environmental awareness campaign. The 2007 event increased employee awareness of environmental challenges and provided an opportunity to participate in global events such as escrap collection, Earth Day, and Bike to Work Day. During our 2007 escrap collection, 16 Cisco sites worldwide collected nearly 200 metric tons of unwanted personal and work-related electronic equipment, a 40-percent increase over FY06.
