Astronomy and Big Data challenge Sandra Jaque, CTO, REUNA
Astronomy 70% of the global telescope facilities will be located in Chile by
Astronomy Currently 75% of the astronomy facilities in Chile are connected by REUNA o 9 of 11 Universities with astronomy discipline members of REUNA consortium othere are plans to connect all the astronomy facilities in Chile to REUNA
REUNA: Evolution of the network 20+ years contributing to the digital development of Chile. 1992, first international connectivity. 1993, backbone of Kbps (256Kbps a 512Kbps). 1997, high capacity backbone 155Mbps over 3000Km. 2000, connection to Internet , founder member of RedCLARA. 2005, connection to RedCLARA by them to EU by ALICE project 2006, increase backbone capacity (~1Gbps). 2011, OTU-2 DWDM backbone over 1200Km. (EVALSO) 2012, metropolitan DWDM network (NLHPC) 2014, ALMA connectivity project
Chile Not only a technological challenge also geographic one Population: ~17 millions Length: 4400Kms (Continental) 3000Kms terrestrial (Arica Puerto Montt) 1400Kms by fiords (Puerto Montt Punta Arenas) Width : 468Kms (max), 90Kms (min), 180Kms (average) Population highly concentrated in the central area
Large Synoptic Survey Telescope The current challenge sky survey each 3 days A camera of 3.2 Gigapixels ( 1.6 m x 3 m) 15 TB per night 40Gbps by Gbps by 2020 REUNA is the partner for the connectivity in Chile
REUNA development in the north Extending layer one infrastructure Deployment: Long haul La Serena Santiago Around 700Kms of fiber La Serena - Observatory Fiber along public road (50Kms) Fiber inside AURA land (30Kms) OTU-4, 100Gbps lambdas Redundancy link over a TELCO lambda Moving forward to a photonic national network Allow to construct an unlimited capacity network for Research and Education.
EVALSO Changed the way the network is procured EVALSO ( ), Enabling Virtual Access to Latin-American Southern Observatories. Co-funded by the EC-FP7 Joint effort of 9 institutions Construction of fiber path in the middle of the desert Wavelength OTU-2 over 1200Kms. IRU at 10 years In operation since 2011
ALMA observatory Biggest observatory ever built (interferometer) International partnership: East Asia, Europe and North America 20 countries involved 66 antennas: 54 of 12 mts diameter dishes, and 12 of 7 mt. each. Arrays: 50 x 12 m or 12 x 7 or 4 x 12 Located in Atacama Desert
ALMA Connectivity Extending the physical infrastructure further north Network: 120Kms of new fiber, from the observatory to Calama OTU-2, IRU by 10 years from Calama to Antofagasta Connects to REUNA backbone in Antofagasta Backup link through Argentina in the future In test
NLHPC: National Lab for HPC HPC for Big Data science Consortium of Universities, research centers, observatories and REUNA HPC available for the whole Chilean research community A DWDM metropolitan network (Santiago) OTU-2 and OTU-1 Lambdas Currently six DWDM nodes A central cluster of 50 teraflops Plus HPC clusters in 5 universities
REUNA in the international framework REUNA is connected to RedCLARA and Amlight
Building Europe Link to Latin America Synergies with national network infrastructure In the frame of REUNA s strategic plan The path to the north (Peru) Synergies with Astronomy facilities
T. Austral T. Arica Puerto Montt Geographical challenge Seeking to connect all the R&E institutions The research is made along all the country At the southern regions there is also! education and research Aysen CEQUA INACH The government announce there will be a new University in Aysen region
Fibra Optica Austral Governmental project to connect the southern region Currently this region is reach by Satellite or terrestrial by Argentina The project aim to: Reach with fiber from Puerto Montt to Puerto Williams Mix of submarine cable with terrestrial fiber (3.000 Km) To strengthen the telecommunications service for the community in synergy with network infrastructure for the public sector
Platform for the research and education Moving forward to integrate the whole national R&E system 20 Universities 10 Research centers, 50% of them are astronomy centers Extension to 12 of 15 national regions Integrated to the global network by RedCLARA to Geant, Internet2, etc.
P1 Network projects To a national photonic network GP P2 P3 GP: National Photonic network P1: Arica - La Serena, in synergy with astronomy community and BELLA project P2: DWDM network La Serena Santiago (LSST) P3: Santiago Concepcion. Short time: upgrade in capacity. Long term fiber or lambdas P4: Synergy with Fibra Optica Austral project Joining pieces with a coherent strategy P4
Building in synergy Development in collaboration with the whole R&E system + others n x 100 Gbps Mbps Universities 1 to 10 Gbps Universities Research Centers Observatories To reach all the research and education system along the country
