The map included shows a number of streets with fiber running down them. One of them is Henry Street (the San Jose side). Is this part of the plan or a mistake? The map of fiber routes provided by Google in their Project Description Master Plan (being reviewed by Council at the Study Session) is not the actual detailed construction project submittal. According to Google Fiber representatives, this map is intended to show, at a high level for illustrative purposes, the intent to essentially place fiber in all parts of the city's neighborhoods and some commercial areas as well. Google's stated intent is to get general approval by the city and other regulating bodies before investing in the detail it takes to submit permit applications. Also, Google intends to build FTTP in San Jose as well. If Santa Clara and San Jose are on different sides of a street, they say it would be covered. An infrastructure project like this does not stop at city boundaries; it just changes the jurisdiction to which they apply for permits. 2. As a resident on that street (and not a Santa Clara resident), will I or any other resident that is on one of these streets (there are others) be able to sign up for Goole Fiber? Google's plan is to sign up as many customers in any of the five bay area cities it is currently studying: Santa Clara, San Jose, Sunnyvale, Mountain View and Palo Alto. I see no reason why you and your street would not be included in this opportunity. 3. There are some mature trees on many streets with roots that go way into the ground. Particularly, where would the trenching take place? Trees will most certainly be a concern for any underground work. As I understand it, trenching would generally occur in the street away from the gutter. Once a detailed plan is submitted for an Encroachment Permit, the request for a permit will be scrutinized by several internal reviewers; one of the reviewing stakeholders is our city arborist. Which method for undergrounding in which streets is still not detailed, however, Google Fiber and city teams have met to discuss our general parameters for permit approval. If Google Fiber's request for undergrounding does not meet city parameters, they will not be issued a permit. We are optimistic, but cautious on all accounts. 4. Trenching around these trees could kill the main root and kill the tree. How will this be avoided? I will have to have our arborist or Public Works contact you to answer this question in more detail. For now, your concern has been registered and we will work to address it in more detail. 5. What is the time line for a project like this? Is it broken into phases? 7 Google has stated that it would like to start in February or March and be finished in all five cities within 36 months. Yes, that is remarkably fast. They plan to have multiple crews working across the region at the same time. I have not ever heard that they plan to break the construction into discernable phases. To be clear, Google has not affirmatively decided to move forward with construction. They still have some administrative hurdles and CEQA to get through before committing. I and others are excited about seeing Goole Fiber come to the area, but we just want see if we can also be a part of the deployment.
