5 Chapter 1 Introduction The idea of virtualization has been around for many years. It was first used back in the 60's as a way to partition large mainframe hardware. Engineers back then faced the same problems of today, such as too many underutilized servers. IBM pioneered virtualization by allowing engineers to partition mainframes to allow tasks to multitask. Server virtualization on the x86 platform was invented in the 90's primarily by VMware. Since then many companies have entered into the x86 hardware and software virtualization market including Microsoft, Citrix and more recently Sun with virtual box and Solaris zones. Sun also has been experimenting with hardware virtualization on their SPARC platform. The need to virtualize is ever growing due to the growing demand and shrinking availability of data centre space. The term virtualization broadly describes the separation of a resource or request for a service from the underlying physical delivery of that service. This blend of virtualization technologies - or virtual infrastructure - provides a layer of abstraction between computing, storage and networking hardware, and the applications running on it (see Figure 1.1 and Fiure1.2). The deployment of virtual infrastructure is non-disruptive, since the user experiences are largely unchanged. However, virtual infrastructure gives administrators the advantage of managing pooled resources across the enterprise, allowing IT managers to be more responsive to dynamic organizational needs and to better leverage infrastructure investment. In layman s terms virtualization is often: 1. The creation of many virtual resources from one physical resource. 2. The creation of one virtual resource from one or more physical resource 5 P a g e

Running multiple applications on same machine often creates conflict. Inflexible and costly infrastructure Hardware-independence of operating system and applications. Virtual machines can be provisioned to any system. Can manage OS and application as a single unit by encapsulating them into virtual machines. 6 P a g e

7 1.1 Types of Virtualization Today the term virtualization is widely applied to a number of concepts including: Server Virtualization Hardware Virtualization Full Virtualization Para Virtualization In most of these cases, either virtualizing one physical resource into many virtual resources or turning many physical resources into one virtual resource is occurring. Now, brief description of types of virtualization described above: 1. Server Virtualization Server virtualization is the most active segment of the virtualization industry featuring established companies such as VMware, Microsoft. With server virtualization one physical machine is divided into many virtual servers. At the core of such virtualization is the concept of a hypervisor. A hypervisor is a thin software layer that intercepts operating system calls to hardware. Hypervisors typically provide a virtualized CPU and memory for the guests running on top of them. 2. Hardware Virtualization Hardware virtualization refers to the creation of a virtual machine that acts like a real computer with an operating system. Software executed on these virtual machines is separated from the underlying hardware resources. For example, a computer that is running Microsoft Windows may host a virtual machine that looks like a computer with the Linux operating system; Ubuntu-based software can be run on the virtual machine. In hardware virtualization, the host machine is the actual machine on which the virtualization takes place, and the guest machine is the virtual machine. The software or firmware that creates a virtual machine on the host hardware is called a hypervisor or Virtual Machine Manager. 3. Full Virtualization Full virtualization is a virtualization technique used to provide a certain kind of virtual machine environment, namely, one that is a complete simulation of the underlying hardware. Full virtualization requires that every salient feature of the hardware be reflected into one of several virtual machines. In such an environment, any software capable of execution on the raw hardware can be run in the virtual machine and, in particular, any operating systems. The obvious test of virtualization is whether an operating system intended for stand-alone use can successfully run inside a virtual machine. 7 P a g e

8 4. Para Virtualization Para virtualization presents a software interface to virtual machines that is similar but not identical to that of the underlying hardware. The intent of the modified interface is to reduce the portion of the guest's execution time spent performing operations which are substantially more difficult to run in a virtual environment compared to a non-virtualized environment. A successful paravirtualized platform may allow the virtual machine monitor to be simpler (by relocating execution of critical tasks from the virtual domain to the host domain). 1.2 Benefits of Virtualization: There are many benefits of Virtualization. Some of the benefits are: 1. Less heat build-up Virtualization virtualized your servers and uses less physical hardware. It also uses less physical hardware and generates less heat in data center and a host of issues go away. 2. Reduced Cost Hardware is costly in the data center. It reduces the amount of hardware used and also reduces the cost. But the cost goes well beyond that of hardware lack of downtime, easier maintenance, less electricity used. 3. Easier backups The person can take backups of virtual server by taking snapshots of virtual machines. These virtual machines can be moved from one server to another and can be redeployed easier and faster. The snapshots can be taken throughout the day, ensuring much more up-to-date data and firing up a snapshot is even faster than booting a typical server. 4. Better disaster recovery Disaster recovery is quite a bit easier when the data center is virtualized. With up-to-date snapshots of virtual machines, the person can get back up very easily. The virtual machines can move anywhere. Because of flexibility means the disaster recovery plan will be easier to enact and will have a much higher success rate. 8 P a g e

9 Chapter 2 Project Description The project entitled Virtualization Assessment Toolkit has been designed for the cost/benefit analysis of post virtualized environment. Virtualization is a revolutionary technology which possesses great power and features and provides dramatic cost reduction for any organization. This not only enables large organization to save money but also reduces maintenance efforts. In this work, our aim is to calculate ROI and TCO of organizations in Virtualized environment. Following factors have been taken into consideration while calculating the ROI and TCO of organization. 1. Savings on server power and cooling 2. Savings on server configuration 3. Cost computation of server consolidation hardware 4. Cost Computation of Storage 5. Virtualization product license cost 6. Service and Training Cost 7. Server provisioning cost 8. Cost Saving on maintenance events Each point contains different sub-factors that include the capital expenditure (at the start of first year). It is assumed that in every five years, the systems are decommissioned. The calculator follows a simple methodology by considering the software acquisition and support costs for a server virtualization solution. Our target group is BFSI sector who are currently deploying Server Virtualization in their respective data centers. After evaluating the cost benefit, organizations can compute the impact of virtualization on the business. 2.1 Related Tools of Virtualization The Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit of Virtualization The MAP Toolkit 3.1 (see Figure 2.1) is a network-wide infrastructure assessment tool designed to help quickly gain a baseline understanding of your servers and desktops, including whether they are ready for upgrade or migration to technologies such as Hyper-V, Microsoft Application Virtualization, Windows Server 2008, Windows Vista, Office 2007, and SQL Server. 9 P a g e

10 Figure2.1 The Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit of Virtualization VMware Cost per calculation calculator The VMware Cost-Per-Application Calculator compares the cost of virtualizing applications on VMware vsphere 5.1 versus other commodity virtualization offerings (Figure 2.2). The calculator provides an accurate and simple methodology to determine the cost of virtualization by including both software and hardware infrastructure costs and accounting for the number of applications that a virtualization platform can run on each server. 10 P a g e

12 Chapter 3 Virtualization Assessment toolkit: Description In the virtualization assessment toolkit, there are 8 factors which have been taken into consideration for calculating the ROI and TCO of organization. 1. Savings on server power and cooling 2. Savings on server configuration 3. Cost computation of server consolidation hardware 4. Cost Computation of Storage 5. Virtualization product license cost 6. Service and Training Cost 7. Server provisioning cost 8. Cost Saving on maintenance events Each point contains sub-factors that include the capital expenditure. The calculator follows a simple methodology for calculating different factors. The sub factors which the toolkit is asking is same for virtualization and unvirtualization. Depending on the calculation, it will tell whether the virtualization is better or unvirtualization. Now, the sub factors of above parameters will be described in brief. In each parameter, the sub factors of that parameter are taking the values for Year1, Year2, Year3, Year4, and Year5 and then at last there is button named Total. By clicking on that various mathematical calculations will be done. The parameters of the above factors are being described in the following table: In the table these are the abbreviations used: 1. 13 3.1 Savings on server power and cooling Following are the parameters of Unvirtualized Environment and for Virtualized Environment being described in Table 1 Table 1: Savings on server power and cooling Sr. No Sub- Factors Description Calculation 1. Power Rate (per kwatt hour) Power cooling and power operating will be more in U, So its power rate will also be more in U. 5. Power & Cooling Expense Power and Cooling expense will be more in U as power operating and cooling rate is more in U. So, the cost will also be more in U. Power cooling will be sum of the values in year1, year2, year3, year4, year5. Power Rate will be average of year 1, year 2, year 3, year 4, year 5. Power and Cooling expense will be sum of the values in year 1, year 2, year 3, year 4, year 5. 15 3.3 Cost Computation of Server Consolidation Hardware Following are the parameters which are being taken under assumptions which are shown in Table 4. 18 5. Direct Attached Storage (DAS) 6. San/NAS shared storage Digital storage system directly attached to a server or workstation, without a storage network between them. Shared storage of San/Nas. Number of DAS in Year 5 will be the final DAS. Number of San/NAS shared storage in Year 5 will be the final DAS. 7. Cost Expenditure (C) Money wasted in purchasing the San/NAS shared storage which is being damaged. Total cost will be sum of the values in year1, year2, year3, year4, year5. Let the total of this be C. 8. Total Cost Expenditure Include the parameters- San/NAS shared storage, Number of FC SAN HBA and Number of FC SAN Switches In this it will add up the values of San/NAS shared storage, Number of FC SAN HBA and Number of FC SAN Switches of year1, year2, year3, year4, year5, total and hence it will be A+B+C for Unvitualization and Virtualization. 22 Chapter 4 Implementation details 4.1 Implementation Environment Details The toolkit is being implemented using web- design tools. The tools are Php JavaScript phpmyadmin Html5 CSS5 4.2 Implementation Procedure There are various steps in the toolkit. Below there are steps how to proceed. Step 1 Page Name: register.php The user first creates his account on the toolkit by registering. The user has to give Company name, First Name, Last Name, , Password, Re- enter Password. Buttons in the page o Register: After filling the information the User click on register button to create his account. Links in the page o Log In: By clicking on Log In, User will go to login page. 22 P a g e

36 Chapter 5 Result and Conclusion Virtualization technology can provide dramatic benefits to nearly all aspects of an organization. The uses and benefits of virtualization are so varied and numerous, they are impossible to ignore. IT managers, web hosts, data center administrators, even home users, all stand to benefit from one or more of the available virtualization technologies. Virtualization Assessment toolkit measures different parameters and finally calculates the total saving s and Return on Investment (ROI) and payback over 3 years and 5 years for postvirtualized environment. The Calculator is not meant to be the end-all be-all cost analysis or to show cost estimates exact to the last digit. Our target group is BFSI sector who are currently deploying Server Virtualization in their respective data centers.
