1 Finnish ICT Strategies for the Construction and Real Estate Cluster How does the Finnish government promote the OO implementation? Why is there a need for integration of object modelling into the whole of the design and construction, process? 6 11 Key Elements in Creating Technology Programmes The target is defined in wide collaboration with the industry and academia Pre-marketing immediate commitment and shared vision Loose framework - only few key projects might be defined in the beginning Flexibility in project selection Industry driven Most project proposals come from the industry No funding for research institutes or universities without industry funding Industry funding is a feasibility study By courtesy of Roger Flanagan
7 Identified Key Technologies Competitiveness and renewal of existing industrial sectors Creation and growth of new sectors Sustainable development, future energy solutions Information and Communication Technology Biotechnology Production Technology and Processes Material Technology Business Know-how of the New Economy 13 Construction and Wood Technology Cluster 14 Environment Information and Communication Technology Well-being Real Estate Logistics Construction Building Services Forest Industry Timber and wood products Building Materials and Components Infrastructures Services Transportation Machinery Energy Tekes mission: R&D must become a constant part of the normal business also in the AEC/FM industry Change in the basic philosophy: We must move from minimizing the costs to maximizing the added value

14 27 Does IFC address the problems? Lack of data/information in usable format: IFC data can easily be used by downstream applications Lack of up-to-date data/information: IFC data makes it easier to frequently exchange data Requires partial model exchange to be efficient Lack of consistent data/information: Model based IFC data is more consistent than separate, partly overlapping paper drawings or 2D data Part of the responsibility is functionalities of applications Lack of systematic change management and versioning procedures: IFC can provide slots for version and change management information Requires additionally version management procedures Requires also application support and systematic working procedures IFC capabilities and usage Usage Paper & 2D data exchange Product model data exchange Demonstrations Piloting Production Capabilities Now 28 Kari Karstila/Eurostep

A combination of core-model with more detailed task specific sub-models is needed (like IFC+CIMsteel). Partial communication between different models is needed
