Multiple factors are driving organizations to focus on energy and the environment Laws, Regulations, Standards Governmental regulations and laws designed to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases, protect natural resources and limit further damage are increasing. Opportunities and Challenges Companies are developing greener products, technologies and services to capture emerging market opportunities while balancing environmental impact. Stakeholder Expectations From investors to market analysts, from employees to consumers and NGOs, the demand for consideration of environmental and economic consequences of activities is growing. Costs and Availability Companies face rising costs and uncertain availability of energy, waste disposal, water and raw materials and physical asset risks due to climate change/ global warming.
Information technology can contribute to improve energy efficiency The Bad News: IT accounts for 2% of global CO 2 emissions and expected to grow to 3% by 2020 The Good News: IT can significantly contribute to control and reduce the 98% of CO 2 emissions caused by other activities and industries you can t make a product greener, whether it s a car, a refrigerator or a traffic system, without making it smarter smarter materials, smarter software or smarter design. Thomas L. Friedman Source: The Green Road Less Traveled by Thomas L. Friedman, The New York Times, July 15, 2007, The McKInsey Quarterly, How IT Can Cut Carbon Emissions, October 2008
IT and property infrastructure drive energy utilization On average, 40% of energy use and emissions come from building heating and cooling US commercial electrical costs increased by 10% from Within the last five years, the total amount of energy utilized by all domestic US data centers has doubled. Data centers have doubled their energy use in the past five years. Insufficient Cooling and Insufficient Power are key datacenter issues Data Center IT Resources Utilization IT Load Processor 55% 45% 70% 30% 80% 20% Idle Power and Cooling Power supply, memory, fans, drives W data center X W equiv IT power x3 5 W equiv processor x5 Used +1 W equiv. used ressource
Organizations stand to benefit from a holistic approach People Reduce travel, real-estate and office costs without impact to productivity. Foster innovation. Information Reduce data growth while optimizing data retention and compliance readiness. Product Reduce the environmental impact across the product life cycle and address market needs with greener products Strategy Align the corporate social responsibility strategy and overall business strategy IT Visualize and control energy costs using efficient technology to lower cost and improve overall sustainability goals Property Maintain, track, deploy, locate and manage the environmental impact of physical assets Business Operations Reduce cost of operations and environmental impact while optimizing business processes
So... How can Software make you greener? Reduce business travel and commuting Enable multi-site software development Compress and deduplicate your data Reduce risks and costs associated with environmental regulatory compliance requirements Monitor, report and manage resources to reduce consumed energy Deliver intelligent, greener, products Dynamically manage virtualized systems to optimize utilization and energy consumption Optimize HVAC for hot spots Optimize business processes Schedule workload to off-peak hours Optimize applications Reduce use of paper
Lets focus on 3 Key Areas for today
Lotus can help increase your global impact without impacting the global climate Going Green Web Content Management
The Green value of collaboration: People Need Reduce travel and facilities costs while improving productivity, fostering innovation, and attracting and retaining top talent Approach Leverage collaboration capabilities to enable remote work Utilize Web conferencing for meetings and events Deploy social software and interactive portals to build community and ease information gathering Value Revealed Eliminate the inefficiency of remote work. Celina Insurance saves over $3 million annually through streamlined interaction with independent agents. Reduce travel and associated costs. Hillman Group saved $70k on one training event by avoiding travel. Reduce facilities costs. Collaboration at IBM saves $100 million annually in real estate costs.
The Green value of collaboration: Information Need Reduce the cost and inefficiency associated with data growth Approach Value Revealed Reduce storage and systems to manage data One large company found that by upgrading to Version 8.5 of Lotus N/D they could reduce servers by almost 75% and see almost a 50% reduction in storage Deploy collaboration technologies that reduce data footprint Leverage document sharing capabilities that eliminate information redundancy Use electronic forms to streamline paper-based processes
The Green value of collaboration: Business Operations Need Value Revealed Eliminate the cost and waste associated with business process inefficiencies. Approach Use electronic forms to automate paper-based processes Deploy Web portals to enable self service for greater efficiency Track business energy use through dashboards Reduce the cost of paper-based processes. US Army saved $1.3 Billion in processing costs. Reduce cost of service. EIM Controls captured significant savings by automating product configuration and quotation. Monitor environmental impact for improvement. C-Lock Technology measures carbon emissions across industries.
New Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5 for Green Collaboration The Ultimate Green Collaboration Platform Lotus Notes Lotus Domino Green customers Green IT Server Consolidation Less hardware requires less energy. Lotus Domino 8.5 supports increasing numbers of users per server. Since release 6.5, Lotus Domino has reduced CPU and I/O usage by 50%! Data Compression Reduces disk storage, network traffic, backup costs, and the physical space required for increasing data generation. Domino data compression feature savings typically range from 20 50%! Compatibility with existing hardware Compatibility with existing infrastructures avoids the need for new hardware manufacture, and less landfill. This avoids rip and replace for a true environmentally friendly infrastructure. Domino provides customers the ability to choose their hardware and OS platform based on needs such as: physical footprint, energy consumption, storage space, etc.
Lotus Notes and Domino 8. 5 Green Savings An example of savings resulting from Lotus Domino 8.5 With new capabilities in Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5 software, customers will typically be able to further reduce the amount of servers and disks required to process and store data. Number of servers Equivalent disk space used (Gb) Disk space savings Mail users per CPU Server savings Mail quota Domino , Domino 8.5 1, , In this example, up to 20% fewer machines are needed, and up to 20% less disk space is used for equivalent data between Domino 6.5 and Domino 8.5. Customer environments vary greatly, but a conservative estimate of improvements from Lotus Domino 6.5 to Lotus Domino 8.5 for 8,500 users is dramatic, with room for further mail users! *This example is for an 8,500 user company, with a set of clustered mail servers
IBM as a Case Study 42% of IBM s employees do not regularly come into an office saving $100M annually in real estate costs In the US: 8 million gallons of fuel conserved and more than 61,600 metric tons of CO2 emissions avoided in one year by enabling mobile workers with collaboration tools Last year IBM saved $97M in travel costs by using Web conferencing instead $16.5 million saved per year in reduced phone costs from use of instant messaging In Austria, Germany, and Switzerland: $2.8 million reduced annual energy expenditures by enabling mobile workers with collaboration tools Costs are down customer satisfaction is up people are more productive
IBM wins Frost & Sullivan 2008 Green Excellence Award September 17, 2008 Awarded for developing a vision and a strategy for creating environment-friendly software products and solutions that help reduce carbon footprint and save energy IBM demonstrates a commitment to developing and marketing a greener portfolio of products and services that will help its customers accomplish a number of goals including becoming more cost-efficient, more eco-friendly and even more competitive. IBM not only talks the talk but also walks the walk by implementing a number of green initiatives in its internal operations. - Frost & Sullivan, 2008
Customers are starting to evaluate the green credentials of suppliers and products The rising cost of energy is impacting the bottom line Tighter restrictions are being placed on energy consumption
