HOW TO SEARCH DIFFERENT KINDS OF MIMOSA-TYPE CD-ROMS BY USING SYNONYMS In the previous issue of PAJ News, we presented a way to conduct the search for many PAJ CD-ROMs speedily and effectively, by copying those CD-ROMs onto a large-capacity hard disk. In this issue, we will further introduce how to search not only PAJ CD-ROMs but different kinds of MIMOSA-type CD-ROMs at the same time, by using Synonyms function in MimoBatch. MIMOSA s search keys (criteria) differ from databases to datatases, depending on the issuer s domestic legal systems and languages they are based on. For instance, the criterion for the abstract in PAJ is AB, whereas in ESPACE World it is abbreviated as ABE (English abstract) and ABF (French abstract). This will be a problem when you try to conduct a search for different kinds of CD-ROMs simultaneously in MimoBatch after copying them onto a hard disk. You can solve this trouble by using Synonyms function; i.e. MimoBatch will identify different criteria as defined by the function. Synonyms will make possible any search query for various kinds of MIMOSA-type CD-ROMs issued by different organizations, like USPTO and EPO. We will now explain from the next page how to make use of Synonyms function, by picking up PAJ and ESPACE World for the explanation purposes. 1

2 PAJ and ESPACE World use different criteria. For example, when you choose ESPACE World and designate AB as a criterion PAJ ESPACE World An error message will show up. In this case, you can set the system to search two databases at the same time using the Synonyms function. Unknown criteria Click on Options Product Preferences Product settings, then select Synonyms. 2

3 Search terms for ESPACE World will be displayed. Select ABE. (English Abstract) A box in which a new synonym is to be entered will be created. Enter AB (Abstract) as a new synonym. When you once again conduct the same search AB is now recognized as ABE. 3

4 Some Remarks about Synonyms 1. The Synonyms can be set while using MIMOSA software. This is because MimoBatch, a subprocess of MIMOSA, continues to work in the same environment as MIMOSA. Please note that if you define synonyms for MIMOSA, the settings will be equally effective for both MIMOSA and MimoBatch. 2. The setting of the Synonyms is stored in the computer in which the MIMOSA program has been installed. The setting is valid only for the personal computer on which it is made. When you use this function while using a LAN, it is necessary to set the same function for each personal computer which MIMOSA disks data are stored in. You may want to set this function whenever you use new types of CD-ROMs. 3. The setting of Synonyms will be stored according to the types of CD-ROMs. Each of the setting of the Synonyms function is to be stored in a Collect folder (See below) within the folder in which MIMOSA Disks data are stored ( EPO folder) according to the type of CD-ROM (PAJ, ESPACE World, etc.). 4. If you are going to use PAJ, please note that there are two types of PAJ CD-ROMs, one for data before the year of 2000 and the other for data on and after This is due to the format change of Japanese publication number, i.e. from eight-digit number (using the Japanese calendar to indicate publication year) to ten-digit number (using western style year indication). When you use PAJ together with MIMOSA-type disks other than PAJ, you need to set the Synonyms for each type of PAJ. 5. It would be convenient to define Synonyms according to the items of CD-ROMs that you would frequently use. For example, if you frequently use PAJ, set AB as a synonym of ABE in ESPACE World. Vice versa when you search ESPACE World more often. 6. Each setting of Synonyms is effective only for the computer where it is defined. However, you can use the same setting by copying the Collect folder you created in a computer into other terminals. Make sure that you quit MIMOSA and MimoBatch before copying. In addition, it is recommended to make a backup copy of the settings. Take a look at Collect folder ABE = AB Open the file MIMOSA World.txt 4

HOW TO SHARE DIFFERENT DATABASES BY CONNECTING TERMINALS VIA THE LAN In PAJ News No. 24, we introduced a high-speed automated search of many CD-ROMs by realizing jukebox function on a large-capacity hard disk. However, it is still not efficient to enter the same data into each computer when you conduct a search using several terminals. It takes a great deal of time and a large capacity hard disk to duplicate all of the data of the CD-ROMs. To avoid this, if you use several computers, it may be effective to search the data after copying MIMOSA-type disks onto a hard disk with access to it via LAN. The LAN allows you to access the hard disk of each networked computer. The LAN access will enable you to search the data stored in other networked hard disks and, consequently, to utilize a larger capacity of hard disk. It is easy to share the data stored in each computer, as the data in MIMOSA-type CD-ROMs are composed of ordinary Windows-type files. In this case, 100BASE-T Ethernet will suffice for your LAN facilities. For the file sharing and LAN access, please refer to the instruction manual or Help messages of your OS. PAJ CD-ROM Install ESPACE World CD-ROM Install Hub Connect the terminals in which CD-ROM data is stored with other terminals by using a hub Other terminals in which CD-ROM data is not installed 6

7 How to share the data stored in a terminal with other computers Other computers will be allowed to access a hard disk by setting its system as follows. 1. Select the folder where the data s been installed 2. Click Sharing 3. A window for sharing a drive will be displayed. 7
