Nearly every day, a disaster strikes somewhere in the world

Businesses are affected data is lost, operations are disrupted

Is your company prepared, everywhere?

Can you quickly restore lost data and systems in another location?

Higher levels of resilience is needed as data increases More business online More applications and data Increasing cost of inmation unavailability

A gap exists between the increasing cost of data availability and the ability to deliver and recover through traditional methods More business online More applications and data Increasing cost of inmation unavailability Ability to deliver availability through traditional methods The widening gap More complex systems More data to restore Requires continuous inmation availability BY DESIGN

The impact to a business can be enormous. Downtime ranges from 300 1,200 hours per year, depending on industry 1 In some industries, downtime costs can equal up to 16 percent of revenue 1 For 32 percent of organizations, just four hours of downtime could be severely damaging 2 30 percent of all businesses that have a major fire go out of business within a year. 70 percent fail within five years. (Home Office Computing Magazine) 60 percent of companies that lose their data will shut down within 6 months of the disaster. 50 percent of businesses that found themselves without data management 10 days or more due to a disaster filed bankruptcy immediately. (National Archives & Records Administration in Washington) 1 Infonetics Research, The Costs of Enterprise Downtime: North American Vertical Markets 2005, Rob Dearborn and others, January Continuity Central, Business Continuity Unwrapped, 2006,

Basic Situation Remote Data is Big and Growing There are more than 4 million remote/branch offices in the U.S. alone, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Many of these offices belong to multinational companies based in other countries. The amount of data in remote offices is increasing with the overall growth in electronic inmation and the requirements longer data retention periods However, the percentage of total corporate data in remote offices is increasing as companies expand operations into new markets and attempt to move closer to their customers, suppliers and partners Result: large enterprises have between 35% and 65% of their data in remote/branch offices (per Gartner, IDC, ESG, Taneja Group, et.al.)

Remote Office Data may not be Well-Protected Most remote offices do not have the IT resources and processes in place to provide data center class protection and recovery their digital inmation Backups are permed by non-it personnel that have other jobs; they often get to run the backup, or they do it wrong. If it doesn t get backed up, it can t be restored

Tape-Based Backup has its Issues Tape-based systems rely on manual processes that introduce significant risks to data protection and recovery Labeling, loading, unloading, storage, transport, etc. Physically moving tapes off-site disaster recovery also opens the door to data security risks Tapes get lost/stolen on a regular basis Recovering lost data from tape is a painful and often impossible task Usually requires expert IT support, which is costly and time-consuming

IBM has the Answer With the introduction of IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack, IBM has the only comprehensive, cost-effective solution protecting and quickly recovering remote office data and maintaining remote operations, following almost any type of data loss: Lost or deleted file or folder Virus attack or corrupted database Disk or server crash Local or regional disaster TSM FastBack integrates easily into central data protection systems such as IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, easily adding remote data to core processes such as archive, retention and compliance Other vendors have to cobble point solutions together to provide the scope of services that IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack provides

Solving the Data Recovery Problem What can go wrong? Office staff gets to run the backup, or does it wrong Accidental or malicious deletion of critical files You discover that a critical database has been corrupted (maybe by a virus) the past couple of weeks Current response Pray nothing fails until the next night (or whenever the next backup gets run successfully) Call tape vendor s support desk and have them walk you through loading the right sequence of tapes, and hope you don t over-write any of today s data Good luck; you re going to need to fly in an expert, and you ll be down days Response with Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Automated, non-disruptive backup occurs during normal business hours in the background Open the FastBack Restore browser and drag & drop the needed files back to where you need them Pick the point-in-time that you want to recover from and initiate a Virtual Restore operation; the entire database will be made available within seconds

Solving the Data Recovery Problem What can go wrong? Your boss has lost an important contact or message in his Microsoft Outlook and needs it now The disk in your SQL Server crashes The office is hit by a <insert your favorite disaster here> Current response Tell the boss it can t be done, and start looking another job Tell customers to wait a few hours or days while you try to restore from tape Restart operations from scratch whenever you can get into a (new) facility; suffer lost customers, revenue Response with Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack Initiate FastBack Microsoft Exchange and drag-and-drop whatever e- mail objects you need or send them to a new mailbox Virtual Restore will have you up and running within seconds of putting a new disk on-line Use FastBack Bare Machine Recovery to reconstitute the office s workload in another location, within an hour
