2 Abstract An increasing amount of data is being created outside of traditional data centers. At the same time, the value and availability requirements for this data are also increasing. Managing this distributed data using manual processes and older technologies is both costly and creates a potentially devastating risk of loss or theft of sensitive information. 5 Distributed Data is a Big and Growing Problem There are more than 4 million remote/branch offices in the U.S. According to the U.S. Census Bureau Many of these offices belong to multi-national companies based in other countries The amount of data in remote offices is increasing Overall growth in electronic information Requirements for longer data retention periods The percentage of total corporate data in remote offices is increasing Companies expand operations into new markets Moving closer to their customers, suppliers and partners Result: Between 35% and 65% of data is in remote/branch offices Per Gartner, IDC, ESG, Taneja Group, Aberdeen Group 4
