3 Presentation Abstracts Presentation #1: Dan Luksetich (DanL Database Consulting) Time Travel Queries and Temporal Data Storage - What you need to know! Abstract: Temporal tables and time travel queries are a very popular feature of DB2 10 for z/os and DB2 10 for LUW. They are one of the most powerful automated database features to come out in some time. This session will go into depth about the things you need to understand and prepare for before using temporal tables. This will include proper table, index, and table space design and configuration, as well as the ongoing management of these objects. In addition, we will be going into depth about how exactly time travel queries work, the complexity with period specifications, and the performance implications. Presentation #2: Dan Luksetich (DanL Database Consulting) Understanding Query Transformation in DB2 for z/os Abstract: There is always a lot of talk about the DB2 optimizer and what is the best access path for a particular query. While this is of course important it is also important to know that the optimizer is only part of the story. When a query is submitted one of the first things that happen is that it goes through query transformation. In this part of the process DB2 interprets the submitted SQL and rewrites it. Views and UDFs are merged with the query, subqueries possibly transformed to joins, table expressions merged and much more. If you are a serious query tuner you need to understand what is happening during query transformation and what you can do to influence it. We'll learn about query transformation, how to view query transformation and how to influence query transformation. Presentation #3: Mike Wingfield (Compuware) DB2 Performance & Tuning (it s all about the SQL!) Abstract: Mainframe Application Performance Management is more imperative today with processor speeds approaching the 7 GHz limit. Throwing hardware at performance issues is not enough anymore. Application response times and runtimes need to be tuned to run as efficiently as possible and often times when it s DB2 in the application, most of the performance opportunities will be found there. Various CICS, Batch, and DDF DB2 Version 10 tuning opportunities will be examined, and analyzing SQL text, DB2 access paths and the DB2 catalog objects are involved. What on mainframe applications are using CPU and causing wait? 3 August 2015

4 Analyzing online and DDF SQL for optimal response times Investigating DB2 batch jobs to reduce overall runtimes Exploring access path efficiency by examining the Explain Scrutinizing information contained in the DB2 catalog Presentation #4: Mike McCarthy () Data Lake or Data Swamp? An Introduction to the Data Reservoir Alternative Abstract: As new software options to manage data of all types have emerged in recent years, vendors and industry analysts have coined new terms to describe the landscape. Data lake, data swamp, data reservoir, and logical data warehouse: what's it all about? In a mini-presentation for MDUG, you will learn about the latest concepts and architecture around data warehouse and analytics for the enterprise. Speaker Biographies Dan Luksetich (DanL Database Consulting) Dan Luksetich is a data scientist and senior DB2 DBA consultant. He works as a DBA, application architect, presenter, author and teacher. 7 Membership and Fees. Inquiries on the status of corporate/company memberships should be sent to the MDUG box at Invoices for 2015 will be sent to members of record for 2014 in early If you or your company were not a member in 2014, and you need an invoice for 2015, MDUG at admin@mdug.org, and one will be ed to you. 5. Fees for 2015 Fees for 2015 are posted on the MDUG web site ( If pay by check or cash: Individual - $ 140 Group - $ 540 Vendor - $ 640 Meeting - $ Group Support Volunteers are the heart of any non-profit group. This is especially true for MDUG. Without volunteers to handle the affairs of the group, the group wouldn t exist. Group membership fees only provide enough income to cover the costs for holding the seminars, and others things such as the web site and the PO Box, which are required for the group s operation. There isn t enough income to pay someone to find speakers, pay bills, coordinate activities, etc. As always MDUG needs more volunteers to keep operating. Volunteering is a good way to find out more about the group operations and expand your skills. If you can volunteer to support the group s activities next year, please let us know. Many of the support activities can be done from your home or desk and many do not take more then a few hours a month. Even MDUG Board meetings can be done from your desk, as all meetings are held via telecom and usually not more than once a month. And supporting the group allows you to attend the seminars at no cost. A few of the areas where you could help out are: supporting the web site, taking reservations, suggesting topics/speakers, management of the group s, group coordination, providing onsite support at the seminar, handling evaluations, and speaker introductions. We hope you will talk to one of the red ribbon wearers at the seminar about how you can volunteer or send an with your contact information to admin@mdug.org asking where you can help out or just that you want to discuss volunteering with someone on the board. We will get back to you. Please volunteer to help by talking to any board member, contacting MDUG at admin@mdug.org. If you are a DB2 practitioner, MDUG needs you and your ideas and enthusiasm." 7 August 2015

8 7. Finances (Coming Soon): A new feature on the MDUG web site, will soon be the status on the group finances. Look for it under Finances on the side bar. 8. Group s Future Current board members will mentor new board members on procedures and tasks. For most of the roles/functions, the time commitment is not large. A few group members have helped lead the group over the past decade. Some will be moving on to new endeavors or are no longer involved with DB2. So, if you want MDUG to continue to offer local training and seminars, please volunteer now. Roles Speaker coordinator, Facilities coordinator, Newsletter editor, Website editor, Membership database administrator, Onsite support, management, Treasurer, President Without new volunteers DB2 seminars could be a thing of the past, unless one of the vendors takes over the operation of the seminars. If you can t volunteer, are you willing to pay more to keep MDUG functioning. Let us know on the evaluation or by your responding to this note with an to admin@mdug.org. 9. Recent and Future Training Based on interest, MDUG will consider future training in the coming year. If you re interested in attending such training or just want more information, please send an to training@mdug.org. Additionally if there continues to be enough interest in training in the future, MDUG will consider holding a yearly one day training class. Look for questions on future newsletters and evaluations, so you can let us know if you are interested in future training, or if upcoming training is planned. 8 August 2015
