3 What is Text? Words and symbos in any form, spoken or written, are the most common means of communication. Texts in the form of words, sentences and paragraphs is used to communicate thoughts, ideas and facts in neary every aspect of our ives. Text is a vita eement of mutimedia menus, navigation systems, and content.

7 Importance of Text in a Mutimedia Presentation Factors affecting egibiity of text: Size. The size of the text Background and foreground coor. The coor in which the text is written in / on.

8 Importance of Text in a Mutimedia Presentation Stye. Aso known as typeface and font Leading. refers to the amount of added space between ines of type. Originay, when type was set by hand for printing presses, printers paced sugs strips of ead of various thicknesses between ines of type to add space.

12 A typeface is a famiy of graphic characters that usuay incudes many type sizes and styes. A typeface contains a series of fonts. For instance, Aria, Aria Back Aria Narrow and Aria Unicode MS are actuay 4 fonts under the same famiy.

15 Font Styes The technoogy of font effects in bringing viewer s attention to content: Case: UPPER and ower cased etter Bod, Itaic, Underine, superscript or subscript Embossed or Shadow Coours Strike-through

16 Font Sizes Font size is measured in points. Character metrics are the genera measurements appied to individua characters. Kerning is the spacing between character pairs Leading is the space between ines.

18 Cases A capitaized etter is referred to as 'uppercase', whie a sma etter is referred to as 'owercase.' Pacing an uppercase etter in the midde of a word is referred to as intercap.

19 Serif Versus Sans Serif Serif Serif is the itte decoration at the end of a etter stroke. Serif fonts are used for body text. San Serif Sans serif fonts do not have a serif at the end of a etter stroke. These fonts are used for headines and bod statements.

21 Using Text Eements in a Mutimedia Presentation The text eements used in mutimedia are: Menus for navigation. Interactive buttons. Fieds for reading. HTML documents. Symbos and icons.

22 Menus for Navigation A user navigates through content using a menu. A simpe menu consists of a text ist of topics.

23 Interactive Buttons A button is a cickabe object that executes a command when activated. Users can create their own buttons from bitmaps and graphics. The design and abeing of the buttons shoud be treated as an industria art project.

24 Fieds for Reading Reading a hard copy is easier and faster than reading from the computer screen. A document can be printed in one of two orientations - portrait or andscape.

26 HTML Documents HTML stands for Hypertext Markup Language. It is the standard document format used for Web pages. HTML documents are marked using tags.

27 An advanced form of HTML is DHTML. DHTML stands for Dynamic Hypertext Markup Language. DHTML uses Cascading Stye Sheets (CSS).

28 Some of the commony used tags are: The <B> tag for making text bod faced. The <OL> tag for creating an ordered ist. The <IMG> tag for inserting images.

29 Symbos and Icons Symbos are concentrated text in the form of stand-aone graphic constructs. They are used to convey meaningfu messages. Symbos used to convey human emotions are caed emoticons.

30 Text Eements in Mutimedia Presentation Anti-aiased text must be used when a gente and bended ook a tites and headines is needed. Ideas and concepts can be highighted by making the text bod or by emphasizing text. A peasant ook can be created by experimenting with different font faces, sizes, eadings, and kerning.

33 PostScript PostScript is a method of describing an image in terms of mathematica constructs. PostScript characters are scaabe and can be drawn much faster. The two types of PostScript fonts are Type 3 and

34 TrueType Appe and Microsoft deveoped the TrueType methodoogy. TrueType is a system of scaabe outine fonts, and can draw characters at ow resoution.

35 Character Sets The American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) is a 8-bit coding system. The extended character set is commony fied with ANSI standard characters. The ISO-Latin-1 character set is used whie programming the text of HTML pages.

36 Unicode is a 16-bit architecture for mutiingua text and character encoding. The shared symbos of each character set are unified into coections of symbos caed scripts.

37 Character Sets Mapping across patforms: Fonts and characters are not cross-patform compatibe. They must be mapped to the other machine using font substitution.

41 Mutimedia Mutimedia is defined as the combination of text, graphics, and audio eements into a singe presentation. When the user assumes contro over the presentation, it is caed interactive mutimedia. Interactive mutimedia becomes hypermedia when a structure of inked eements is provided to the user for navigation and interaction.

42 Hypertext System Hypertext is defined as the organized crossinking of words, images, and other Web eements. A system in which words are keyed or indexed to other words is referred to as a hypertext system. A hypertext system enabes the user to navigate through text in a non-inear way.
