Introduction The LCD video controer subassemby is an in-monitor design buit around a high performance ASIC technoogy that enabes the dispay of anaog VGA signas on a fat pane LCD dispay. The LCD video board provides a the eectronics necessary to drive a TFT fat pane dispay from VGA (640x480) up to SXGA (1280x1024) sources. It features a muti-interface LCD video controer board that supports TTL, LVDS and TMDS protoco-based fat pane dispays. The controer incudes auto resoution adjustment and versatie On-Screen-Dispay controer adjustment. There are three basic functiona items within the LCD video controer: the video receiver circuit, the LCD driver circuit, and the inverter. How the LCD Video Controer connects to the LCD screen Inverter LCD Screen LCD Video Controer OSD Interface Board 12V Power Source LCD Interface: TTL, LVDS, FPD-Link Anaog VGA input source from VGA card A computer s video interface produces an anaog video signa. Since LCD monitors require a digita signa, a video receiver circuit is required to convert the anaog video signa into a digita video format that is accepted by the LCD monitor s driver circuit. 3 Subassemby Product Guide LCD Video Controer Once the anaog signa has been converted to a digita format, the digita signa is passed to the LCD driver circuit. This converts the digita video signa into the raw row and coumn information that actuay turns pixes on and off on the dispay. The ight source for most fat pane dispays is a cod cathode fuorescent backight. These backights run on high AC votage provided by an inverter that converts the suppied DC power to AC and steps its votage up for start-up. Once the backight is started, the inverter drops the votage down to its operating eve. Safety Precautions Before you configure and assembe the controer board for your fat pane dispay, it is important to become famiiar with the board ayout and aso foow certain basic safety precautions. Identifying the Components Take a moment to famiiarize yoursef with the board ayout, mounting point ocations, jumpers and connectors. Main Board The main board consists of the ASIC chip, firmware IC, support eectronics and interface connectors. ˆ ƒ * Make sure that at no time you are working on any eectrica or eectronic components whie any part of the system is energized. Aways disconnect the power! Use caution to protect the deicate eectronic components. Ground your sef during the instaation of the motherboard and other components. 1. 4 Subassemby Product Guide LCD Video Controer Main Board ASIC Features The LCD video controer consists of a revoutionary scaing engine, capabe of expanding any source resoution to a highy uniform and sharp image, and criticay proven integrated 8 bit tripe-adc and patented Rapid-Lock digita cock recovery system. This rich feature set yieds an extremey suitabe match between the controer and high end XGA and SXGA appications. Integrated 135 MHz Tripe ADC. Fexibe resoution support without frame buffer, from ow resoution VGA and NEC98 modes up to 1280 x 1024 at 75 Hz. A coor depths up to 24 bits per pixe are supported. Best of Cass Scaing Engine - The scaing engine agorithm is optimized to match TFT LCDs optica dispay response to provide uniform intensity across the entire image. Text font carity and sharpness is enhanced by re-scaing convover. Mutipe Video Format Input Support. Seria Digita Receivers - Seria digita receivers such as TMDS, LVDS or GVIF configured in either 1 pixe per cock or 2 pixes per cock connect directy to the controer chip to create a DFP, Pug and Dispay or DISM compatibe monitor. Two Anaog Connector Inputs - Two separate sets of anaog RGB inputs are internay mutipexed. This aows the monitor to seect RGB anaog signas from two PCs. Digita TV - CCIR601 input from a digita TV decoder. Using the interna YUV-to-RGB conversion circuit and expansion circuit, the de-interaced image is dispayed on a progressive-scan TFT LCD. Integrated High Speed Digita Cock Recovery - Soid and competey stabe ocking to the source pixe cock is achieved in worst case test patterns. - A cocks required are generated from a singe 50 MHz reference osciator. Integrated RAM based OSD Controer - Customer defined fonts as we as standard fonts are supported in a fuy featured integrated OSD controer. Compete ook and fee and a famiiar user interface can be maintained. Automatic ADC Samping Phase Optimization - Performs measurements so that firmware can automaticay optimize the ADC samping phase. Optimized Pane Cock - Pane cock frequency is optimized to support each mode at the owest possibe frequency x 1024 x 75Hz is supported without driving the pane cock at 135 Mhz. - Pane cock pad drive strength and cock to data skew are programmabe to reduce EMI in the pane interface cabe. TFT LCD Pane Support - A pane resoutions and sizes are supported up to SXGA - Pane interface supports one or two pixe per cock, Sync ony, DE ony and Sync/DE composite. Four Wire Interface to Microcontroer Simpe 4 wire seria interface connects directy to monitor microcontroer. Can be expanded to 7 wires by increasing data width from 1 to 4. 5 Subassemby Product Guide LCD Video Controer LVDS Transmitter The subassemby comes with a LVDS (Low Votage Differentia Signaing) transmitter subsystem in the form of a puggabe daughter board. It consists of LVDS transmitter ICs that convert CMOS/TTL data into LVDS data stream. Backight Inverter The subassemby comes with an inverter subsystem that converts the suppied DC power to high AC votage for the LCD backight. 1. DC input. 2. OSD Push Button Board The OSD menus and parameters are accessed by 4 push buttons sodered on a separate PCB. You pug the PCB cabe connector to socket 4 on the main board. 6 Subassemby Product Guide LCD Video Controer Configuring Your Controer Whie your LCD controer is designed to drive a wide range of TFT LCD panes, many aspects of the ASIC chip s pane interface are programmabe through a microcontroer with buit-in EEPROM. Check with the suppier of your controer to find a recommended LCD pane. LCD with TTL Interface Refer to the iustration beow to configure your controer board for a LCD that accepts TTL data source. LCD with LVDS Receiver Interface When you use the controer subassemby with a LVDS protoco-based LCD, you must first insta the daughter board. It consists of LVDS transmitter ICs that convert CMOS/ TTL data into LVDS data stream. Instaing the LVDS Daughter Board Step 1. Aign the daughter board connectors to the main board header connector pins and firmy push them together. ƒ 1. Pug in suppied cabes to the TTL output connectors. 2. Pug in the OSD board. 3. 7 Subassemby Product Guide LCD Video Controer Step 2. Connect the fat pane LVDS cabe to the 20-pin header connector (pin 2 is pugged preventing incorrect orientation). OSD Contros The LCD controer incudes an integrated RAM-based OSD controer. Through four front pane contros you can view adjustabe features of the LCD through the On-Screen Dispay. 8 Subassemby Product Guide LCD Video Controer Foow these steps to activate the on-screen dispay and make any adjustments to suit your preference: Step 1. Power up the system. Step 2. Press MENU to invoke the on-screen menu. Step 3. Press SEL to step through the main options. Step 4. Press either + or - button to bring up sub-menus of the highighted option. Step 5. Press SEL to step through the sub-menu options. Step 6. Press either + or - to modify the seected parameter vaue. Pressing a button once increases or decreases the numerica vaue by a singe digit. Hoding down a button increases the rate of change. Press MENU to return to the previous screen. Step 7. After you ve made your adjustments press MENU repeatedy unti the OSD is turned off. V.POSITION: Adjusts the vertica image position within the dispay area of the LCD. AUTO PHASE: Performs automatic adjustment of the ADC sampe pixe cock. DELAY: Manua adjustment of the sampe pixe cock phase. 3. CONTRAST MENU AUTO-BALANCE: Performs automatic adjustment of coor brightness in reation to the background. CONTRAST: Manua adjustment of individua RGB channe contrast. 4. LANGUAGE MENU Seects Engish or Spanish anguage OSD. 5. RESET Reoads a parameters to factory settings. 6. SAVE Saves current parameters. Adjusting the OSD Parameters The OSD consists of a main menu and sub-menus with the foowing seections: 1. RGB MENU BRIGHTNESS: Adjusts the back eve of the Red, Green and Bue channes. COLOR TEMP: The settings are avaiabe to set white point reference. SHARPNESS: Adjusts image sharpness. 2. GEOMETRY MENU AUTO-ADJUSTMENT: Performs automatic adjustment of the vertica and horizonta image positions within the dispay area of the LCD.
