2019 Graduate Scholars Symposium Poster Guidelines Create your poster using Microsoft PowerPoint, using a single slide. You must resize your slide (see page 2) according to the guidelines below. Software: Microsoft PowerPoint Poster Size: 1 panel of 43 x 35 inches Poster must include: Poster Title: Font size 100 Presenter and/or Advisor Name: Arial 60+ (for student presentations, the advisor s name is required on the poster) UCM Logo: easily identifiable Headings: 90+ bold Subheadings: 70+ bold Text: Text on the poster should not be less than 36 point font. Font: Use Times New Roman or Arial. Only use one font throughout the poster. Do not use any special effects like shadowing of fonts. It is recommended to use bold, underline, and italics when appropriate. Be cautious of symbols that are not numerical (math symbols or Greek) as they may not translate computers (from PC to Mac) or software versions. Background: Should NOT be all white or black in coloration. You can use a photo and adjust how opaque it is and use it as a background. You will want contrast with text color so your text is readable. Try to use complimentary colors together. Be careful of backgrounds that transition from lighter to darker areas as the font will be difficult to see in one area of the poster. Use of Appropriate Pictures/Graphics: You must use the official UCM Logo. You may add Departmental or other partnership logos. You can insert jpegs, bmp, etc. You can include photographs you take, or create your own images. Logos can be found at You may need to obtain copyright from authors of pictures you find on the internet, which can take time to acquire. If something is copyrighted you CANNOT use it without documented permission. Documentation must occur at the bottom of the photo used. A great source for photos is flickr, See below for details. Tables, pictures, graphs, and charts make your poster visually appealing. You can have the gridlines appear on the slide so you can position your text boxes and photos. Citations: Be consistent. Citations are done according to MLA, APA, or CSE (biology, etc.) guidelines. People enjoy informative, colorful, visually appealing and stimulating posters! Page 1 of 5
Creating your Poster using Microsoft PowerPoint Open PowerPoint software: 1. Start a Blank presentation. Under the Design tab, click the down arrow for Slide Size and select Custom Slide Size 2. For the Slides sized for: drop down select Custom. Adjust the width to 43 inches and the height to 35 inches. After selecting OK, choose Maximize. 3. Start adding content to the slide. Under the Insert tab, text boxes, pictures, etc. can be added. Page 2 of 5
Using Flickr to find Photos 1. Use keywords to search for images. In the top left corner of the search results, change the Any License setting to All Creative Commons. 2. Use the Advanced Setting (top right corner) to select what orientation your photo needs to be. Since most posters will be 35 inches tall by 43 inches wide. Filter your results to show only photos that are similar in orientation. 3. Select the photo you would like to use. Under the photo, click on the Some Rights Reserved link. Here you will find what the photo s owner expects if you use their photo. Many ask that you give them photo credit. 4. Next, download the photo in the largest size possible. Page 3 of 5
Inserting a Background: Choose a photo that best fits your topic. We recommend using high resolution photos taken during your research. If this is no applicable, services such a Flickr can be used. 1. Save your photo to your computer. DO NOT copy and paste your photo or use one from the web. These will not be large enough and may become distorted when resizing. 2. Under the Insert tab, use the Shapes drop down to select a rectangle. Click and drag to draw the shape. 3. Use the Format tab to resize the drawing. 4. Under the Format tab, select Shape Fill, then Picture. Browse for the photo you would like to use. Page 4 of 5
5. To change the transparency of your photo, right click on the photo and select, Format Picture. Under Fill & Line (paint bucket), use the Fill menu to change the transparency. Page 5 of 5
