2 Association of Power Producers of Ontario Graphic Standards Guide CONTENT AND PURPOSE OF THIS GUIDE This Standards Guide is for anyone within APPrO who is involved in the creation of graphic communications for the Association on any level. These communications include any piece, electronic or printed, that displays the Association logo or name. To ensure that all communications pieces send a consistent message, the Standards Guide details the correct use of the APPrO logo, and the quality of typography and image that appear together with the logo which as a whole make up the graphic identity. Consistency conveys a unity of purpose and will inspire confidence among staff, volunteers, members, the general public, and other organizations. APPrO STANDARDS GUIDE 2

3 Our New Identity EQUITY AND SYMBOLISM As of the fall of 2003, IPPSO is changing its name to APPrO. The new APPrO logo reflects the continuity of purpose of the original organization as well as the anticipated growth in scope of the Association. The logo symbol shows a letter A constructed from sine waves, which can be used to represent three-phase AC electrical power. The merged sine waves represent the symbiosis of the various facets of our Association, and the resulting shape is a dynamic representation of power distribution. Brand equity with the IPPSO logo can be seen in the way the line work repeats and intensifies. APPrO STANDARDS GUIDE 3

4 The Basic Graphic Rules COLOUR OF THE LOGO When budgets permit, the logo should be reproduced in the official colour: APPrO Green, which is Pantone 348 (also known as PMS 348 ). If no special Pantone colours are possible, the CMYK ( 4-colour ) version of PMS 348 can be used. That CMYK or 4-colour mix is: 100% cyan, 15% magenta, 90% yellow, 0% black. 2-COLOUR LOGO On a white background, use the 2-colour logo (Pantone or CMYK versions, depending on print production,) or a black logo. On a light background, use a black logo. On a photographic or non-appro-green background, use a black logo if the photo or colour is light, or a white EPS logo if the photo or colour is dark. BLACK LOGO On a background that is too dark for the green or black logo to show up, use the white EPS logo. Avoid putting the logo over busy graphic or photographic backgrounds. 5 Colour ** COLOUR PALETTE The official APPrO colour palette consists of PMS 348 and black. Below are the colour breakdowns for those colours and some complementary colours which can be used for other design elements used in APPrO communications. COLOUR CONSISTENCY Remember that colour cannot be expected to be consistent between visual environments. The quality of light in a room, the experience of a press operator, and the type of computer screen are just a few examples of the variables that pose significant challenges to colour identity consistency for all organizations, regardless of size or communications budget. The best tactic is to be consistent in the Association s colour choices for each environment % BLACK A 1 2 C RGB: 255/255/255 2 PMS 348 ON UNCOATED PAPER RGB: 0/102/51 CMYK: 100% CYAN, 15% MAGENTA, 90% YELLOW A RGB: 110/162/128 CMYK: 57% C, 17% M, 43% Y B B RGB: 127/187/207 CMYK: 50% C, 10% M, 5% Y C RGB: 168/218/114 CMYK: 34% C, 56% Y ** IMPORTANT NOTE This Standards Guide description of colour cannot be printed in accurate or consistent colour on colour office printers. 6 The Basic Graphic Rules MINIMUM SIZE Logo size restrictions ensure that the logo is always clearly legible. The logo shown at the right is 1 from top to bottom, and is the minimum size at which the logo should ever appear. MINIMUM CLEAR SPACE AROUND LOGO The logo should have a safety zone around it that is clear of other graphics. 7 The Basic Graphic Rules WAYS THE LOGO SHOULD NOT BE USED Too small. The logo should not appear at a size smaller than 1 in height. Do not add black outline to logo. Use approved colours only. Do not change the relationship between the logo elements. Do not change logo proportions. Do not attempt to recreate (type in) elements of the logo. APPrO ASSOCIATION OF POWER PRODUCERS OF ONTARIO Avoid non-appro coloured papers and backgrounds whenever possible. Use the correct black logo file to avoid the green areas of the logo printing as a screen, or gray. APPrO STANDARDS GUIDE 7

8 The Basic Graphic Rules WAYS THE LOGO SHOULD BE USED Use the official 2-colour logo whenever it is possible to do so, on a white background. The symbol and small logotype print in Pantone 348, and the larger logotype is printed in black. 2-COLOUR LOGO A white logo can be used on dark backgrounds, preferably on black or on the official green. 9 The Basic Graphic Rules ALTERNATE WAYS THE LOGO CAN BE USED In scenarios where the vertical logo does not fit, an alternate logo with a horizontal lockup can be used. (Lockup refers to the space relationship between graphic elements, in this case between type and symbol). In some marketing scenarios where space allows, the secondary logotype can appear separately from the symbol and APPrO so long as all elements can be seen prominently. 10 Official APPrO Fonts CONTENT AND PURPOSE OF THIS GUIDE The two official Association fonts are Futura and Caslon. Futura is a sans-serif font ideal for headlines, sub-headlines and bold signage. Caslon is used for body text. Text should be set flush-left, including headlines. In this guide, headlines are Futura 22 point type, upper and lower case. Sub-headlines are bold, 9pt. all caps. Spacing between letters has been increased for the headline and subhead styling. Body text is 11pt. Caslon, with 17pt. leading, and 8.5pt between paragraphs. Futura 22pt FUTURA BOLD 9PT CAPS Caslon 11pt FOR EVERYDAY USE ON OFFICE PC Caslon is unlikely to be available on office PC computer unless specially purchased. Futura is a font already owned by the Association, but may not always be available. For everyday use, Arial is a sans serif font that is an acceptable substitute for Futura, used for headlines, sub-headlines, and presentation text. Futura should be used whenever possible, however. Times Roman is an acceptable substitute for Caslon and is a serif font to be used for when type is set in paragraphs. When you need to create emphasis, use Times in italic, but not bold. 11 APPrO Letterhead OFFSET PRINTED AND TEMPLATE FILE The Association letterhead is intended to be 2-colour in its offset printed version. A Word template file is available that prints the logo and address information in all black on an office laser printer. 12 Graphic Identity WHAT GOES INTO IDENTITY The Association graphic identity is made up of a consistent use of a combination of graphic elements: the logo, a unique type style, colour use, and image selection. These elements all come together on the samples shown below: a sketch for a possible trade show booth, and a PowerPoint presentation template. Notice the sine wave graphic used in the background on this page. This graphic is available as a file for use on communications. 13 Logo File Formats WHAT THE FILE NAMES MEAN APPrO_348.eps The file names are broken down with the first part indicating what graphic is in the file, the second part indicates the type of colour file, and the three letter segment following the period indicates what kind of format the file is in. Following is a breakdown of each of those parts. APPrO complete standard APPrO logo. APPrOalt APPrO alternate lockup logo. Stype small Association logotype only. Ltype large APPrO logotype only (non-standard). Stype1LN small logotype in 1-line format (non-standard). symbol logo mark only (non-standard). 348 Pantone format file, in APPrO PMS 348. BK Black. W White (not possible in all file formats). CMYK for 4-colour applications. EPS Vector format files when opened in Adobe Illustrator, and can be resized without losing data. Superior quality. Use this format whenever possible. GIF Most commonly used for web. Low resolution. JPEG Most commonly used in Office applications. Medium quality, lossy format -- loses data as it is resaved. It can be scaled down in size, but not up. 200dpi. Not for press. TIFF Sometimes requested as alternate to EPS, however not as high quality. It can be scaled down in size, but not up. 200dpi. 14 What s on the Logo CD THE NON_STANDARD FOLDER This folder contains file formats requested which are outside of the scope of the Standards Guide, and which should be used only internally, and with great care. It is always better to use the signature in it s whole form, rather than its pieces, as it gets difficult to regulate consistency the more elements you are working with. APPrO STANDARDS GUIDE 14
