1 HOW TO READ AN E-BOOK FROM PROQUEST EBOOK CENTRAL The digital platform ProQuest Ebook Central offers three ways of accessing the contents of its books: Reading the book online. Downloading the entire book. Downloading a limited number of pages in PDF format. In the first case, simply click on the button to read online. In the second case, you will have to register free on the platform and install Adobe Digital Editions, which will enable you to view the books you have downloaded. In the third case, you can only download a limited number of pages per session. In this manual, you will find instructions for: 1. Downloading the e-book (Windows / Mac / Linux) Appendix: Linux users (Wine) Downloading the document in PDF

2 1. Downloading the e-book To access the e-books that you will find in each course's Materials section, you must follow these steps: 1. Access the corresponding classroom and click on the Resources section. 2. The section's contents will open, distributed in tabs. Click on each tab to see its content. Our example is located in the Information Sources section. It is a book in EPUB format. 2

3 3. If you click on it, a new window will open with the book in question: 4. Click on the Full Download tab: 3

4 5. A new window appears to create an account for downloading. The account only needs to be created once. For subsequent downloads, you can use Sign In. 6. Fill in the fields with your data. Use the address and password assigned to you for the UOC Campus. 4

5 7. Once the account has been created, the title page you have searched for is shown again. If you click on Full Download, the following window will appear, asking about the device you are using. Click on the appropriate option and press Continue. 8. The following window appears; click on the Get Adobe Digital Editions button. At this point in the process, Ubuntu Linux users would have to read section 1.1 Appendix: Ubuntu Linux users: How to download Wine to complete the installation. 5

6 9. This takes you to the Adobe Digital Editions website. It is possible that the following window could be displayed, in which case you will click on the option Go to the Spanish website. 10. Click on the appropriate option (MAC or Windows), depending on the operating system you use. You must follow these instructions: Click on the Install button Open the executable file and click on the Run button Answer Yes to confirm installation of Adobe Digital Editions Accept the licence terms and click on Next Check all the Adobe Digital Editions options and click on Next Select the path where you want to install Adobe Digital Editions and click on Install. 6

7 11. Installation of Adobe Digital Editions will begin and the downloading process will be displayed. When the software has been fully downloaded, click on Close. At this stage of the installation, you will have to authorize your device with the Adobe Digital Editions identification. This identification is obligatory and you will only need to do it once. It is necessary for downloading the books you have requested. 12. Adobe Digital Editions will boot and will ask you to authorize your device with your Adobe Digital Editions ID. If you do not have the ID yet, follow these instructions: Click on the Create Adobe ID button and fill in the form. 7

8 When you have created your Adobe ID account, enter the data and confirm your device's authorization. Click on End to start working with Adobe Digital Editions. The following window will open: Press Step Completed. You can now use Adobe Digital Editions to download the book. An.ACSM file will download onto your device. You will now be able to open the file with Adobe Digital Editions, which you have installed earlier. 8

9 1.1. APPENDIX: LINUX USERS (WINE) There is not a version especially for Linux users; therefore, you must use Wine (you might also need Winetricks ) to install Adobe Digital Editions. In order to create this guide, the Library has carried out tests using Adobe Digital Editions version 7.1 (earlier versions of the software have not worked). Follow the instructions from Section 1 of this manual, " Download an e-book (Windows/Mac/Linux) " until step 7. Then choose one of the following two options. Option A with WINE You must install Wine. Steps for installing Wine: 1. Open the Terminal. 2. Enter: This will add Ubuntu Wine PPA to the list of software sources. 9

10 3. Enter: This will update your lists and make this repository's software installable. 4. Enter: This will install Wine s latest 1.3 beta version and the web browser layout engine, Gecko. You will notice that some new libraries have been installed with new sources and a programme for processing.cab files on Windows. Go to Adobe Digital Editions Installers. Click on the operating system you use (Mac or Windows). Then, you must follow these instructions: 1. Click the Install button. 2. Open the executable file and click Run. 3. Answer " Yes " to confirm the installation of Adobe Digital Editions. 4. Accept the licence terms and conditions and click Next. 5. Check all the Adobe Digital Editions options and click Next. 6. Select the path where you want to install Adobe Digital Editions and click Install. 10

11 Once you have downloaded the file, right click and begin the Wine Windows Program Loader installation. Continue following the instructions in Section 1, "Download an e-book (Windows/Mac/Linux)" from step 11. Option B WINE with the help of WINETRICKS At Wine HQ you will find help documents and options for installing Winetricks. 1. Click on the following link to find different installation options for Winetricks in the section Installing Once Winetricks is installed, select the option "Install an app". 11

12 3. Select the option for Adobe Digital Editions (in this case 7.1). 4. Install Adobe Digital Editions. 5. Open Firefox and click on the Adobe Digital Editions icon. 12

13 2. DOWNLOADING THE DOCUMENT IN PDF The ProQuest Ebook Central platform allows you to download a maximum number of pages in PDF format per session from the PDF Chapter Downloads option. This option does not require installing any software or logging in. You have the possibility of downloading the entire book in different sessions. Follow the same procedure described above to access the book on ProQuest Ebook Central and, once you have the document, follow the steps listed below: 1. Click on Read online. 2. Click on the PDF icon. 13

14 3. A pop-up window appears with the maximum number of pages you can download. 4. Write the start and end pages of the document you are interested in (bearing in mind the maximum number of pages per download authorized by the system). 5. Click on Continue. 6. Click on Open PDF. 7. A PDF file is downloaded onto your device. 8. Now, simply open this file and you will have the selected pages in PDF. 14
