Introduction Until now, document publishing systems have remained independent from editorial and production workflows. While there has been a continual evolution throughout the history of desktop publishing, in most cases documents are still laid out manually, using an approach that hasn t changed in over twenty years. Publish Typefi has addressed this paradigm by solving the fundamental issue of desktop publishing: how to format content. It doesn t matter what that content is it could be a brochure, business stationery, a sales proposal, a research paper, or even an entire book. Using a patented Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven layout engine, Typefi Publish can turn almost any type of structured content into richly laid-out, print-ready documents. Typefi Publish transforms the way in which individual users, small workgroups, and even entire enterprises prepare and deliver content, by revolutionizing the publishing workflow. Bridging the gap between editorial and publishing environments, knowledge workers, authors and editors are enabled with the ability to produce rich, consistently formatted, perfectly styled documents. There s no need for content creators to delve into desktop publishing or to be familiar with the more complex formatting functions of Microsoft Word. Typefi Publish saves organizations time, hassle and effort while streamlining publishing projects and improving accuracy. 1
Typefi Publish Workflow At the heart of Typefi Publish is an XML-based content publishing platform with a Web-based interface for managing content, assets and document production. This interface, built on HTTP, Web Services and SOAP, enables connection and integration to other content repositories and systems. Document templates are created using Adobe InDesign. Typefi Publish includes a series of InDesign plug-ins enabling page objects to be tagged according to a defined content schema. In addition to tagging support for regular page objects, the plug-ins also enable the creation of custom objects and relationships, including the ability to dynamically resize text and graphics in frames in accordance with the parameters set by the template designer. Parentchild relationships also can be defined for dependent frames, such as background graphics, icons, vertical or horizontal lines and caption frames. Content is authored, edited and tagged in Microsoft Word using an add-in that allows authors to tag content according to chapter, heading, sections, footnotes and other content schema. Once a Word document has been tagged, it can be uploaded to the Typefi Publish server or published directly using a Word toolbar. Word content is converted to XML on the fly, or is extracted and stored in the content repository. The generated XML content is then matched to the corresponding InDesign template and document composition is initiated and monitored from the Web-based console. In addition to Microsoft Word, Typefi Publish can also use content created by other applications and tools, including XML editors, HTML editors, Microsoft Excel and content sourced from databases and Content Management Systems. Typefi Publish has the unique ability to automate the layout of pages and retain control of content across pages and sections, while taking advantage of InDesign for document composition. For example, Typefi Publish provides the ability to straddle content across pages, balance facingpage spreads, eliminate widows and orphans, control parent-child relationships for linked content (such as margin notes or footnotes) and perform other traditionally labor intensive and time consuming document layout tasks. At the end of the composition process Typefi produces an InDesign document, enabling the graphic designer to manually finesse the final output. This approach results in a best-of-breed workflow that marries human creativity with fast, efficient and consistent document composition. Any content changes made within InDesign can then be round-tripped back to XML and 2

Furthermore, Typefi Publish can be integrated with other XML-based publishing workflows for document composition, enabling content to be repurposed across different media and applications, including ebook, database and Web publishing. This client-server approach to document publishing is well-suited for workgroup-based collaboration, as it enables authors or editors to check-out content as a Word document, make editorial changes and check-in the edited document, where it is then converted back to XML. Additionally, since XML content is stored at section level in a document, sections can be included, reordered or excluded from a publication depending on the document type or edition. Benefits The benefits of automated publishing are significant for document publishers, as by automating document layout, productivity gains can be experienced through reduced composition time, lower production costs and faster time to market. As Typefi Publish leverages industrystandard tools, designers and content creators can continue to work within a familiar environment, so implementation requires minimal change management. Additional benefits of automated publishing using Typefi Publish include: Seamless management of fonts, graphics, logos and other layout assets Eliminates layout degeneration Content is separated from the design Content is automatically merged with the design with a single-click Round-tripping eliminates the need for identical edits across reused content 3
Markets Thanks to its unique publishing workflow and powerful automation capabilities, Typefi Publish serves a broad range of applications and markets. Typefi Publish addresses a diverse range of publishing requirements through its flexible approach to automated document publishing. also be built immediately from other project templates, such hard cover, large print and other trade-specific formats. be updated with changes made in the document. For regional travel guides that require extended language support, Typefi Publish is able to leverage the full Unicode support in Adobe InDesign and as a result, can publish local names, destinations and map content in almost any writing system currently in use today. Trade Publishing By their nature, trade publications use a set of page-based templates throughout the publication for news stories, feature items, advertisements and other content. This fixedtemplate format makes trade publications well suited to Typefi Publish. Editorial content can be authored and structured in Microsoft Word, then automatically flowed across appropriate master pages, building a complete print-ready publication, automatically. Trade publishers are driven by tight deadlines and publications often require several rounds of late-stage editing after the content has been introduced to the template. As Typefi Publish supports full round-tripping of content from the design template back to the content repository and source documents, publication content is always up-to-date and can be repurposed at any time, even enabling selected news stories to be published online. Furthermore, as Typefi Publish separates content from the template design, editors, contributing writers and journalists can work on different news stories and feature articles, independently. Once the editorial content is approved, the publication can be built automatically, at the click of a button. Alternative formats can Travel Publishing Travel guides have a unique set of layout requirements, as they typically demand complex content relationships to ensure supporting images and content appears alongside related content for a specific location or destination. Typefi Publish is well suited for handling such complex layouts, as it provides automated placement of inline and floating elements, including margin notes, box-out elements and other labor intensive tasks. Typefi Publish further simplifies travel publishing with built-in support for cross references. In addition complex page layout requirements, guide book content is often highly structured and includes locality details such as phone numbers, addresses, ratings, prices and other listing and locationspecific content. This type of content is typically stored in a database or XML repository. Through the open architecture of Typefi Publish, database and XML content can be automatically exported from a third-party system and added to the Typefi Publish content repository. Furthermore, this content can be edited in the InDesign document and by leveraging Typefi s round-trip workflow; the content database can Scientific Journals and Books Scientific publishers typically require a collaborative editorial workflow and use of specialized editorial content. In scientific publishing, several authors can collaborate on the same publication, with each section or chapter being the responsibility of a different author or set of authors. And by striving for a high level of prestige and significance, the value of a scientific journal or manual is highly dependent on the quality and presentation of its content. There is also an increasing requirement to publish scientific content across different media, in both online and offline formats. XML has emerged as the de-facto format for managing structured content in scientific publishing, as it provides an accessible format that can be repurposed across different media. As Typefi Publish is an XML-based content publishing solution, it can seamlessly integrate with existing XML authoring tools, transforming content into richly laid-out, perfectly formatted documents. One example of content integration is through Inera extyles, a leading scientific editorial solution based on Microsoft Word with support for the National Library of Medicine Document Type Definition, or NLM 4
DTD. This DTD is specifically developed to serve the scholarly publishing community and supports Mathematical Markup Language, or MathML, a W3C standard for describing mathematical notations as XML. By leveraging extyles powerful support for mathematical writing systems, mathematical symbols, expressions and notations can be authored in Microsoft Word and extyles, then exported as NLM DTD compliant XML and included in a Typefi project. Technical Publishing Technical publications often use sophisticated page layout templates, which include column-spanning figures, captions, cross-references and other elements. Due to their level of complexity, such pages are laid out manually by a layout professional. Typefi Publish is well suited to technical publishing and can easily handle the demand for sophisticated page layout, by intelligently building documents at the click of a button, driven by a set of pre-defined automation parameters. In addition to the requirement for complex layouts, many technical publications are updated frequently, particularly in computer and software publishing, as content has to be revised with each release of a new software version. These types of publications often use conditional content, as keyboard shortcuts, screenshots and nomenclature will differ between operating systems. Through Typefi s long established support for conditionalized text and image flow, defined content can change dynamically, depending on the template used. Through leveraging the support for conditionalized text flow, Typefi Publish enables technical publishers to expand into the digital content market. As all content uploaded to Typefi Publish is converted to XML, content can be easily repurposed into HTML for online presentation. Furthermore, repurposed online content can include media-specific content, such as hyperlinks and even video tutorials. Advertising and communications Advertisements are publicationdependent, as each advertisement requires different formats and sizes for each placement. Recruitment, real estate, classified and other placements all rely on manual layout to position each advertisement and make their content fit, which is a highly time consuming process as well as being prone to error. Typefi Publish transforms this model. By creating design templates that fit defined columns or spreads, approved content can be flowed into templates for on-demand proofing 5
and publishing of advertisement artwork. And thanks to the powerful AutoFit feature built-in to Typefi Publish, soft-bottom text frames can be created within a design template these frames automatically expand or shrink to fit their content while maintaining dynamic relationships between other page objects. This powerful AutoFit feature makes Typefi Publish well suited for advertising publishing, which demands complex object-level dependencies to ensure a consistent look and tight brand control. Additionally with an InDesign-based approach to publishing automation, Typefi breaks the historical constraint of all or nothing automation and allows designers to add a human touch in preparing the final documents. Using the standards-based architecture in Typefi Publish, advertising and communication workflows can be fully automated and integrated into existing management processes, resulting in more accurate, consistent and on-brand communication publishing. Clients can author and submit content directly from Microsoft Word or through an online form, and instantly proof print-ready PDF files of their advertisement, without any involvement from a designer. On-Demand Publishing On-demand publishing, as its name suggests, demands immediacy. However, the majority of on-demand publishing workflows lack automation or high quality typography, particularly in XSL-FO based composition engines, as this standard is inherently limited in what it can achieve both from a layout and typographic perspective. Whether you re publishing short or long documents on-demand, many publishing processes still require a high level of layout involvement. Typefi Publish brings automation to on-demand publishing. Through integration to third-party systems, Typefi can drive webto-print systems for publishing short documents such as business cards, menus, invitations and more. These types of applications can also be trigger-based for example, personalized business stationery could be published when a new employee is added to a staff directory. And as Typefi Publish leverages the powerful typographical controls of Adobe InDesign, published documents will conform to strict corporate identity guidelines. Typefi Publish can also add value to a range of long documents in on-demand publishing, by providing the author complete control over content editing and formatting. Certain long document publications such as self-published titles can be marginalized by removing the role of the traditional publisher, as the creator or creators fulfill the publishing role, taking editorial control of the content and preparing it for print. However when the author or creator desires a high level of document formatting, they can take as long formatting the content as they originally did to create it. By leveraging Typefi Publish, these content creators can produce manuscripts using their current editorial workflows and publish print-ready documents, on-demand. Typefi Publish also enables publishers to offer a service where their customers can pickand-mix content dynamically to create custom publications. On-Demand publications ranging from cookbooks and travel guides to text books can be created by customers within minutes, using a mix of publishers existing content and user-generated content. This allows publishers to monetize their backlist and efficiently offer more targeted publications, without the significant cost burden of manual recomposition. 6
How it Works Typefi Publish is a client-server solution comprising of a suite of modules. There are two server modules, Typefi Server which provides a project dashboard and repository, and Typefi Engine which uses Adobe InDesign Server for automated, intelligent page composition. Typefi Server and Typefi Engine can reside on the same server platform, or on separate servers. This architecture is completely scalable; Server and Engine clusters can be added to meet productivity and redundancy requirements. In addition to the two Typefi Publish server modules, there are also three client modules; Typefi Writer, Typefi Designer and Typefi FileManager. Writers, editors and other content creators author manuscripts in Typefi Writer, an add-in to Microsoft Word that is used to define structure to the content. Designers create rich templates using the Typefi Designer, a set of plug-ins for Adobe InDesign which allows full, rich template creation within InDesign. Finally, Typefi FileManager provides a transparent bridge for sharing project assets between the desktop and server modules, enabled by standard technologies including XML and SOAP. Typefi Writer enables the production of fully validated XML content files, known as ContentXML, or CXML, created within the familiar Word environment with no complex tagging or knowledge of XML required by the document author. The majority of tagging is applied to content using a point-and-click interface. Keyboard shortcuts are also provided for experienced users and for enhanced efficiency. A Typefi Style Sheet, or TSS, is automatically generated based on the available dynamic styles within the InDesign template. These styles are made available through Typefi Writer, which in turn allow the editor, proofreader or author to assign available template styles to text and images. The process of applying these styles creates structured content, which is used to describe how content will look in the published document. CXML s schema is based on the DocBook schema; an XML-based semantic markup language that is one of the most well established and widely used schemas in publishing today. In addition to applying pre-defined content styles, special characters and symbols can also be included in content, along with cross-references and text markers to conditionally tag content for different output intent. Typefi Writer also provides support for enhanced content items such as inline and floating page elements, liftout text frames and image captions. Prior to publishing the Word document to Typefi Publish server, the document can be validated Typefi Publish also offers a fully open SOAP and HTTP API that allows third-party applications to connect seamlessly and efficiently. This allows Typefi customers and business partners to create their own connectors and modules to integrate with Typefi suite of products. Typefi Writer Typefi Writer is a powerful tool for editors, proofreaders, authors and other content creators to simplify the process of creating structured reusable content. Typefi Writer 7
Placed XML content runs into Typefi Frames. These frames are regular InDesign text frames or graphic frames, but enable automated content insertion. against the project settings, ensuring all marked-up content conforms with the template properties. Incorrectly formatted content, such as use of non-included paragraph styles, can then be easily identified and re-mapped to dynamic styles. Typefi Designer Typefi Designer is a set of plug-ins for Adobe InDesign that is used to prepare document templates for automation. Typefi Designer is used to apply automation parameters and functionality to page objects in the InDesign document. These settings are applied within the familiar InDesign user interface Typefi Designer and Adobe InDesign using provided panels and tools no coding or scripting is required. However, InDesign scripts can also be used and triggered at certain points during the page composition process to expand functionality and achieve further layout customization, to meet specific user requirements. A Typefi template uses a defined structure for automation which includes sections, content, frames, fields and elements. Typefi Sections define which specific master pages and numbering schemes are used as new content flows in and new pages are produced during page composition. Typefi Fields enable insertion of data-driven content at the project, section or element-level. Project fields, such as a publication title, carry the same value across an entire project. Section fields, such as chapter titles or numbers, are unique only within the section within which they exist. Element fields are populated with their respective value at element-level. Typefi Elements are a powerful feature of Typefi Publish and provide the ability to work with simple or complex design components, including margin quotes, lift-outs, figures with captions and other page content. Typefi Elements comprise of one or more text or graphic frames, which automatically resize or are re-positioned depending on their defined resize options and relationships. Typefi Server All project assets are managed and controlled from start to finish using Typefi AutoFit 8
Licensing Models Typefi Server. Serving as the project dashboard, Typefi Server provides a virtual environment for designers, editors and content creators to collaborate together on project development all within a user and project-level security access. Typefi Publish is available through two software licensing models; a perpetual license and a subscription-based license. These different models provide users with choice and flexibility, based on their specific requirements. Once an InDesign template has been configured for automation, it is uploaded to the Typefi Server and is then assigned to a Job Option, which defines the specific output settings to be used by Typefi Engine for document composition and output. Template composition can then be triggered from Typefi Server or remotely from Word using Typefi Writer. In its unique editorial workflow, Typefi Server supports the roundtripping of edited content from InDesign, back to the XML repository, and all the way back to the original Word documents, ensuring content is always up-todate and synchronized across an entire project. Typefi Engine Typefi Engine is the sophisticated workhorse behind Typefi Publish. Written in pure Java, Typefi Engine leverages the powerful composition engine of Adobe InDesign Server to produce richly formatted documents at phenomenal speed, generating thousands of pages per hour. Typefi Engine is built on a scalable architecture it can either be run as a headless process on a single server, or across multiple distributed server platforms to meet redundancy and productivity requirements. Under the perpetual license, the software is supplied with no ongoing software license fees for the provided version. However, an annual maintenance program is available, which includes ongoing product support and new version releases. The subscription license allows the provision for the software to be leased on an annual basis and is subject to an ongoing annual fee. Subscribers can choose to cancel their subscription at the end of an annual period. In addition to the perpetual and subscription licensing models, Typefi Publish Server can be licensed as a Workgroup Server and a Premium Server model. Typefi Publish Workgroup Server for InDesign The Workgroup model of the Typefi Publish Server entitles limited client access by internal and external clients. All users accessing the server require purchase of individual Typefi Client Access Licenses, or CALs. Typefi Publish Workgroup Server is suitable for organizations requiring limited external access to Typefi Publish and purchase of less than 551 CALs. Client-Access is also included through licensing of Typefi Writer for Microsoft Word and Typefi Designer for Adobe InDesign. Typefi Publish Premium Server for InDesign The Premium model of the Typefi Publish Server, entitles unlimited client-access for internal and external access from outside a company s firewall and does not require purchase of Typefi CALs. The premium model is used for applications that require more than 550 CALs. Typefi Designer for Adobe InDesign Individual Typefi Designer licenses must be purchased for each InDesign workstation used for development of dynamic InDesign templates, or post-pagination editing of composed InDesign documents. The Typefi Designer license for Adobe InDesign also provides Client Access to the Typefi Publish Server. Typefi Writer for Microsoft Word Individual Typefi Writer licenses must be purchased for each workstation used for content authoring or editing in Microsoft Word.
