1 EDITORIAL SPECIFICATIONS PAGE 1 1. PAGE SIZE: Page size (trim) is x In addition, we will need bleed and crop marks offset from the trim by (so they are outside of the bleed area). No other printer s marks should be used, such as bleed marks, registration marks, color bars, etc. 2. PRESS-READY PDF WITH BLEEDS & OFFSET CROP MARKS FOR PRINTING: The final file should be a press-ready PDF file saved as PDF/X-1a. Optimum resolution is 300 dpi or higher. Please do not down-sample PDF to any resolution below 300 dpi. Please also provide native files as a backup. Native files will be needed soon anyway, after the guide has been released to print for online guide and mobile app production. 3. NATIVE FILES AS BACKUP & ONLINE/MOBILE PRODUCTION: Packaged InDesign IDML file with all images and fonts. Please perform preflight during the packaging process and make sure that there are no missing links and all images used in the InDesign layout accompany the IDML file. Once you package the file, the Photoshop and Illustrator images/links will be automatically saved in a separate folder. 4. CMYK COLOR SPACE: RGB and spot colors must be converted to CMYK 4-Color Process before submitting the press-ready file. 5. SINGLE PAGES: File should be exported as Pages (single pages) not Spreads. 6. EDITORIAL PAGES, AD PAGES, BUSINESS INDEX: The file you send will need to include every page of the Visitors Guide, including the ad pages. The ad pages should be left blank except for your header or footer. We must have headers and footers throughout the book, so please make sure to add page numbers on ad pages as well - they will used in our Business Index. Inside Front Cover, Inside Back Cover and the Back Cover should be left completely blank: headers or footers will not be printed on those pages. Business Index (1-4 pages depending on the size of the guide) will be created for you by Campus Publishers based on the advertisement contracts we receive. You may suggest fonts and provide graphic elements for us to include on the Business Index (top of the page) if you like. 7. SAFETY ZONE: All non-bleeding content should be kept at a minimum of.125 to.1875 from the trim. This is the safety zone for when the magazines are trimmed. 8. PAGE FOOTERS: Page number footers on all pages should be placed within the page footer safety zone, which is.4375 from the bottom of the page. This allows for a minimum of.125 from the ad space. Page number footers should also be at least.125 from the bottom of the page, although.1875 is recommended. It is helpful to see the Editorial Page Template (Page 2 of this document) as well as review the other Campus Publishers printed magazine samples to see how footers are handled. 9. BLACK BUILDS: Please use the following general guidelines for black builds: a. Text and logos should use CMYK build of b. Background fills, large graphic elements and outer borders should use a rich black CMYK build such as or similar build that does not exceed 250% total ink coverage (total sum of CMYK values). c. Please never use registration black for anything (except crop marks), which is a CMYK build of ACCURATE LAYOUT: The pages in your file should match up with the pages in the layout mockup we provide. You can start working on your design using the previous year s issue anytime, but please be aware of the possibility that the page count may change. We will send you a preliminary layout mockup approximately 6 weeks prior to the editorial due date and the final layout 2 weeks prior to the editorial due date. If there are any major changes in editorial page sequence and/or page count, please know that we will allow the time you need to adjust the design. You may want to have a stock pile of editorial pages with content and/or photography available in the event the page count increases. 11. DISCLAIMER: Your file needs to include a disclaimer, which is typically found on the Table of Contents or Welcome page. Disclaimer sample are provided as a reference: please see Page COVER ESSENTIALS: The cover should include the following items: Identification: Visitors Guide, Visitor Guide or Visitor s Guide. Year and/or issue number to distinguish from issue to issue. The year can be formated as or University website address. You may also consider adding social media icons. 13. FILE UPLOAD: Please upload the finished PDF to Campus Publishers FTP site. The URL is and that takes you directly to the upload page. No usernames or passwords are necessary. Please send a note to Monika that you are uploading the files. You may also use Dropbox (share a link with production@campuspublishers.com) or another method of online transfer that is convenient for you. 32 page magazine on our website: The t For more information, please contact Monika Edgar, Production Manager CAMPUS PUBLISHERS (800) monika@campuspublishers.com

7 TIPS FOR GRAPHIC DESIGNERS PAGE 6 WHAT TO EXPECT IN A HARD COPY PROOF The printer s proof will look very close to the final product. Colors in the proof, however, usually appear a little bit darker. When the actual product arrives, the colors will look brighter, facial tones less orange, blacks not as saturated as in the proof, and overall quality of images and text crisper and more defined. These differences are only noticeable to a trained eye, however, so extremely subtle. Please also note that the Xerox color proof is rasterized, therefore certain areas may appear a little less defined compared to the actual product. This is especially common when the type is set at a percentage of a color. For example, if some text in your artwork uses 70 or 80% black to simulate the effect of grey, the proof will not show the exact represention of this color and will appear slightly smudged. The good news is that it will print fine. If you prefer to have greater control over color, do not use screens/percentages of a color in your text, go ahead and create a solid build instead. COLOR CALLIBRATION TIPS FOR OFFSET PRINTING This information concerns some basic color adjustments in photographic images you are preparing for your University s Visitors Guide. The guide will be printed on a Web Press on 60 LBS gloss paper stock, with line screen. Since we use smooth coated paper, there isn t as much concern with not enough light reflection (color brightness) or dot gain (ink absorption) as there would be with uncoated paper. Coated and smooth super calendared stock will not have as much dot gain and will reflect more light back through the ink. However, you may notice that some of the pictures you are working with are clearly too dark or too muddy, and those are the ones that should be color corrected. Since dark tones will likely appear even darker when printed, you may want to compensate for that shift by opening up mid-tones and scale back the darks. If a person s face looks too warm on your screen, it will look even warmer when printed. Please note that each image is unique and still needs the designer s individual attention. Choose photos that show good contrast, high resolution (300 dpi) and are scanned properly. COLOR ADJUSTMENTS YOU CAN MAKE PRIOR TO SENDING THE FILE TO CAMPUS PUBLISHERS When evaluating the image, first convert the image to CMYK. In Photoshop, create an adjustment layer for each change and explore the following adjustments: IMAGE ADJUSTMENTS-CURVES: Open up midtones: 3-5% in the highlights, 15-20% in the mid-tones, 10-15% in the shadow areas Increase contrast 3-4% Increase hue/saturation 5-7% These adjustments are particularly useful in nature and campus or classroom shots. When you are increasing saturation, please be aware that people s faces will also be affected so if you don t want them to be VERY red in the face or VERY yellow - please exclude them from the increases in saturation by working with masks, or just double check to make sure it isn t affecting them adversely. To decrease warm/orange tones in faces: IMAGE-ADJUSTMENTS-HUE/SATURATION: check what is causing the image to appear too warm: reds or yellows? You will know by moving the Hue slider back and forth within the various hues. If it is the Red hue, reduce saturation in the Red. BLACK BUILDS Please use the following general guidelines for black builds: a. Text and logos should use CMYK build of b. Background fills, large graphic elements and outer borders should use a rich black CMYK build such as or similar build that does not exceed 250% total ink coverage (total sum of CMYK values). c. Never use registration black for anything (except crop marks), which is a CMYK build of EPSON PROOF OPTION We will point out potential problems in images prior to moving forward with production. However, if you wish to have a color proof issued and can submit the editorial file one week ahead of time, it is an option. The cost of the Epson proof is $10 per page plus shipping.
