3 Requirements for newsprint display ads Specifications for submitting your documents for print Camera-ready files Ads must be submitted as PDF/X-1a files. Files must be prepared in a layout program such as InDesign or QuarkXpress. Type must remain vector and fonts must be outlined or embedded. PDF files created by Adobe Photoshop are not considered camera-ready. Color ads must be Process CMYK only. Pantone and spot colors are never used (even if you re only paying for one color. ) Any Pantone or spot colors will be automatically converted to CMYK which my result in an unexpected color shift. All type, logos or graphics intended to print solid black should be set at 100% black (K). Greys should be set at a percentage of black (K). See page 5 for instructions on how to check for correct color in InDesign and Acrobat. Minimum photo resolution is 200 dpi. Newsprint products are printed at 85 lpi line screen. Maximum ink density is 240%. Dot gain is 35% - 38%. See the Newsprint reproduction section on the next page for more considerations. Ads must be delivered at size. Ads that are submitted with dimensions different than listed above could be modified or stretched to fit the space that was reserved. Materials submitted for work-ups Photos should be submitted as.tif or.jpg files and should be a minimum of 3 x 5 and 200 dpi. Other graphic elements, such as logos, should be submitted as vector-based.eps files if possible. Ad copy should be submitted in a Word or text document. Limit one proof for ads created by the Charlotte Business Journal production department you will have one opportunity to make changes. There is a standard $100 charge per additional proof if more changes are requested. Partial page ads must have borders or artwork that clearly defines the outer edge of the ad. A 0.5 pt rule will be added around any ad submitted with white space on any side. 4 Newsprint reproduction For the best possible reproduction we recommend you keep these things in mind: Image resolution The minimum photo resolution is 200 dpi. Remember that scaling a photo in a layout program will change the effective print resolution. For example an image set at 200 dpi in Photoshop, but placed in InDesign at 200% will have an effective print resolution of 100 dpi. If a bitmap (non vector) image with text is used we recommend a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. Registration limitations Newspaper printing is very different than heat-set magazine and book printing. Because of the thin weight of newsprint and high-speed nature of newsprint presses, the alignment of the cyan, magenta, yellow and black plates on press, known as registration, is rarely perfect. Type less than 8 points should be black. Setting small type in color may result in the text being illegible. Thin rules should also be black. We suggest making rules color only if they are 2 points wide or thicker. Use as few color plates as possible when making solid colors. For example, a green built as 80% cyan and 100% yellow will reproduce considerably better than a similar green that is built as 75% cyan, 8% magenta, 100% yellow and 5% black. Understanding dot gain and ink density Cold-set newsprint has considerably more dot gain than other forms of printing. What does that mean? Well, imagine having a paper towel and a sheet of wax paper side-by-side on your kitchen counter. Now put a drop of water in the center of each. The drop on the wax paper will hold its shape and sit on top of the paper, while the drop on the paper towel will be absorbed and more than double in size. Ink on newsprint behaves much like the water on the paper towel. Because of the absorbent nature of newsprint, the maximum amount of ink that paper can hold is less than what other papers can hold. The spreading ink also results in images often looking darker on paper than what your computer screen shows. Charlotte Business Journal s maximum ink density is 240%. That means the sum of the percentages of cyan, magenta, yellow, and black for any one color must add up to 240% or less. For example that green color that is built as 80% cyan and 100% yellow has an ink density of 180% well within acceptable tolerance. To make sure your ad is optimized for newsprint reproduction, you can use the North America Newsprint color preset provided with Adobe Creative Suite CS5. This will make sure your file uses the correct ink densities. Note that by default, all versions of Adobe Creative Suite use a generic profile meant for magazine printing. If you do not change that color setting your file will have a maximum ink density of 300%. Download our recommended ICC Profile Use this profile to edit your images and choose your colors for Charlotte Business Journal s newsprint products. This ICC Profile adjusts for a maximum ink density of 220% and previews the expected 38% dot gain. Do NOT use this for magazine reproduction. 5 How to check your color set-up For all camera-ready ad files, color should be set up as Process CMYK. All black, especially text, should be set up as 100%K only cyan, magenta and yellow should not be included. Here are some ways to check your files in InDesign and Adobe Acrobat Pro. 1. Check your color set-up in you Swatches window. If your colors are correctly set as process CMYK the two boxes to the right of the swatch should be: a solid grey square and a square made up of cyan, magenta, yellow and black triangles. If you see a square with a circle in the center, this means that your color is set up as a spot color. If you see a square made up of red, green and blue stripes, this means your color is set up as RGB. 3. Check color separations. Open the Separations Preview window (under Output in the Window tab). In that window, change View to Separations. If all of your black is built at 100%K only (or greys at a percentage of K only), all black and grey should disappear when you click off the eyeball on the black plate. If you can still see any image that should be only black in the CMY plates, you know that those other inks are present. If all of your colors are built as Process CMYK, the only plates present should be those four. There should not be any Spot Plates present at all. 2. To correct your swatch to CMYK: Double-click on the swatch or choose Swatch Options in the top right pull-down menu of the Swatches window. In this window, the Color Type should be Process. The color mode should be CMYK. 4. Check final PDF. The Output Preview window in Adobe Acrobat Pro works just like the Separations Preview in InDesign. If all of your black is built at 100%K only, all black should disappear when you uncheck the Process Black plate. If all of your colors are built as Process CMYK, the only plates present should be those four. There should not be any Spot Plates present at all. 7 How to submit print ads By If your ad is less than 9MB in size, to your account executive. Using your web browser Files up to 1GB in size are accepted. Using your web browser, go to: Fill in your contact information and select Send ad files to ACBJ publications. Then select Charlotte Business Journal and follow the instructions.
