1 Windows Movie Maker Getting Started Instruc onal Media publica on: 9 8/9/0 Introduc on Windows Movie Maker is free video edi ng so ware available from Microso. Users have to ability to add and edit videos, images, text, and audio to create highly engaging movies. The movies can then be easily shared with others. This document will explain the features of Movie Maker, and will prepare you with the skills necessary to create your own movies. Opening Windows Movie Maker To open Windows Movie Maker on HCC computers:. Click Start >All Programs> Instruc onal Media Applica ons> Movie Maker. Saving Your Project Before you begin your movie project, it is recommended to name your movie project by saving the project space. It is also recommend to save frequently while you are edi ng your movie.. A er you have opened Movie Maker, click the Movie Maker bu on (Fig, ) on the top le corner of the screen.. A menu will appear. Click Save project as (Fig, ).. At the Home screen, click the Title bu on (Fig, ).. You will no ce an item is added to the storyboard area (Fig, ).. To add text to the tle slide, double click the text area (Fig, ). 4. In the preview area (Fig, ), type in your movie tle. 5. To change the text size, color, or font, click on the Text Tools/Format tab (Fig 4, ) and use the available tools to edit the text. 2 Adding an Image Windows Movie Maker Ge ng Started [Publica on 9]. Click the Home tab (Fig 5, ).. Click Add videos and photos (Fig 5, ).. A window will appear. Locate the image on your computer and click Open. 4. The image will be added to the storyboard area (Fig 6). Each new image you add will appear in the storyboard area. Note: You can use the following image files in Movie Maker:.jpg,.jpeg,.jfif,.jpe.,. f,. ff,.gif,.bmo,.dib,.rle,.ico,.icon,.png, and.wdp. Fig 5 Adding a Video. Click the Home tab (Fig 5, ).. Click Add videos and photos (Fig 5, ).. A window will appear. Locate the video on your computer and click Open. 4. The video will be added to the storyboard area (Fig 6). Each new video you add will appear in the storyboard area. Note: You can use the following video files in Movie Maker:.wmv,.avi,.mov,.asf,.wm,.mts,.mts,.mt,.qt,.mp4,.mv4,.gp,.g,.kg,.mpeg,.mpg,.mpe,.mv,.mp,.mpv,.mod,.vob,.mt, and.mv. Fig 6 Adding a Cap on Movie Maker allows you to create cap ons for the videos and images you add to your movie.. Click an item in the storyboard area. A blue frame will appear around the item you have selected (Fig 6, ).. Click the Home tab (Fig 5, ), then click Cap on (Fig 7, ).. A purple text bar will appear underneath your selected item (Fig 8, ), and a text box will appear over your image/video in the preview area (Fig 8, ). 4. Type your cap on into the text box (Fig 8, ). 5. Use the tools in the Text Tools/Format tab (Fig 4, ) to edit your cap on. 6. You can change your cap on at any me by double clicking the purple bar underneath your selected item in the storyboard area (Fig 8, ). Fig 7 Fig 8

3 Windows Movie Maker Ge ng Started [Publica on 9] Adding Audio/Music Movie Maker allows you to add music and other audio files to your movie.. Click the Home tab (Fig 5, ).. Click Add music (Fig 9, ).. A window will appear. Locate the audio file on your computer and click Open. 4. The audio file will be added to the storyboard area and will appear as a green bar (Fig 0, ). To adjust the dura on of the audio file, see the Set Time Length for Each Item sec on. Note: You can use the following audio files in Movie Maker:.mp,.asf.,.wm,.wma,.aif,.aiff,.wav, and.m4a. Se ng The Time Length for Your Content This sec on will explain how to adjust the dura on of each type of content. Title Slide and Images: Fig. Click on an image or tle slide in the storyboard area.. Click the Video Tools/Edit tab (Fig, ).. Adjust the length by clicking the Dura on dropdown menu (Fig, ) and selec ng a me length. Videos:. Click on a video in the storyboard area. Fig. Click the Video Tools/Edit tab (Fig, ).. Click Trim tool (Fig, ). 4. Adjust the Start point (Fig, ) and End point (Fig, ) using the arrows. 5. When you are finished, click Save trim (Fig, ). Fig Cap on/text:. Click on a purple text bar in the storyboard area.. Click the Text Tools/Format tab (Fig 4, ).. 4 Windows Movie Maker Ge ng Started [Publica on 9] Rearranging Content in the Storyboard You can change the order of the videos, images, and text in the storyboard area.. Locate the item in the storyboard area you wish to rearrange.. Click and drag the item to your desired des na on in the storyboard area.. For example, the lightening image in Fig 5 has been reordered in Fig 6. Fig 5 Fig 6 Adding Credits. Click the Home tab (Fig 7, ).. Click the Credits bu on (Fig 7, ).. A text box will appear in the preview area (Fig 8, ). 4. Type names into the text box, pressing the Enter key a er each name. Fig 7 Fig 8 Previewing a Movie. Click a sec on in the storyboard area where you would like to begin the preview.. In the preview area, click the Play bu on (Fig 9, ).. Click the Enlarge bu on (Fig 9, ) to view the preview in full screen mode. 4. Hit the Escape key on your keyboard to exit full screen mode. Fig 9 4

5 Windows Movie Maker Ge ng Started [Publica on 9] Sharing a Presenta on Movie Maker projects must be saved as a movie file before they can be shared and viewed. You cannot share/send a project version of the file.. Once you are finished your movie, click the Movie Maker bu on (Fig 0, ).. Hover your mouse over the Save movie op on (Fig 0, ).. Click For Computer (Fig 0, ). 4. Create a name for your movie and click Save. Note: A saved video file (.mp4 or.wmv) cannot be edited using Movie Maker; videos files can only be viewed. To edit your presenta on again, you must open Fig 0 Troubleshoo ng Movie Maker files (.wlmp) cannot be edited from mul ple computers.
