3 NewsBase Concept You can simplify and accelerate the entire process of implementing a news production system when you choose one of the several configurations offered in the Sony NewsBase systems. We make it easy for you. We minimize the costs of up-front engineering and system integration by offering several pre-configured systems. We take responsibility for installing, testing, and commissioning. Optional features are available to tailor the system to your needs. Pre-designed racks and consoles are standard. All software is loaded and checked out. Your system is assembled and checked out at the Sony Systems Integration Center, then assembled and checked out again at your site. We provide on-site training for your operators. The package includes a one-year contract for SupportNet SM 24-hour customer support service. State-of-the Art Technology Sony newsroom technology is based on MPEG2 4:2:2P@ML compression, which offers a number of important advantages in the server, as well as in contribution links, editing, transmission and distribution. Primarily, MPEG2 provides major savings in signal bandwidth and storage space. It also allows users to combine complimentary technologies from different manufacturers. ClipServer/ClipEdit System Another key element of NewsBase technology is ClipServer / ClipEdit system hardware and software, a networked, non-linear video browsing and editing system. With this system which uses industry-standard, third party PC hardware multiple users can access material from the server, then browse and edit from their desktop workstations. A basic package enables two simultaneous Clip system inputs and four newsroom ClipEdit seats. Additional input stations and ClipEdit user seats can be added for a total of up to 20. Sony s open system architecture and common interchange standard allow easy interface with newsroom text systems. A number of journalists can work on the system simultaneously, each using a workstation for text and video editing. NewsBase systems can be configured to support any operation from daily bulletins and a couple of evening newscasts up to a 24-hour all-news format. Scaleable Systems In addition to the options mentioned above, NewsBase Select Systems are available from 5 to 24 dynamically allocated in-out ports, with a scaleable, flexible range of storage time options. A basic system includes a half-populated 64 x 64 router (32 x 32), which can be expanded to a full 64 x 64 as facility needs grow. Basic systems are furnished with two user PCs, and more can be added for additional control stations. For example, extra user application terminals enable more points of control for material management, filing feeds into the server (on an ad hoc or scheduled basis), accessing server material for use with linear editors, and playback of material to air.
