1 Longitudinal Timecode Posted by fredgervase - 25 Nov :37 I am going to record music on the left track, and longitudinal timecode on the right track, of an audio recording. When I playback the recording I'm going use a wireless microphone transmitter and receiver to send and record the longitudinal timecode onto the right channel of my camera. Can lightworks sync the two longitudinal timecode tracks together? I'm going to be stopping and starting the audio recording and camera alot to produce a music video and I want to be able to sync it up to edit the footage. If your camera has an external Timecode in (Usually via BNC type or XLR connector) you could plug the transmitter output from the Audio recorder into it and set the Camera's Timecode generator to External and it should cause the cameras Timecode Generator to lock to it (Assuming it has this facility) This would then mean your pictures would record with whatever the timecode your audio recorder is sending. Most Prosumer cameras do. Consumer type cameras MiniDV etc do not. As far as I know LW cannot decode an Audio type (Longitudinal)timecode signal. You would need something like 2 Skotel Timecode Reader/Generators to decode the timecode to actually see the frame numbering information. 2 Hi fredgervase Normally the Timecode information of a digital file is written in what is called the Video ancillary Data (VANC) of the recording (When recording to tape) and is embedded in the metadata of a file type recording. What type of camera are you planning on using Tape based or File based? Edit I have just read your other post "I shoot with the JVC GY-HD200 camera and record to the ProHD DR-HD100 which is a JVC branded firestore hard drive recorder made by Focus Enhancements" You would need to get hold of a Timecode Embedder to connect your JVC Cameras Video O/P & the O/P from your Audio recorders Music track (Track 1)Timecode O/P (Track 2) and connect the O/P from the Embedder into your Firestore Hardrive I/P. That way the Firestore will record the composite of all three signals that is, Video, Audio(Music) & Timcode as one signal resulting in the file containing the necessary timecode info and therefore you would not need to post sync things afterwards. This method means that only 1 channel of music will be in the file but when you have completed the edit you simply restripe the stereo version onto the finished edit timeline in LW. Hope that helps. 3 As far as I know, Lightworks can only read TC embeded in the video file, such as DV time code. Using Lightworks you'll have to do it by manually syncing audio wave form spikes with video ques. Using consumer camcorders, most people just play back the music that will be used in the final video on a boombox while filming the talent lip syncing to that with the cameras picking up the boombox music with their interal mics. Then in Lightworks you manually sync the camera audio to the master music track then throw away the camera audio. Posted by ABCNNIE - 25 Nov :32 Hi Khaver, I just can't type quickly enough. Working in Broadcast Television and in particular Public Broadcasters, you generally find you come across all types of aquisition formats and you just have to make the post side of things work the best way you can and that includes sometimes having to rig things up for a particular result. 4 Cheers Posted by Greg_E - 25 Nov :45 Reading timecode from an audio track is one of the features that really should be added to Lightworks somewhere down the road. Until then a clap slate is still king. There are a few slate applications for Android tablets, I assume there are also a few for ipad too. I haven't tried any because the ones that look like they are decent cost money and none of them sync to timecode, just a running counter. I also haven't had a need for a slate so not worth the money just to experiment. now if you want to get the best thing, buy a clap slate that also has a timecode reader/generator built in and display, sync it to your audio recorder, go hold it in front of the camera to record the numbers counting, then clap the bar for a final check on audio and video sync. Markertek and B&H Photo should have a few of these listed if you want to compare prices. Example of one device: _Radio_Slate.html Posted by khaver - 25 Nov :58 Some day there will be a universal sync pulse broadcast simultaneously around the world through cellphone towers, satelites, TV broadcast towers, etc. and all recording equipment will be able to sync to and record the contents of that pulse. The pulse will contain an increamenting number similar to a computers clock that won't need to start over for several decades. Just dreaming. 4 / 6

5 Posted by ABCNNIE - 25 Nov :36 Hi Khaver I seem to remember some time ago there being such a device, an atomic clock somewhere in the pacific. Broadcasters would use this signal to reset Oscillators contained within Rubidium ovens (Highly stable environment)on site at Broadcast Stations. SPG's (Sync Pulse Generators) that were timing all the sources within the stations Studios, Telecine, VT areas would be retimed every now and again to ensure timing was where it should be which in the old days was a requirement for Fedlocking your network. Particularly important if you have five or 6 states hanging off one state for live transmission of programs. These days it is done via GPS and the signal is constant but they don't use Rubidium Ovens to house oscillators anymore but if the Satellite goes down well!!!!!!
