1 a Avid DVD by Sonic v4.5.1 ReadMe for the Windows XP Operating System Important Information Avid recommends that you read all the information in these release notes thoroughly before installing or using any new software release. This document describes compatibility issues with previous releases, hardware and software requirements, software installation instructions, and summary information on system and memory requirements. This document also lists fixed bugs and all known remaining bugs or limitations. 2 Software Requirements The following section describes the Avid DVD by Sonic software requirements. For the most up-to-date information about hardware and software requirements, go to Supported Operating System Avid DVD by Sonic supports the Windows XP operating system. Minimum System Requirements Avid recommends a minimum 1.5 GB of RAM with Avid Xpress Studio. At least 512 MB of memory is recommended using Avid DVD by Sonic standalone. Hardware and Software Limitations Authoring This section describes hardware and software limitations for your Avid DVD by Sonic application: Apple QuickTime is required by Avid DVD by Sonic and you must install this before installing Avid DVD by Sonic. Avid DVD by Sonic requires Windows Media Player 7.0 or later. If this version of Windows Media Player is not installed, you will not be able to start Avid DVD by Sonic. If DVD Producer is installed on your system, you must first uninstall DVD Producer before you install Avid DVD by Sonic. --> Chinese characters are not supported and cannot be entered with the Text tool in Avid DVD by Sonic. --> If you set the Normal color to white when you set the Highlight Color for a menu, the highlights are invisible when simulating or when playing the final project from disc. --> When you add or change a button link in the Menu Editor window, the button s properties are not immediately displayed in the Properties window. 2

3 Hardware and Software Limitations Building Workaround: To display the button s properties, click another button or the menu background and then click the button again. --> A button s playlist is automatically lost (without warning) when you clear or replace a button s link, or when you delete the button. --> When a menu contains a video background, animated buttons, or audio, the End Frame Still option is not available. --> If after you remove an audio file from a menu you then add another audio file, the new file is not immediately displayed in the Properties window. Workaround: You must open and close the Properties window to see the menu s new audio file displayed in the Properties window. --> If you select the Redo command multiple times, it might cause First Play to be reassigned. --> If you delete a selected subtitle track (with the Delete Subtitle Track command from the Right-click menu) when an audio track is also selected, the system deletes the audio track in addition to the subtitle track. --> When you use the Order command to move menu objects to the front or back, the result is not immediately visible in the Menu Editor window. Workaround: Select a different menu in the List window, and then reselect the edited menu to display the results in the Menu Editor window. --> When you use a system with two computer monitors, Avid DVD by Sonic dialogs are split between the two monitors when you first open a project. --> When you select 5.1 Dolby Digital audio clips in the Movie Timeline window, the files are incorrectly displayed as Multichannel 2/1 in the Properties window. --> When you write a project to disc, the progress bar might appear to be stuck (at either 0% or 100%) for up to several minutes, the disc will eventually write successfully. --> You ll receive an error message when you output a dual-layer project to DLT from a disc image. 3

4 Workaround: It is possible to output dual-layer projects to DLT from the current project. --> When you output a project that contains audio that was transcoded, you might hear a small portion of the audio during the build process. --> The process might fail if you attempt to write a DVD folder to a project folder. Workaround: Write to the default location of the DVD folder (to a Builds subfolder in the project folder). --> If after you output to a DVD Volume (Build > Make DVD Folder) and disc (Build > Make DVD Disc) you delete the volume and then attempt to output to another DVD Volume, the output will fail with an error message. --> When you view 16 x 9 movie tracks on final discs, if the track contains multiple subtitle streams, only the first stream is viewable in Letterbox mode. In Wide mode, all streams are viewable, though their numbering may be offset. --> An error message is encountered when you build a project that contains buttons that almost overlap (within 1 2 pixels). Since the buttons do not actually overlap, you can continue to output the project without any problems with the final disc. --> When you write ROM content, files larger than 1 GB become corrupt. --> After you use the Save As command, the default destination paths for disc images and DVD Volumes are still set to the previous project folder. Workaround: When you write disc images or DVD Volumes, make sure to update their destination paths if you use the Save As command. Importing and Previewing --> In the Palette window, if you right-click a Photoshop file that contains layer to delete it, an error message occurs. Workaround: Press Control+Delete when you select the Photoshop file to delete it. --> Avid DVD by Sonic does not support graphic images with alpha channels. 4

5 Hardware and Software Limitations --> AVI and QuickTime video files larger than 1 GB cannot be dragged to the Menus column in the List window to create motion menus. Workaround: First transcode these files to MPEG-2, so they are smaller. --> Do not delete the Transcodes folder in the Avid DVD by Sonic folder inside the Temp directory. This might result in not being able to open projects that contain menu audio that was not DVD compliant (and required transcoding). --> Make sure a project s asset files are not moved or deleted from their hard drive location. Before you move or delete an asset file, first delete any references to them in the Avid DVD by Sonic project. To do this, delete the menus and movies from the List window, as well as any assets from the Palette window. --> When you import large media files (at least 60 minutes or longer) that were not encoded with an SD-1000, they might continue to process even after the Status Bar displays 100%. --> If you preview MPEG-2 still images with the file extension.m2v in the Palette window, it displays the image for only an instant (1 frame). --> It is possible to import the same asset to a project multiple times. Once imported however, it is only possible to delete duplicate assets from the project if they are not in use. --> When you attempt to open a project that uses Photoshop files that you have renamed, moved, or deleted, you are not prompted to locate the file. Workaround: Before you rename, move, or delete these files, make sure they are no longer in use by any of your Avid DVD by Sonic projects. --> When you import a Photoshop file that contains an Overlay layer with a transparent background, the overlay image size is reported incorrectly in the Palette window. In addition, the overlay images might become distorted. Refer to the Avid DVD by Sonic User s Guide for information on preparing menu layers in Photoshop files. --> If the Palette window is resized so that the vertical scrollbar appears, if you delete one of the media files toward the bottom of the window, it might cause some media files to display the wrong thumbnails. Workaround: To fix this redraw problem, simply resize the Palette window. 5

6 --> It is possible to import MPEG-2 files (with GOP lengths of 16 and 17) that are not DVD compliant to a PAL project. When you output the project, the files will not be transcoded to make them DVD compliant. Simulating Workaround: When you prepare MPEG-2 files for PAL projects, make sure the GOP lengths are DVD compliant (for 1 B-Frame, GOP lengths of 7, 9, 11, 13, or 15; for 2 B-Frames, GOP lengths of 7, 10, 13, and 16). --> An error message appears when you cancel the Rendering Motion Menus when you press Enter (during Simulation mode). Workaround: Click Cancel. --> An error is encountered when you simulate projects with MPEG movies that contain audio imported from an AVI video file. These projects are successfully written to disc, since the files are automatically transcoded before building the project. --> When you simulate motion menus or still menus with audio, the menu or audio might not loop correctly if the audio is longer than the Menu Duration, and was added after the Menu Duration was set. Workaround: Re-enter the Menu Duration. --> When you use Software Simulation with video that was encoded with Picture Structure set to Field, video and audio might become out of sync when you jump to chapter points. This problem does not occur when you play projects written to disc. --> When you use Software Simulation with projects that contain Dolby Digital audio or MPEG-1 Layer 2 audio, the audio might drop out when you resume playback after you pause. --> When you simulate a project with audio tracks that contain MPEG-1 Layer 2 audio clips, the audio track is incorrectly identified as PCM in the Remote Control window. --> In Simulation mode, after you play a movie with PCM audio followed by a movie with no audio, the Remote Control window indicates that the movie contains Dolby Digital audio. 6

7 Accessing Avid Online Support --> It is not possible to simulate movies that contain Dolby Digital audio streams with embedded time code. It is also not possible to preview these streams from the Palette window. --> Audio Transcoder does not currently support bit rates of 96 kbps or 112 kbps.
