This document is a release note for Interplay Common Services (ICS) 1.3 for use with Interplay Central 1.3 and Interplay Sphere. Note: Interplay MAM does not support ICS 1.3 for video playback. Interplay MAM , 4.1.2, and 4.2 require ICPS Interplay MAM will support ICS for video playback in a future ICS release. If you are not sure which version of ICS you have installed, you can verify the version number. To verify the version number, connect to the ICS server console and type ics_version.sh then press Enter. 3 Overview ICS is a set of software services that serve layouts for applications, provide user authentication, manage system configuration settings, and deliver video playback over the network to webbased and mobile clients used with the following Avid solutions: Interplay Central Interplay Sphere Interplay MAM Note: Interplay MAM does not support ICS 1.3 for video playback. Interplay MAM , 4.1.2, and 4.2 require ICPS Interplay MAM will support ICS for video playback in a future ICS release. Specifically, ICS consists of: Interplay Central Middleware Service Interplay Central User Management Service Interplay Common Playback Service Interplay Common Configuration Service ICS installs all services on the same server, and multiple servers can be clustered together to obtain high-availability and horizontal scale. What s New? This section provides more detail on what s new in ICPS 1.3. For a more comprehensive list of new features in the latest releases of Interplay Central and Interplay Sphere, consult the documentation provided for those solutions. Service Colocation Interplay Central previously consisted of different software services, some developed to run on a Windows server, others to run on a Linux server. All services are now compiled for Linux and run on the same server, reducing the complexity of the setup and reducing the cost of the hardware required to run Interplay Central. For Interplay Sphere, which previously used the Interplay Common Playback Service (ICPS), it now connects to ICS although it continues only to integrate with ICPS service specifically. Interplay Central and Interplay Sphere can share an ICS cluster. Platform & OS Support This section describes changes to the hardware platform and required operating system. Qualification of HP DL360 G8 ICS 1.3 continues to support the HP DL380 G7 that was previously required for Interplay Central. For new installations (or if you are expanding an existing installation) the HP DL360 G8 server is now qualified. Clusters can consist of a mix of HP DL380 G7s and HP DL260 G8s. 3

4 The G8 series provides CPU options with more power we have qualified a server with 2 x 8- core 2 GHz (2.8GHz turbo) CPU and 64 GB RAM. Additionally, the DL360 platform is a 1U server (the DL380 is 2U) and therefore needs less rack space. It is a more cost effective server and no functionality or performance is lost. Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.2 ICS requires Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.2. RHEL is a commercially supported open source operating system. Note: Do not install any RHEL 6.2 patches or upgrade to RHEL 6.3. Red Hat is not free, and Avid does not redistribute it or include it as part of the ICS solution. In order to be legally compliant with the RHEL EULA, customers are required to procure a RHEL support subscription, a commercial offering that recurs annually. RHEL support offers two key components: Technical support for OS-related issues. The level of support depends on the support subscription purchased by the customer. Indemnification. Because RHEL is an open source project, there is a risk that it will be discovered to infringe on patents and the patent holders will take legal action. Red Hat protects its customers by taking legal responsibility for the distribution. There are two different ways to provision RHEL support: HP offers offers RHEL 3-yr. renewable support subscriptions. Red Hat offers different tiers of annual support subscriptions directly. Installation & Configuration Materials The ICS 1.3 Installation & Configuration Guide is greatly expanded and improved from previous versions (based on the ICPS Installation & Configuration Guide). It contains new sections that help you prepare for an ICS deployment in advance, and others that provide conceptual information that provides you with better context and understanding for key installation steps. Note that the process of upgrading from Interplay Central 1.2.x to Interplay Central 1.3 involves backing up the user management database, decommissioning the previously used Windows servers, and then upgrading the (former) ICPS servers to ICS servers. Lastly, you must restore the user management database. Use the Upgrading from Interplay Central 1.2.x to Interplay Central 1.3 Guide. Additionally, the ICS Installation & Configuration Companion provides video training content to walk & talk you through the ICS deployment process, with key installation procedures screencaptured and narrated. 4

New Features & Functionality This section lists functional changes to ICS. Multi-ISIS Support ICS 1.3 supports multi-isis configurations. If a single Interplay Production Engine registers assets on more than one ISIS, ICS can playback video on any ISIS workspace. ISIS 2000 Support ICS 1.3 supports all ISIS models: ISIS 7000, ISIS 5000, and ISIS Consult the Compatibility Notes section in this document for more details. Avid Media Format Support ICS 1.3 supports additional Avid media formats: DNxHD 85/100 Avid Sphere h Mbps proxy Avid Motion JPEG (JFIF) formats SNMP Agent An SNMP agent that integrates with Avid System Monitor and provides monitoring of server resources for support and maintenance purposes. Compatibility Notes This section contains compatibility information related to ICS 1.3. Operating System ICPS requires Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.2 (64-bit). Note: Do not install patches or upgrade to RHEL 6.3 or later without explicit instructions to do so from Avid. Browsers ICPS provides an Adobe Flash video player that Interplay Central and Interplay MAM embed in their respective web-based interfaces. For information on browser support, consult the corresponding documentation for the Avid system or product you are using. 5

6 Avid Systems & Storage The following table provides supported versions. Minimum version support is different if you are configuring Interplay Sphere. Consult Interplay Sphere documentation. 8 P1 Issues None. P2 Issues MPLAY-2526 (Interplay Central) If you import Canon 5D media from Media Composer or Newscutter to Interplay, Interplay Central cannot play them. Workaround: None. MPLAY-2503 (Interplay Central) When you add markers to clips while playing them, you hear small irregularities in the audio and the audio over time can drift. Workaround: Pause and then restart playback. MPLAY-2402 (Interplay Sphere) If you lose your internet connection and you try to play remote media that has not already been cached, the software hangs. Workaround: Restore internet connection or force restart software. MPLAY-1669 (Interplay Central) Sometimes when you capture clips and monitor them while capture is occurring, the final clip after recording is complete has a few extra black frames added. Workaround: Choose Update Media Status from the player drop-down options menu. MPLAY-1571 (Interplay Central) Media captured to Interplay by an EVS device cannot be opened by Interplay Central. Workaround: Open the captured asset using Media Composer and check it in again. MPLAY-499 (Interplay Central & Interplay Sphere) The Interplay Central Settings admin UI instructs you to enter multiple system director IP addresses separated by a comma. This results in an invalid configuration. Workaround: Separate IP addresses using a semi-colon. P3 Issues MPLAY-1581 (All) The operating system reports memory usage for all Flash activity, and based on this value, the ICPS Flash player manages assets in its local cache. If you have other instances of Flash open (e.g. a Youtube player), ICPS asset caching will be less efficient. Workaround: Close all other instances of Flash. MPLAY-1426 (Interplay Central) If you consolidate AMA assets from Media Composer or NewsCutter and import them to Interplay Production and ISIS, the timeline may not initially load the first time, and may not load at all. Workaround: Re-open the assets in Media Composer or NewsCutter and re-check them in. 8

9 MPLAY-1313 (Interplay Central) Panning audio full Right in Mono mode reduced the volume of the audio. Workaround: None. MPLAY-603 (Interplay Central) Sometimes media deleted from Interplay still appears online in Interplay Central due to ICPS caching falling out of sync. Workaround: From the player s drop-down menu of options, choose Update Media Status. 9
