1 Respondus 4.0 Campus Wide Training Respondus 4.0 is a powerful application for creating and managing exams that can be printed or published directly to your WorldClass courses. This tutorial will cover in the detail the process to create exams in Microsoft Word or Notepad. The exams will be uploaded to Respondus and published to your course. Table of Contents 1. To download Respondus copy the following link and paste in the start search menu. a. \\its60\apps\respondus 4.0 b. Open the Installation Information document and follow the instructions. Preparing exams in Microsoft Word or Notepad 1. Turn off automatic numbering in Word. a. Click File tab. b. Click Options. c. Click Proofing. d. Click Auto Correct Options. e. Click AutoFormat as You Type Tab. f. Uncheck the box Automatic Numbered and bulleted Lists. Page 1 of 11

2 To format True/False and Multiple Choice questions, use these guidelines. g. Type question number, followed by a period, followed by space, then the question text. h. Type answers in letters using abc sequence, type a, followed by period, followed by space, followed by answer text. i. For correct answer type an * asterisk, followed by letter, followed by period, followed by space Other question types can also be used. These include Multiple Response and Matching questions. 3 2. To format Multiple Response (all that apply) questions a. Add one return after the previous question. b. Start with Type: MR. c. Refer to step 2 for formatting the question and answer options. d. Add an asterisk before all correct answer options. e. Skip one line and start the next question. f. Repeat for all Multiple Response questions in the quiz. 3. To format Matching questions a. Add one return after the question. b. Start With Type: MT. c. Add the question number followed by a period, a space, and the text of the question. d. For answer options add one space after the question e. Enter selection followed by an equal s sign and the correct answer. Page 3 of 11

4 Feedback For self-assessments, you may wish to set up question or answer feedback. 5. Feedback for individual answer choices can be imported by placing the feedback immediately after the answer choice by beginning the line with symbol. There must be at least one space between symbol and the feedback text. Example: Title: Speed of Light 3) Who determined the exact speed of light? a. Albert No. Albert Michelson determined the exact speed of light. *b) Albert Yes. Albert Michelson won the Nobel Prize for Physics for determining the exact speed of light. c) Thomas No, Thomas Edison did not determine the exact speed of light. d. Guglielmo No. Marconi did not discover the exact speed of light, but he did win the Nobel Prize for Physics for his work with radio waves. 6. General feedback, which provides feedback for an overall question (opposed to feedback for individual answers), must appear immediately after the question wording and before any of the answer choices. The line must also begin with symbol, and there must be at least one space between symbol and the feedback text. For Example: Title: Speed of Light 3) Who determined the exact speed of Albert Michelson was the first American to win the Nobel Prize in Physics (1907) for his measurements of the speed of light. 5 7. Save your file as a text file a. Click File > Save As b. Save as Type: Select Plain Text (*.txt). c. Select Windows (Default). d. Click Ok. Importing to Respondus 1. Launch Repondus 4.0 Campus Wide. 2. Click Import Questions. Page 5 of 11

6 3. A dialog box opens with several options. a. Type of file Select Plain text (.txt) or Microsoft Word. b. Browse to the file to upload. c. Create a new document, named: - Provide a name (Final Exam). d. Click Preview and verify any errors in Preview Results. i. Warnings and Notes that indicate no correct answers or multiple answers for a question need to be fixed. The notes will tell you which question(s) contain an error. You can correct the errors in your file and re-import or correct the questions once published to D2L. ii. Warnings and Notes that indicate duplicate question title has been changed can be ignored. e. 7 Publishing to your course 4. Click Preview and Publish tab. 5. Click Publish. 6. Click Publish Wizard. 7. Select Publish to single course. 8. Select add new server. The D2L server needs to be setup once. Page 7 of 11

8 9. Select Yes, check for preconfigured server settings/click Next. 10. Server Settings a. Enter a name to describe the sever (D2L) b. Enter your RegisNet credentials. c. Check the box to Save my User Name and Password. d. Click Next. 11. After the connection test is done click Next/Click Finish. 12. You will be taken back to the publish wizard screen. Click Next. This will establish a connection from Respondus to D2L. This may take a few minutes. Page 8 of 11

9 13. Select your course you wish to publish too. a. Ensure Create new quiz is selected under Quiz. b. Uncheck Apply Random Sections if your exam is not random. c. Click Next. 14. Wait for the publish process to complete. Click Finish. Page 9 of 11

10 Sharing your Respondus file with other faculty 15. Respondus automatically saves Files to C:\Respondus Projects\. a. The Respondus file can be sent to other faculty to load into their courses. 16. To send the Respondus Compose a new . a. Click Attach File. b. Browse to C:\Respondus Projects\. c. Locate the folder for your quiz and open it. d. Select the rsp file to send. 17. To open a Respondus file that has been sent to you. a. Save the Respondus file to a location on your computer. b. Open Respondus. c. Click Open. d. Click Browse and locate the file on your computer/ Click Open. e. The file will open and automatically save to your Respondus Projects folder. Retrieving Tests from D2L Existing exams in D2L can be retrieved with Respondus and sent to other faculty to load into their courses. Page 10 of 11

11 1. Click Retrieval Tab. 2. Click Retrieve Questions. 3. The server you created needs to be selected. Click Next. 4. This establishes a connection to D2L. a. Choose Course to Retrieve from Select the course your quiz is in. b. Retrieve Assessment Type Select Quiz/ Select your quiz. c. Enter a name for the new file (Required) Name your quiz. d. Click Next 5. Your quiz will be imported and saved to Respondus. Page 11 of 11
