1 Importing a Text File into the Respondus Format Introduction This document will introduce faculty members to Respondus, a powerful tool for creating and managing exams that can be published directly to Blackboard. For additional information and assistance in using Respondus, please contact IRT (Instruction and Research Technology) at and/or at Creating an assessment Using Notepad The first step in importing an assessment using Respondus is to create an assessment using Notepad in text format. You may also use MS Word to create an assessment in RTF format. Creating Multiple Choice Questions Each question must begin with a question number followed by either a period or parentheses. Example: 1) or 1. The question itself must be proceeded with at least one space. 1) Which color is not included in the flag? 1. Which color is not included in the flag? Each answer must begin with a letter followed by either a period or parentheses. 1) Which color is not included in the flag? a. red b. yellow c. blue d. white To indicate which is the correct answer, place an asterisk in front of the correct answer. 1) Which color is not included in the flag? a. red *b. yellow c. blue d. white Giving Feedback Feedback can be imported by placing a ~ (tilde) in front of the feedback that should be issued for a correct answer. symbol can be used for feedback given to an incorrect answer. There must be at least one space to the right of the ~ and the text you want displayed for the feedback. 1) Which color is not included in the flag? a. red *b. yellow c. blue d. white ~ Way to Incorrect. Please read the chapter 2 for more information. Respondus 1
2 Creating True or False Questions Creating true or false questions is done the same way as multiple choice questions. 2) The sky is red. a. True *b. False To indicate which is the correct answer, place an asterisk in front of the correct answer. Important: The true answer choice must be listed prior to the false answer choice in order for Respondus to recognize it as a true and false question type. Giving Feedback Feedback can be imported by placing a ~ (tilde) in front of the feedback that should be issued for a correct answer. symbol can be used for feedback given to an incorrect answer. There must be at least one space to the right of the ~ and the text you want displayed for the feedback. Creating Essay Questions To create an essay question, the first line must begin with Type: E Type: E 3) Explain the scientific method. a. The scientific method is the process by which scientists, collectively and over time, endeavor to construct an accurate (that is, reliable, consistent and non-arbitrary) representation of the world. Creating Fill in the Blank Questions To create a fill in the blank question, the first line must begin with Type: F Type: F 4) Lincoln was born in a Feedback can also be given. Creating Matching Questions To create a matching question, the first line must begin with Type: MT. Each answer must contain 2 parts. The 2 parts of the match must be separated with an = Spaces before or after the = are allowed. Type: MT 5) Match the following items: a. Cow=Moo b. Cat=Meow c. Dog=Bark Feedback can also be given. Creating Multiple Answer Questions Multiple answer questions are similar to multiple choice questions; the difference being that there is more than one correct answer. To import a multiple answer question, the first line must begin with Type: MA Respondus 2
3 Type: MA 6) Which color is not included in the flag? *a. green *b. purple c. white d. blue e. red Feedback can also be given. Example of TXT file that has been created. This TXT file can be imported into Respondus and used to generate a quiz. Once the questions have been created in the text file, it is now time to import them into Respondus. Respondus 3
4 Importing an assessment Using Notepad Now that you are ready to import an assessment using Respondus. To Import a Text File into Respondus 1) Run Respondus 2) Select the Start Tab if necessary 3) Click the Import Questions button to import questions from a text file. 4) Select Text File in Standard Format. 5) In the File Name field, Browse to select your Text File (If your file is in RTF Rich Text Format, Select Rich Text in Standard Format) 6) In step 2, Select Create a new document, named: 7) Type a name for the new document Quiz01 and select Exam as the type of file to create Respondus 4
5 8) Click Preview to preview the questions. 9) Click Finish to complete the process 10) Click OK to file saved message. The following screen will be displayed. Respondus 5
6 To Modify a Question: 1) Click on the Title of the Question in the question list 2) Click the Modify button in the Properties dialog box You are now able to edit the question and the possible answers as well as change the correct answer and the point value. When finished editing the question, click Save Changes To Preview a Question 1) Click on the question in the question list Respondus 6
7 2) Click Preview 3) Click OK when finished previewing. Previewing the File Once you feel you are ready to submit this data to Blackboard, it is encouraged that you preview the entire file first. To Preview the File 1) Select the Preview and Publish Tab 2) Click Preview the File 3) Click Close to close the Preview window Respondus 7
8 Publish to Blackboard Select the Preview and Publish tab. Preview and Publish Settings 1. First you will want to preview your test. 2. Use the buttons in the top right hand corner of the preview box to move to the next or previous question, modify the question or close the preview box. 3. Next, select the Publish to Blackboard option, a tab on the left hand side of your screen. 4. Select the Publish Wizard button. 5. A Publish Wizard window will appear. Choose Publish to a single course if you are uploading the exam or survey to one course or if you want to upload the exam or survey to one course at a time. Choose Batch Publish to multiple courses if you would like to upload the exam or survey to more than one course at the same time. 6. In the Blackboard Server field, click on the drop down menu and select add new server. 7. When you select the add new server option, a new window will open. 8. Fill in the fields by following the directions very carefully. Respondus 8
9 Hint: To copy and paste the web address for number one and two you will need to open your browser and go to the web page that each number requests. In the address bar, click one time so that the address it highlighted. Next right click and choose copy. Come back to the Respondus program click in the text box, right click and choose paste. Repeat these steps for the requested web page on number two. Respondus 9
10 9. On number three press the button. 10. Be sure to enter a description for the server (ex. Bb Server), your user name and password at the bottom of the box in order to proceed. 11. Once you ve filled in all of the blanks, select OK. 12. The Blackboard Server and Course window will close and you will return to the Publish Wizard Window. 13. Select Next. 14. If you are publishing to a single course use the drop down menu to choose the course that you would like to publish to. Respondus 10
11 15. Make appropriate settings for Create and Replacing Duplicate Exams/Surveys. 16. Remove all default checks on number three Additional Options for Exam/Survey. 17. Click Next to begin publishing the exam/survey. 18. Select the area where the test will be deployed and then click Next. 19. The test will begin uploading to Blackboard. When the status window reads Start Blackboard 6.3+ Publish, you are done. 20. Click Finish, exit out of Respondus and return to your Blackboard course. Respondus 11
